VOX POPULI IN CYBERSPACE

We claim to live in a democratic society and yet ironically lament our limited opportunities to voice our discontent about issues that concern and affect us. The importance and effectiveness of the MSM is declining drastically and we can see that increasingly, if we intend to make any difference at all to effect change in our country, online oppositional power is now heavily dependent on a new type of activism-bloggers.

Current trends show that many write about a broad range of public issues to express their dissent. Whenever major events or crises occur such as in the Teoh Beng Hock inquest, readers can invariably turn to blogs and online news portals for the latest information and more importantly, critical commentaries which are virtually absent in MSM.

Fully aware of the expectations of their audience, activist-bloggers have to keep abreast with their critical comments and observations. Blogosphere culture requires bloggers to write for their audience with specific objectives in mind. Online activism hardly happens out of the blue, but has found a social basis, especially in Malaysia, because of the structural flaws in society. Furthermore, online activism has succeeded in sustaining its power because it fills the void that has been created by the failure of mass media to play its role in society.

After blogging for 17 months, I realize that in democratic societies, despite whatever rights we may pretend we have, many people do not have an opinion about major issues such as the "non-attitudes" problem - as addressed in my earlier posts on political ambivalence. Judging from the messages in both mainstream and online websites, the different styles of framing of questions can solicit and mould public opinion.

Such a situation certainly raises questions about the ability and competence of ordinary citizens to play the expected roles in a democratic society. Recently, if not for Tweeter and global cable networks, protests in Iran would not have become so widely known and influential. In the same vein, online protests about the “Green Dam” software in China gained momentum when even some official media stories questioned the policy. All this goes to show that we cannot underestimate the pervasive power of the Internet.

Conversely, we can also argue that the constant updates of news feeds from tweets, blogs and facebook have fuelled news reporting in online mass media. The fact is, web power has become an integral part of mainstream media power. From my observations, it appears that the “old” and “new” media are converging and, whether we like it or not, the variety of media channels has vital connections, each of which enhances and strengthens the links in the chain.

From my observation and experience, internet activists depend on two factors that exist in a symbiotic relationship - size and rhetoric. When we want to gain attention from the masses, we gather in large crowds for demonstrations. Well, we don't really have to do so as much as in the past now because through the internet, if one can generate large volumes of traffic, one would be able to wield and to show web power such as seen in Malaysia Today, Malaysiakini and the more popular socio-political blogs! For instance, during election campaigns, we see candidates trying their best to attract and to sway crowds in ceramahs (gatherings). Similarly, when a blogger like me rants passionately in cyberspace, we can engage readers and expand participation via comments or forums and in this simple but effective way, raise awareness and mobilize people power in the right direction. And that is exactly what I am trying to do in my blog.

Regular blog readers would know that I stopped blogging on SoPo issues on a regular basis from January 2009 (for reasons that I wish to leave in the past), with only sporadic posts on issues close to my heart. Since then, I have been blogging on a variety of issues such as on music, literature, movies, self-help stuff and of course on humor. At one point, I was so frustrated that I did not visit many news portals and chose to live in ignorance but I woke up to the reality that if every one did the same thing, who will step forward to help steer the country in the right direction? For that reason, I started blogging on certain issues not for self-glorification or the sheer love for writing but more so because I know that cyberspace has the potential and the power to mobilize vox populi and to change and mould public opinion. So here I am,writing on SoPo issues again. I seek your patience with me as I venture on this journey to help, in my small way, make a difference in the country that I love so much. I will still be blogging on the usual areas for what is life without inspiration, motivation and humor? :-)

Some of you might feel that this post is a tad academic. Well, in a way it is because I am hitting the books again soon and have been reading a lot for my research proposal and allowing my brain to go into overdrive but that is because I want to attain my dream before I die :-). Whatever the case, for the moment, this is my calling - to be part of cyberspace and to spread the message about the power of the web, people power, and how more than ever in this Internet age, web power is indeed people power - exactly what we need for the much needed change in this country. I seek your comments and hope to engage you in lively discussions via the comments section and hope that you, dear reader, will accept my humble offerings and share with me your input as I open a window into my thoughts with you via this space.

Thanks! Have a lovely evening!

nick "I think therefore I am"... Rene Descartes pretty much sums up what it means to be human, I think. But sadly not many Malaysian use their god given gift " the large thing between their ears" to much use lately. Or perhaps they tended to discard what they think and meekly accepted the version told by the ruling elite out of sheer complacency or uncaring or maybe even stupidity. It puzzles me to no end why large segment of our society still can't see that there is something very very wrong with our government and country. They have brain don't they? Can't they think and deduce it from what they hear, see and experience? ( specifically to those UMNO and BN loyal supporter in mind).

