WHAT'S ON YOUR AGENDA?

Posted by Unknown On Tuesday, April 27, 2010 31 comments
It has been such a busy day today with my older boy. Parenting is a beautiful experience and to those of you who have children, cherish the moments with your kids. They grow up TOO QUICKLY. When they were young, I wished they would mature asap but now, I long for the good old days. Anyway, I only managed to catch up on the news this afternoon and chanced upon three articles in Malaysiakini HERE where Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Mukhriz Mahathir conceded that Pakatan Rakyat had been successful in exploiting emotive issues to turn voters against Barisan Nasional in the Hulu Selangor parliamentary by-election.

Another article HERE said:

If the mainstream media coverage of the Hulu Selangor by-election can be summarised, it would come across as 'BN good, Pakatan Rakyat bad'.

Two media monitors say little has changed in this respect, as they reviewed media reports of the campaign that pitted BN's P Kamalanathan against PKR's Zaid Ibrahim in the polls last Sunday.

Mustafa K Annuar, secretary of Penang-based social reform group Aliran, said the mainstream media was largely supportive of BN and Kamalanathan, while running down Pakatan and Zaid.
These two articles have prompted me to write this evening's post on agenda-setting. Agenda setting is a process whereby news media, through the various editorial selection process, can transmit to the public the importance of political topics, which affects the relative importance of how these are perceived by the public. Of course, the news media may not tell the public what to think or which side to take on a political issue or what candidate to support in an election, but they set the agenda for the public to think about what issues are important or what candidates are viable.

Ideally, professional norms i.e. news values, such as proximity, timeliness, conflict, celebrity and human interest, determines what is newsworthy. The MSM then prioritizes the news, such as giving a banner headline or lead news in tv. This ordering of political objects by the news media is the “media agenda.” With this, it helps readers decide where to place their attention.

Put simply, the MSM tell the public what is important. Agenda-setting theory conceptualizes this ordering of political objects by the public as the “public agenda.” Obviously, any news coverage is limited by time and space, important topics overshadow other issues. The problem is this. If there is NO FREE PRESS, it could mean that the MSM may be controlled by unseen hands. Perhaps you might have read about ntv7's 'Editor's Time' programme producer Joshua Wong's resignation last Thursday.

We can see clearly that the MSM agenda is essentially ubiquitous in a two-level flow from opinion leaders to opinion followers. In this way, the news media agenda permeates society. In the past, it used to be a powerful medium because more people were exposed to the MSM but not any more because we have the new media in cyberspace. Nevertheless, research has shown that agenda setting is stronger for newspapers than for television news.

Sometimes, the rakyat may need some orientation as to what should be the agenda and this depends on the relevance of the political sub ject and its uncertainty - a good example is the recent HN by-election. With low relevance, the need for orientation is low. If both relevancy and uncertainty are high, then need for orientation is high. When need for orientation is high among many in the population, agenda setting is more likely to be strong. Therefore, during a social crisis, it is natural that people turn to the media for guidance.

The bottom line is this. When reading any article, ask yourself what is the objective or agenda of the article. The truth is, the frame of reference (sum of prejudices, feelings, experience etc) of a person can influence his perception of the article as well as one tends to believe what supports his existing or pre-existing beliefs.

For instance, there is ONE commenter who always claims that I am racist against Indians. I am not. He/She did not say anything positive when I wished Kamalanathan well but finds fault with my posts. I am thankful that NONE of my readers have expressed anti-Indian sentiments. I believe unity is more important than going on a fault-finding mission. If he/she does not like my articles, why come and read? I am deeply flattered that there is something here that appeals to him/her. If he or she or they feel so strongly, I suggest he/she/they join a political party, stand for elections and make a difference in the way this country is run by offering your expertise, time and manpower instead of hiding behind an anonymous persona. If you cannot even have the courage to reveal your identity, go bark in another blog. Don't waste your time commenting in my blog because I will not entertain your unfair comments or publish them. I cannot publish your comment as i deem it offensive and inappropriate. Please take your hatred somewhere else.

You keep throwing the race card at me to bait me into a dispute or whatever is on your agenda. Sorry. I am not interested in such frivolous pursuits. My conscience is very clear. If writing the truth is being racist then I am guilty. But get this straight - I have never been racist nor do I condone racism. I have written about my best friends who are Indians and how I celebrated Deepavali with them, how I grew up with them and how I even know how to speak Tamil!!! I will not publish comments that attempt to smear my good image nor provide racists in disguise of being upright persons to use this blog aas their platform to warp the truth.

So whoever you are, I pray that God will bless you and make you see that I pray for a better Malaysia and it has to begin with you and me. We have to see each other beyond color. We are Malaysians, sharing and co-existing in this country and we have to work together for the greater good of this nation. I have no time to respond to negative comments and do not want to partake in any verbal war because that is not me and not my style.

