There will always be differences in doctrinal teachings which cannot be crossed. All must respect the different religions and places/symbols of worship wherever and whenever. The fundamental principle of mutual respect for that which each religion holds sacred is certainly inviolable. No person or group can be permitted to trivialize, destroy or besmirch any sacred thing or place.
All acts of desecration (see footnote at the end of the post) that have happened of late such as reported HERE must be condemned. We must affirm that the dignity and sacredness of places of worship must be defended and preserved.
The police have shown us that they view the matter seriously and have taken the strongest measures possible to investigate these occurrences. Those responsible for violating the sacredness of places of worship must be held accountable. All quarters concerned must redouble all efforts to prevent and eliminate the use of religion or religious places to incite conflict.
Our authorities and Government officials must ensure that no one uses any aspect of any religion to transform a religious conflict in to a political conflict. No one in their right mind would use religion for any hidden political agenda or objective.
We must realize that any act to desecrate any place of worship is an act desecration that represents an assault on all who believe in the Almighty God and not just for one particular community.
I sincerely pray that Malaysians will continue to take the way of love, keep a calm and level-headed approach and strive towards religious co-existence and unity based on mutual respect and tolerance in our country. Co-existence is the way, NOT desecration.
May the Almighty continue to guide and protect all of us and keep us and Malaysia safe. May peace, love, harmony, unity and patience grow as we enjoy our time on earth and remember that what we have is a gift from heaven above.
Do leave a comment if you wish. Please read the other comments that other readers have shared re this blog post, especially Nick's comment which touches on co-existence. Thanks! Have a pleasant evening everyone. God bless you and yours.

Anonymous Have you seen red ants co-exists with black ants, living side by side?
How about hornets co-exists with bees, living next door to each others?
Have you, Denim Girl?
Nope. Of course not.
Can you tell me why is that?
And looking at human history ... of the 7000 or so years of recorded human history, how often people of different races living side by side, next to each others?

Unknown Dear Denim Guy
For nine years, I worked in an international school which was then populated by students and staff from over 59 nationalities.
None of us EVER had any problems with one another per racial issues.
Even the boarders forged good friendships and most of us are still in touch with each other and visit whenever we are in the others' neck of the woods.
Be positive! It IS possible and it is whether or not we want it. Do they want it? Do you want it?
I am speaking from personal experiences. I have good friends who are Indian (have blogged about it), Malay, British, Australian, even American or from African nations and truly have never ever encountered any conflict be it in Malaysia or in the nations I have visited all over the world,
God bless you and yours always..

Unknown Dear QQ,
How true! I used to have nine hamsters and a white mouse and they lived in harmony safe for one amorous male! :-) For the sanity of the females, he was put in solitary confinement. Out of compassion one day, I put him back with his beloved who bore him two litters of hammy puppies and he was so happy that he chased her up and down the stairs and the mini roller coaster he had in the cage and promptly died from a heart attack!
:-) The rest of the hamsters lived happily ever after with no amorous beau to destroy the harmony and unity.
That is the beauty of life - we can live together peacefully if we try...
Cheers

Unknown Dear Anon @ 9.09 pm and Boleh Man
Thanks for swinging by to share your thoughts.
Not that many Malaysians know that Dr. Rais Yatim has a very good record of service...
Consider this.
He is a lawyer by profession. In 1964, he graduated from Language Institute, Kuala Lumpur. In 1968, he taught Bahasa Malaysia to the American Peace Corps in the United States. He obtained his honors degree from National University of Singapore. In 1994, he obtained a PhD from King's College London. His doctoral dissertation was eventually published in 1995 as Freedom Under Executive Power in Malaysia: A Study of Executive Supremacy.
Are you all surprised? King's College is one of the Top 25 universities in the world!
According to Wikipedia:
Rais has held various positions in the national cabinet and other state government positions. He had been appointed a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan (1978 - 1982), Minister of Land and Regional Development (1982-1984), Minister of Information (1984-1986) and Foreign Minister (1986-1987). When he was out of favour within the UMNO leadership, he resumed his law career. Rais worked with a firm called Raim, Rais & Partner (1987-1999) before being reappointed as cabinet minister in 1999. Rais rejoin as Foreign Minister on March 18, 2008 until April 9, 2009.
One wonders, really wonders...