Vox populi... Right now I'm truly afraid... afraid that a large segment of our society are indeed voicing out but they are voicing out without thought... without thinking, without being human ( according to my interpretation of Rene Descartes famous word). They are voicing out through apathy and "why bother?" and "it doesn't concern me" and "tak kisahlah"... Yes, there maybe a substantial vox populi in cyberspace but what if there is a louder vox populi out there? Not loud in voices but rather in silence, meekly accepting things as they are, uncaring, apathy and being detached from the society, an island of oneself, the very thing the evil doer wants from their citizen? Sis, it will be a nightmare, a deadly one if this is true and it will mean our society is in a far worse condition than we realize. Sorry for being so gloomy but the case of Teoh, Tian Chua, the Auditor-General's report of year after year corruption ( as usual no action just talk only) and the sheer arrogance of UMNO and the ruling elite is truly depressing. The only consolation is that tomorrow is a new day and maybe, maybe there some good news waiting to sprang out and bring some cheer into our life. Hope spring eternal and may GOD BLESS US ALL. ( apologies if I seem to be somewhat erratic... my mind is all over the place today... being depressed and hopeful and depress again and finally finding hope in THE MOST MERCIFUL GOD).

    Hamba.

    edward Dear paula,

Good evening to you too. I have been writing to you so often lately my wife must be wondering who you are haha.

Jokes aside, I am really happy to know of your intended purpose. You have been an educator all your life, teaching, molding young minds and now you have turn your sight on the country, way to go, wow! Ps Rick Warren will be extremely pleased to know this! You are gifted to do this and I wish you all the best.

I will endeavor to help in any way I can. I wish I can write as eloquently and as clearly as you.. alas I know how God gifted each of his children differently.

When I look at my kids often I wonder how the future holds for them. What kind of futuristic society they will find themselves in just like how I reflect on my childhood days in the 60's?. What kind of people will be in charge?. Will they be safe?

I return to Malaysia in the 80's forsaking an offer of PR from another country. 10 years later I deeply regretted that decision. Another 10 years on I only wanted to migrate. Then calamity came and I fell seriously sick and there goes my dream of experiencing real snow on Christmas. Our country is so different now and I am not referring to our KLCC. Well I will save that discourse for another rainy day and Monday.

But I have a gimmer of hope now since last year's political tsunami. When I see young leaders like Nurul Izzah, Nik Nazmi, Gobind Singh, Hannah Yeoh (and many others) I feel very encouraged. Its like the sunshine is coming through our rain covered windows. How refreshing!

Live your dreams Paula. Live them well. Do good whenever you can and wherever you are for we only pass through this way once(if I sound like a preacher please wake me up haha). keep well.

    Warm regards,
    Edward

    Unknown Dear Nick,

I studied French for some time and read Descartes' writings in French.
Je pense, donc je suis (I think, therefore I am; or I am thinking, therefore I exist), found in part IV of Discourse on the Method. I love his works and that of many other philosophers such as Hobbes, Leibniz, Ibn Khaldun, Durkheim and so on. Perhaps that is why I am such an idealist - ever hoping that one day, I will wake up to a better society but alas, it seems more like a worsening nightmare at the moment.

I believe the social disintegration we see in Malaysia is due to the lapse or breakdown of traditional social support systems. After independence, each group tried to find its place in society while greedy plunderers sought to keep us apart via special policies. Along the way, while robbing us of resources from right under our noses, they paralyzed our abilities to think by a staple diet of lies, myths and half-truths until most believed these to be the gospel truth!!! Over the years, such fallacies became ingrained in our souls, spirits until it became part of the lens through which we look at society. We did not see the likeness in each other and accentuated the differences. With no solidarity, primordial ties and hardly any economic interdependence, suspicions, enmity and hatred were bred in a bed of handouts given to quell the rising protests. The greedy ones were easily satisfied while the intellectuals theorized and the practical idealist shook their heads - all of us went in different directions on differing plains of existence. So tragic! With no unity, high levels of animosity, it all came together and festered as breeding ground for communal animosity. Without the ability to live together harmoniously coupled with the need to survive, the weaker ones fought for themselves growing stronger while the stronger ones fought and grew weaker - i.e. the disparity worsened. Up and about came fiends from the underworld and we have walking demons and evil lackeys doing their bidding, fulfilling their diabolical scheme to fill their private treasure chests.

