Thanks for the link to the article. The comment that you wrote is actually more meaningful!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I had a similar experience in Madrid when I was travelling in Europe in the early 1990's. Then, I was dressed in a hooded top, cut-off jeans, walking boots and was also wearing a cap. I could pass off as a guy anytime. When I went to the public toilet, the lady refused to let me go to the ladies and directed me to the gents!!!. Quite outraged, I straightened my top and then she realized my actual gender and I could go to the ladies! Haha!
So it is not only words but also looks that can be deceiving :-).
Take care and have a blessed day!

Anonymous OK. my turn to share a funny tale...:-)
I was with three angmo fine dining in a posh chinese restaurant at a 5-star hotel in Shanghai. While we were dining, one of my angmo buddies politely asked the female attendant, who had been patiently waiting at our table, that he needed to go to the washroom.
The girl, all dolled up in an expensive looking cheongsum, coyly said, "Thank you, I'll take it for you"!! My friend was like, "Excuse me?" And she repeated it!!
For several seconds that seemed a lifetime, we sat there speechless, and then everyone burst into hysterical laughter!!! Man! We almost had a heart attack!!
The girl was blushing like a red chilli after I eventually told her what he intention was!

Yes, words are real funny if you fully understand it or else it mayjust be mere words. I'd a funny encounter long ago,.... in 1988. As I arrived in the morning at Bern (Switzerland)railway station after a long flight through Zurich from Malaysia, need to ease myself. With luggages in tow I enter the wrong toilet and was stopped in track by a lady that directed me next door. What an embarrassment even for a country bumpkin !!!
The signs were written clearly as such : DAMEN & HERREN. If I recollect clearly and of course in simple English it also simply means that Herren relates to women whereas Damen relates to The Men. No, no not that way to interpret it as those words are in German. Thus, it simple means Ladies (Damen) & Gentlemen (Herren).
Yes, words when read wrongly can land us into many kinds of trouble. Won't know what will happen if it is a lady entering into the men's toilet that day and seeing men holding their "wares" peeing against he wall,ha ha ha.
