If truth be told, I am lost in a world of my own, far far away from the maddening news. Pardon my ignornance but if not for Shadower who sent me the following article, I would not be aware of our state of *coughs* progress. Thanks, Shadower, for sharing this enlightening news. :-)
According to our wonderful national news agency, Bernama:
KANGAR: Malaysia has managed to build an impressive modern civilisation at a time when many countries are on the verge of recession, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin.
According to Muhyiddin, many countries, especially Islamic ones wished to make Malaysia a role model due to its achievements in various fields.
Speaking at a breaking of fast function with the leaders and people of Perlis at Dewan 2020 here yesterday, he said Malaysia’s achievements were not just a matter of fate but due to the capability and intelligence of its leadership.
He said Malaysia has targetted to be the first developed Islamic country by 2020 and it will do so in the next eight years.
With the country’s economic strength, Malaysians should not be faced with unemployment, as there were always opportunities, he said.
Unemployment only occurred when locals were choosy, which leaves such opportunities to foreign workers, he added.
“The country is expected to need 3.3 million human capital in the next eight years in various fields,” he said.
He remarked that the government had always focused on the education sector and turned it into the people’s right.
“Education is for everyone. For 55 years (since Independence), we have developed Malaysian society to become what it is today and one of the sector’s success is the reduction of poverty,” he said.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the government was also in the midst of reviewing the education system so it could produce more human capital of quality.
During the function, Muhyiddin and his wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman presented Ramadan aid to 1,900 single mothers and orphans.
The deputy prime minister also launched a book, titled ‘Al-Hussain Mosque’ authored by a group of writers led by Tan Sri Mohd Ariffin Yusuf, the generous donor who sponsored the construction of the mosque.
The mosque, which has become the new landmark of Kuala Perlis, is being managed by Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).
Also present at the event was Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu. — Bernama