What about the rest of us? With hope dwindling, sanity being drained slowly but surely, it is only natural that the voice became softer and weaker till they themselves felt that the voice mattered no more.

Sorry - it is not only you who is feeling depressed - I am too. What can I do? Dream, philosophize, rationalize and hopefully mobilize people to realize what a terrible state of affairs we see...

    Sighs

Indeed, I doubt our nation has ever been as low as where we are now where so many have given up their capacity to feel, to be able to know what is guilt and conscience and to be accountable one to another.

What they think they are - they will be....and if we resign ourselves to negativism, hope will be vanquished so we cannot afford that! We will hold our heads high and pray that He will deliver us from this cauldron brewing lies, hatred, plots and diabolical schemes over a fire fanned by deceit and greed. We will overcome!!! God help us!

    Unknown Dear Edward,

Good evening to you! I appreciate your candid and thoughtful comments that you have been sharing with us here. It is always gratifying to be able to connect with someone this way and to empathize and sympathize with each other.

Ah - I see you are a Rick Warren fan. I wonder if I know you via some denominational meetings because in the 1980's was very active in national conferences. Rick Warren is right - we must have a purpose-driven life without which we would be merely existing and not living life to the fullest - which is the current predicament that we face in our country - so much there for us but so little in reality that really belongs to us.

I AM still very worried about my children and have blogged about this in the post called "My Son, please look for greener pastures".

When I was a little girl, I used to be so so so so patriotic. I went through May 13 unscathed but witnessed something that made me grow up prematurely and taught me the meaning of nationalism and racial tolerance. Somehow, being a Malaysian was a state of mind that thrilled me knowing that I belong to a country that had so much for everyone to live for.

But things are not the same as what used to be in the 1960's or 1970's.

I really worry for my children, their future, their children and my grandchildren's education. I am at the crossroads of my life where I can choose to be a pessimist or will myself to be an optimist.

I am very different from what I used to be - because of all the hiccups in my life, I can face challenges squarely in the eye and to stand my own ground and go into battle. Perhaps learning martial arts made a difference :-).

Whatever the case, my journey to where I am in terms of self-discovery and social consciousness has NOT been an easy one BUT has been very worthwhile. I know who I am, strengths and weaknesses alike and I know that despite being one insignificant person, if I will myself, I can leave behind a legacy for people to remember me by and to inspire my descendants to live beyond what I achieved. For many months, I did not write on SoPo topics except on a few occasions. Somewhere along the way, a breakthrough came and suddenly, I could write again.

My nom de plume unplugged became a maxim and here I am, unplugging my thoughts as my brain works in overdrive. I do not think I write eloquently ...I wish I did. If truth be told, I always feel both awed and inspired by writers such as Antares, Art Harun, Vijay, you, Nick and other commenters who leave behind such awesome comments ...but I try to write from my heart and to unleash the writer within that I may touch the lives of others the way I have been touched by other people.

Whatever it is, I have walked the same road like you have re migration and have burned bridges. Much as I yearn to settle down elsewhere, I will not because Malaysia is my country, my home. It may not be perfect but this is where my heart lies and that is what makes all the difference.

I guess we all had to fight our own battles in order to become better warriors to fight bigger battles, right :-)? For if we had not tasted bitterness, we would not be savoring joy...and as we live the lives destined and ordained by God, each of us will have to find our place and purpose in this world, in this land...and it is truly up to us to make this world a better place.

Yes, I will live out my dreams and max out my time on earth...

What an appropriate close to your comment - the line from desiderata.....We are but transients on this earth, in this land and truly it is up to us to wallow in self-pity or to move forward and to move this country forward with vision, mission as we fill our spirits with inspiration.

God bless you, Edward. You are a good man and truly blessed!!! And I am blessed to know you.

    Thanks for your comment!
    Shalom,
    Paula

romerz Paula, you are being overly apologetic and nice to your readers.

I just would like to remind you that we continue to read your blog not because you are nice to us but because you make sense especially on the SoPo issues.

Of course there were times when I couldn't relate to your NON-SoPo postings but deep down inside, I knew that there were other "pressures" which prevented you from exercising your true intellect and feelings.

Sorry to say this but if you apologize one more time, then I will construe that as insulting my intelligence!

Keep it coming and allow us the freedom to decide for ourselves what you say is relevant or not.

The fact that we continue to return here from time-to-time should tell you something, doesn't it?

    Unknown Dear Romerz,

Thanks for the push forward and guess nothing's gonna stop us now :-)!

Truly, it is great to be back again and I have never been happier blogging about what i love most.