nick Sis,
Co-existence to me is the complete acceptance of our diversity of race, religion and culture, of a single society, in a single nation. Co-existence too means that the nature of acceptance is tempered with wisdom and its companion-patience. And both wisdom and patience must arrive simultaneously in society's heart. (Society cannot achieve wisdom without having first learnt the value and meaning of patience and conversely, patience without wisdom is only fit for livestock).
Our society actually misplaced or lost it's memory of co-existence when our forefather instead of pursuing independence as one people and one nation, opted for race base grouping (in order to get maximum benefit for their own respective race) in securing independence. The same can be said about religion. To make matter worse, UMNO and BN capitalized on this divisive crutches to ensure their lasting hold on power and wealth. Thus our people lost their natural and historical affinity for co-existence and were intentionally prevented from remembering that beautiful and powerful nature of ours. It's a lapse of judgment, an oversight by our forefather. It was unintentional but sadly it has tragic and lasting consequences.
What we need now is for us to relearn and remember the essence of that beautiful nature of ours. It's a tough order to recall lost memories but nothing is impossible as long as we as a society has the wisdom and the patience to know the ugly consequences of intolerance and bigotry. Our grass root leaders (the imams, the priests, the swami and the monks) must play the crucial role of physical representation of society's conscience. They must be the voice that calms and reassure our people and if they can do this and be seen doing this in unity (just imagine that in every town and village, every imam, priest, swami and monk are seen working together) it will usher a new beginning for our society.
Hopefully our PR leader can take heed of the existence of this untapped potential (of course the political goodwill it carries is enormous too) and start something in their respective area of representation. I believe once a momentum have been created, it will gain speed and spread to every corner of our society.
If UMNO and BN have their dirty trick, counter it with good intention, good cause and good implementation. Fight fire with water. Fighting fire with fire will only result in death and deep scar. It's about time our society remember it's lost memories of co-existence!
Hamba.
May GOD grant all of us wisdom and patience to light our journey of life. Have a pleasant evening Sis.

What a beautiful message you have written here. I will mention it in the blog post and encourage readers to read all the comments here, especially yours which touches o co-existence.
I should have mentioned it but wanted to keep it short and simple because some of my friends said my posts are too long and urged me to observe brevity :-).
Thanks so much for complimenting my post in such an eye-opening and meaningful manner. The grace of your words and your sincere voice shines through your eloquence.
May the Almighty continue to use you as a mouthpiece to change lives, transform minds and propel many forward!
Take care and may you and yours be blessed always!

Anonymous The following quotations from the blog, Rantings
exemplify the reaction of most Malaysians to these inane and ridiculous provocations of agents provocateurs:
"It seems obvious to me that there are some people very unhappy that Malaysians have not started killing each other yet. Instead we are going about our business and getting on with one another as usual. The malls and coffeeshops are full and there are traffic jams as always."
"We should therefore refuse to bend to their wishes. We should refuse to be played around like this. We want peace and we know that can only be achieved through dialogue and discussion with mutual respect all round."
"The wisdom of crowds" will prevail against the manipulations of the few.

Anonymous Why are you so surprised by the product of King's college?
We also have product of Oxford where he came to Penang and declared that he can't find any Malays except in Balik Pulau.
Yep. A pretty fine example of Oxford, I should say.
And for the bees and hornets thingy, you haven't answered the question:
Of the 7,000 years of human history, how often different races of human can live peacefully next door to each others?
Please note the 7,000 years.

Thanks for sharing that excerpt. I hope more and more Malaysians will continue to keep their level-headedness and will not be provoked in any way. Acts of provocation merely show up the mentality of the culprits and convince the rest of us that peace and tolerance are important.
Take care and God bless you.

I am not surprised. If you look at that comment again, I asked "Are you all surprised?"
Having been in the education industry for 1/4 of a century, I know the downslide trend of education and the mentality of many.
I did answer your question.
It is a matter of choice.
The frequency of occurrence of war or acts of aggression depends on location, time and the individual.
Any man has a choice to be aggressive or passive resistance.
Some choose to be negative whilst others positive.
For me, what is important is not to repeat history or to commit acts of violence or to have negative feelings about ANYTHING.
I will not succumb to baiting or indulge in arguments that are pointless, fruitless or meaningless.
I have only one life, and I intend to make it count.
War or aggression is NEVER the way. Man, throughout the 700 years you mentioned, has had to pay the price of their inclination for war and stupid decisions.
Research has also shown that those with hatred, negative feelings, unforgiveness, reentment, gripes, grudges etc are prone to diseases, in particular cancer.
So for me, even with my dying breath, it is and always will be the road of peace, tolerance, patience.
I accentuate the positive.
I look at the 7000years and am jubilant that MANKIND HAS NOT ELIMINATED ITSELF via wars, infighting and negative feelings.
I look at the history of man and learn from the mistakes and try not to repeat them in my own life. As a sociologist by training, I try to find reasons for the malaise and understand it in the context of the situation to unravel the thesis, antithesis and synthesis that makes society dynamic and know that no one incident can be replicated unless man chooses to do so.
Man holds destiny in his hands in many ways. The fact that God gave us this freedom means we have the responsibility to exercise our choice wisely.
You look at it differently and I respect your view.
Each of us is entitled to our own opinion and we have to respect each other's view.
Life is too short to sweat over minor things.
Take care and may God bless you.
Wishing you a day filled with love, joy, peace and happiness.
Warmest regards

Antares has a beautiful message for all of us in his post called:
NAVIGATIONAL TIPS FOR TURBULENT TIMES
Lots of beautiful graphics there too! Check it out. In a nutshell, he says:
* Be agile and sure-footed. It's really all about self-confidence. Overcome your fear of heights; you just might succeed beyond your wildest expectations!
* Be resourceful and expect some occasional rain. Don't let wet weather dampen your spirits. The sun will soon shine again.
* Smile, grin and laugh a lot. Doing so alters your biochemical balance and enhances your physical and mental health.
Have a great day and smiles to you!

