Love and Marriage

I'll be hitting 50 at the end of this year and by then, I would have been with my husband for 33.5 years (27 years as spouses) - a long time indeed. Throughout these years, I always remember what one pastor told us - Hollywood marriages don't last because when love runs out, many turn to divorce. He emphasized then that marriage sustains love because it is a commitment to love even when we don't feel like there is love any more.

Since that time, I have always imparted this philosophy to many of my friends and former students, even reminding myself of this maxim during bad times. Of course it is not easy to be a spouse or a parent or a friend for that matter but what matters is that we try to be the very best in all that we do and say - to be sincere, tolerant and forgiving. Here's something that a friend sent to me recently. It may make many of us smile but if we care to think carefully, some of these scenarios are quite close to home...at least some of them, for me :-).

May you and yours have a blessed life together and may your children carry on the legacy of love that you have given to them. If you are single, may you be contented, happy and may the right one come along in due time.

Have a nice day, everyone! Thank God it's Friday! Cheers!

Love is holding hands in the street.
Marriage is holding arguments in the street.

Love is cuddling on a sofa.
Marriage is one of them sleeping on a sofa.

Love is talking about having children.
Marriage is talking about getting away from children.

Love is going to bed early.
Marriage is going to sleep early

Love is losing your appetite.
Marriage is losing your figure.

Love is sweet nothing in the ear.
Marriage is sweet nothing in the bank.

Tv has no place in love.
Marriage is a fight for remote control.

Love is 1 drink and 2 straws.
Marriage is "Don't you think you've had enough!".

Conclusion:
"Love is blind,
Marriage is an eye opener!"

LC Teh Tell you the truth ours wasn't exactly Hollywood marriage either.... but it's worked ok for the last 28 years... not perfect, but no complaints. The happy times are more than the odd days.

Many thanks for your candid comment and the link to your very beautifully written post.

Guess we are from the same era, baby boomers with just about the same type of experiences.

May you and your wife have many more years of wedded bliss together!

Blessings and peace to you and your family

KS Cheah "Hollywood marriages don't last because when love runs out, many turn to divorce...marriage sustains love because it is a commitment to love even when we don't feel like there is love any more."

MWS, much as I would like to, I cannot bring myself to agree with your pastor. He appears to imply that Hollywood marriages do not sustain love because they lack commitment to love.

For me, "...when we don't feel like there is love any more", a marriage loses its meaning and becomes a sham or a convenience. In other words, love sustains a marriage. Not the other way around.

Anyway, Jeannie and I agreed that our love for each other may change as our marriage progressed but we felt secure that the "degree" of love would remain or even increase. For that, we had to remain "in love" with each other.

Though we had our ups and downs as a couple, divorce was never something that we each could imagine because we were always in love.

Just my two sen lah ;o)

    Regards,
    Ch

Thank you for sharing from your heart. I have known for a long time since the first time I read your blog that you and Jeannie truly loved each other.

Love grows as we grow older with our spouses and true love never dies, like what I blogged a few days.

I believe the pastor was not demeaning Hollywood marriages but rather, highlighting the disturbing trend that when some feel that love has run out, it is time to call off the arrangement. Indeed, it works both ways - love sustains a marriage and marriage sustains love. There cannot be one without the other but then again, that is idealistic me speaking.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience to inspire us to be more than what we are and to really love wholeheartedly.

You remind me of the couple in Mitch Albom's "Five People You Meet in Heaven".

Take care and thanks so much for sharing.

God bless you always. Do keep in touch!

    Warmest regards

    KS Cheah Dear MWS,

Thanks for your reference to Mitch Albom's "Five People You Meet in Heaven". I had not heard of it but thanks to the wonders of Google, I managed to get a rather detailed synopsis from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Five_People_You_Meet_in_Heaven)

Interestingly, my personal, and please forgive my areligious beliefs about the afterlife is congruous with the description and concept of the afterlife in the storyline.

Mine are mainly derived from the works of Dr Michael Newton (http://nocturnal-mind.blogspot.com/search?q=Michael+Newton) and the ongoing spiritual experiences of our daughter Krystyn. Some of these can be found in Jeannie's memorial website at www.cheahs.com under "Jeannie Links".

MWS, it is I who must thank you for sharing. Your writings are a reflection of a true woman of substance which I think is most aptly define here, http://www.ehow.com/way_5397665_mean-woman-substance.html

    Warmest regards.

I am glad Mitch Albom's book resonated with you. I have all his books with the exception of his latest release. His "Tuesdays With Morrie" was compulsory reading for all my classes during my days as a lecturer.

When I first read "Five People You Meet in Heaven", I truly wept for it struck many chords in my heart.

Thank you for sharing those urls. Very beautiful indeed and I am sure you miss Jeannie painfully.

Your girl and I share the same gift. Serious.

I have the gift and so do my cousins and aunts. :-)

But sadly, for many decades, mine was always wrt bad news :-( but I have learnt to tap on it and not to turn it off like I did when I knew about my dad's imminent death.

It is not easy to live with it but I am glad your girl has done so very well.

Take care and thank you so much for sharing and blessing my readers and me.

May you continue to write and to inspire us with your wisdom, words and experience.

    Blessings to you and yours