I wish you well and farewell. This is the one and only time I will respond to the many comments which you have left here. Thanks to all my readers who have been wonderful commenters and I have never ever NOT published any comments from anyone except for this person.

Thanks so much dear reader for reading. Do leave a comment to share your thoughts and views and I am sure you all will, as always, leave beautiful comments. I have an agenda in this blog - to spread goodwill, harmony, hope and to inspire others to work towards a better Malaysia. I hope we can share the same agenda. Have a lovely evening.

You did right. Don't EVER, allow such evil spirits into your blog. They are not humans, just some displaced evil spirits looking for a place to squat. They are not really interested in freedom of expression. All they want is the freedom to slander and spew hate.

To this unseen evil spirit I wish to it - F**k off!!! and don't come back!!!

Anonymous And call me a wide-eyed idealist, but I have never forgotten that politics is more than just votes; it is also about ideals, principles and doing what’s right. I believe the PM will stick to his 1Malaysia trajectory and keep reforming until voters — of whatever ethnicity — become convinced that the changes are for real and here to stay. Importantly, I am confident that he can convince them.

Anonymous One thing common among Malaysian politicians is they will say one thing but mean the opposite:

If they say, "We will only punish the bad people". Then you better be scared because...in reality, they will punish only the good people like you and (ahem) me.

If they say, "We have nothing to hide. We promise you that we'll get to the bottom and reveal the truth"...but in reality they'll quietly threaten to sack the people involved with whatever if they told the truth.

If they say, "We are against corruption too. Tell us who these people are and we'll take action without fear or favor"...but in reality they'll quietly tell those involved in corruption to quickly cover up their asses.

If they say, "We cannot have open tenders because of national security"...but in reality they want to give the contract to their croynies or to themselves.

If they say, "I build my palace using my own hard-earned money and that's the truth"...but in reality the palace is built for free by contractors who has to keep his mouth shut or no more contracts.

If they say, "People should stop saying offensive things, especially racist remarks that will hurt the feelings of others"...but in reality they will quietly encourage racist NGOs to shout seditious slogans and make make violent threats.

If they say, "We are one family and we'll swim or sink together"...in reality you can go to hell and they won't give a damn.

If they say, "We want to stop the brain drain as it is a worrying trend that is threatening our competitiveness and our economy"...in reality they want the smart ones to leave yesterday, the sooner the better and don't come back.

If they say, "We are a tolerant, nice and humble people, sensitive to others' religious beliefs"...in reality they will quietly encourage some crazy animals to burn down your place of worship.

If they say, "Malaysia is for everybody, no one will be left behind"...in reality they want you to balik tongsan or balik India if you don't like it here.

For me, I'm different. If I say, "Why don't you kiss my arse", I'd really mean it. Not like some double-talking, stillborn, pea-brain conman camouflaging as a "people's representative".

    But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

What a high calling ? We are of one human race unless some prefer to be the "special breeds" walking around with halo on their heads and served by belly dancers, huh ?
I'm a Malaysian and will stay true to it. My purpose in my country is clear,....that is to play my part in giving back to society as much I have been entrusted with both in kinds and deeds. God bless Malaysia.

Anonymous We have to admit that in terms of so-called leaderships, this country is thoroughly screwed where the matter of ethics and good principles is concerned.

In their place lay on hypocrisy, vanity, corruption, elitist arrogance and and an uncultured state.

The Buddha taught that the uncultured man blame others, the cultured man, himself, but the enlightened one, neither.

Judging from the constant tsunami of blames, and hate speeches, mainly from one group, for 53 years, we can only say that this demonstrates the exact opposite of good culture. Nothing to be proud of notwithstanding those meaningless nonsense that has been propagated as proof of success by way of hollow vanity.

To address a problem, we have to first recognize it, Malusia assuredly and officially cannot under the present racist/fascist autocratic system.

Therefore all talk of "Change", is just vulgar kok tok, in terms of true morality.

That is truly a very honest response to the alarming state of affairs.

Many do not want to recognize the true state of affairs and the disease that has spread worse than cancer throughout the land. And why so? Because it is too painful and too terrifying!

Indeed much of it is meaningless nonsense and hollow vanity. Until and unless morality is restored, the rest of us will be rocking in this sea of disaster.

Anonymous StraightTalking, Malaysian politicians are a perverse and immoral lot. Of course, their "yes" becomes "nos" and vice versa.

Also, e.g., one moment, Officialdom may say, "No increase in fuel price", and then suddenly, there comes a stealthy overnight increase in that! This has been observed since the early eighties.

They lost it - long ago! It's their supporters weaknesses and short comings that kept them in power. these ppl have themselves to blame.

Anonymous Dear MWS, the stupid part is that Officialdom emphasizes always and mainly on the external show of "morality" via dressing only and makes a mockery of real morality itself.

Here itself, the showy emptiness that underscores a society is openly and glaringly displayed for vanity's sake! So cheapie shallow - and hollow!.