Anonymous Maybe it's your so-ever-cheerful optimistic nature, Denim Girl.
Maybe that is what clouded the reality from your eyes.
You say you do not want to repeat history, but the fact is, history often repeats itself.
It's not a fluke, Denim Girl, that history repeats itself.
Wars were launched, people died, nations gone kaput.
Rebuild.
Then wars launched again. Rinse, repeat.
Why is that?
Have you ever wonder why that keep happening?
Why can't human, the most intelligent creature on this planet, keeps on doing the same old thing?
Well ... it's not human. It's the ANIMAL within us.
It's our nature of self-protection, hmm... lemme share with you a piece of wisdom from Middle-East:
" Me and my brother against my cousin; me, my brother, and my cousin against the other. "
That's basically what we are.
No matter how we like to think.
No matter who we think we are.
And no matter how much education we have ... we still can't fight our inner-animal that is so self-protective.
From the anthropology standpoint, it's a constant.
No matter you look at the ruins from ancient Maya civilization or ancient Egyptian or ancient Indian, Chinese, Roman, Mesopotamian civilizations --- a clear patten emerges.
No one can escape the fate --- that we humans just can't mix with each others without fighting.
It ain't me who is doing the talking, Denim Girl.
It's the millions and billions of lost lives through the millenia, that gave us that precious insight of ourselves.

Unknown Dear Denim Guy
:-) Of course I am aware of all that you mentioned.
I studied it continuously in university and taught it endlessly in my sociology classes.
I am well aware of the political, sociological, religious views of the malaise of the world.
I have just written a post
WHAT REALLY MATTERS AT THE END OF THE DAY?
and out up another one called
HOW SURE ARE YOU?.
We can choose to see that the cup is half empty or half full.
I am not sure about your age but for me, I am old already and could expire any time.
I want to die positively :-) and remember good things in life.
It is not suppression or denial but I choose to accentuate the positives, having being such a negative person for decades!!! I used to think like you and I asked and argued the very same questions in class, in church, with friends....
But at the end of the day, what really matters?
So I would rather spread the message of HOPE because of the doom and gloom around.
Surely Malaysians do not want to be sucked into the whirlpool of despair. Do you?
I appreciate your rationale and your willingness to share your views which I respect deeply.
God bless and have a great day. It is a lovely sunny day in Penang. Take care.

Unknown Dear Denim Guy
I would love to hear your views on:
a) Which school of thought do you come from as postulated in my response to you in pakatan post?
Are you a conflict theorist or functionalist theorist?
What is your favorite philosophy in life? Who is the personality who inspired you to be who you are - strong and steadfast in your view and persistent?
b) What is your perpective of suffering in life as seen in wars, diseases? Is man to be blamed or God?
c) also - you have not answered my question as to what are you doing in Malaysia feeling the way you do...are you preparing or on the way out?
I am staying put.
Too old to move anywhere...not even to the garden so I sit at home and think of positive things...
Would also love to hear your view about my philosophy of life.
Take care and have a great day!

Anonymous Aha !
I touched a raw nerve. :)
My stay in Penang is but temporary, there is a long story behind it but I'd skipped it.
It's God's fault or man's fault?
Neither.
It's the way it is.
Without war, man will outgrow the earth's ecosphere, and war is also a very good tool to expedite Darwin's process of natural selection.
As for philosophy --- since it came from the ancient Greek word meaning wisdom --- I am afraid I ain't that wise yet. I am still learning.
As for "conflict theorist or functionalist theorist", neither.
Those are theories that have yet proven themselves.
Human society won't be so easily break down into "conflict" or "functionalistic".
While the base stays constant, human societies have been through a lot of changes, with end results always stay unknown (unless the end result is a total massacre), for no one yet stood as the real final champion.
Humans are multi-faceted, and writing is but one of the many many facets of any human individual.
I only know you through your writing so it would be unfair to judge one base solely on one's writings.
Although you told us repeatedly that you were pessimistic, how would we know ...
1. ... if it is true?
2. ... if definition you use "pessimism" is really pessimism and not a temporary bout of self-doubt?
As for the matter of "staying put", it depends on how you look at the world.
Mine? The world is my oyster. "Staying put" to me means staying at the bottom of the gravity well and not necessarily have to be in Malaysia.
As for the matter of age, I am older than you in age but I ain't gonna stop myself from doing something just because of my age.
And yes, you are right. I may die any minute, but that doesn't mean I have to give up trying, does it?
Good day ! :)

IchiNippon Hi Denim Guy,
Again because our education system has sunk to a low level. I see that you are still talking about the birds and the bees.
Human beings are social animals (we are talking now beyond the birds and the bess), they are supposed to be able to live with each other unless there is fear, intimidation or prejudice.
