The following letter was written by Chee Soon Juan, 42, who was a neuropsychologist lecturer in NUS until 1993. He is the Sec-Gen of the Singapore Democratic party (SDP) and has been imprisoned many times for his political activities. This letter was first published in his blog HERE. Do visit his blog to see the comments from his fellow countrymen. Please leave a comment to share your thoughts and if you have time, please read my post on What Lies Beneath the Subtle Differences - on comparing LKY and TDM. Thanks!

Mr Lee Kuan Yew
Minister Mentor

Dear Mr Lee,

As you grieve over the loss of Mdm Kwa Geok Choo, many Singaporeans grieve with you. Every time someone dear to us passes away, the pain is deep. Losing a loved one is the cruelest act that life can inflict on humans.

Even as you mourn the loss of Mdm Kwa, I am certain that you think of the happier moments that the both of you shared and that you, of all the people in this world, were the one to have had the pleasure of spending a lifetime with her. That, at least, is to be celebrated.

But while you had Mdm Kwa on whom you cultivated your affection, there were others who were deprived of that very same joy. They were not separated from their loved ones by that surly grasp of death, but by political power with which you wielded, and wielded so ruthlessly and unjustly.

You had Mr Chia Thye Poh locked up for most of his adult life. He was incarcerated when he was only 25 and regained his freedom only when he turned 57. Even Nelson Mandela spent less years under detention. The best years of Mr Chia's life was so inhumanely taken away. He had a girlfriend who could not wait for him and who left him when he was still in prison.

Dr Lim Hock Siew married Dr Beatrice Chia. When I met them recently, I saw the love - unspoken but abiding - that they had for each other despite the fact that you had kept them apart for 20 years.

Then there is Mr Said Zahari whom you also imprisoned for years, 17 years to be exact. He spoke lovingly of his late wife, Salamah, whom he adored. She faithfully and lovingly tended home while waiting for her soul mate to return and to hold her and to talk with her. She struggled with their four children, running a food stall to eke out a living while Said languished in prison. Their children often had no money to go to school.

To this day, he asks for God's forgiveness for breaking the oath he made with Salamah to be together when they married each other. When she died in 2004, his heart must have broken into a thousand pieces, just like yours is breaking into a thousand pieces.

While you loved your wife, they loved theirs too.

There are scores of others who cannot be reunited with their families because you have made it so. Ms Tang Fong Har, who was detained in 1987 and who subsequently fled to Hong Kong, has been wanting to return to Singapore to see her ailing mother. But she cannot because there is still the threat of her being re-arrested if she returns.

Others like Mr Tang Liang Hong are also separated from their families because they cannot return to Singapore without facing incarceration.

I, too, have family. My wife wishes for me to return to Taiwan with her to be with her family. I cannot fulfill that obligation because you have made it so. I did go to Taiwan last year, but only to attend my father-in-law's funeral. He had asked about me before he died but by the time I got to his bedside after I managed to get the Official Assignee's approval to leave the country, he had lost consciousness. I never got to say goodbye.

It pains me to think that the only time I can be with my wife and children in Taiwan is when someone in the family dies.

You have taken away much of what I have but despite all that you have done to me and mine, I bear you no ill-will. As I said to you during our trial in 2008, you are an intelligent man, I only hope that you will become a wise one. I meant it then and I mean it now. Love and the relationships we have with family and friends are what matter most. Riches and power mean little when those dearest to us leave us.

I extend to you my deepest sympathies on the demise of Mdm Kwa. I want to express my condolence in the sincerest manner I know how. But while I commiserate with you on your loss, I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to tell you, if you don't already know, how much pain you have inflicted on your political opponents and whose families you have torn apart, the same kind of pain that you presently feel.

In the remaining time while you still walk this earth with us, turn from your ways. Free yourself from the prison of wealth and power that keeps you from cherishing that most precious of life's qualities - humanity. It is still not too late.

Sincerely,

Chee Soon Juan

Anonymous It is difficult to judge if a small state is allowed to have more freedon.
It is a fact. One of my school top student quit after form 5 in KL and went to Singapore. 2 years later, my ex school friend show me the Singapore Strait Times newspaper about a bomber was killed as his bomb predetonated as he was on his way to another destination. There was a picture and his name was mentioned. Apparently he was heavily influenced by the communist and unionist minded. In those days, Singapore was so Chinese minded and Unionised. But surprised to see LKY never think of China as his Tongshan. His roots is is place of birth

Anonymous It is disingenuous of "1 Anonymous" to subtly suggest that the threats to singapore were justification enough to do what he had done. Listen to the interview of zakaria and one will get a very good idea of how deceitful and machiavellian LKY was. It was never and had never been the security and well being of singapore and singaporeans. It is all about power and control.

Many other lives were also destroyed and hardly anyone know about it. The instrument of state were used to character assassinate anyone deemed a threat to the "security" of singapore. Fear and suspicion were spread, hatred and contempt stirred up. Oftentimes it is nothing but a huge ego trip for "THE MAN". Look up Martyn See to get an idea of how many private lives were destroyed in similar manner.

Thanks for your honest comment. For your information, Chee Soon Juan has always been a controversial figure in the Singapore landscape. To a certain extent, whilst it can be regarded of him being insensitive to LKY's moment of grief especially given the close relationship he had with his dear wife, we cannot deny that LKY has caused grief and hardship to those he incarcerated, particularly Dr. Lim Hock Siew. I blogged about that in my post called "Head and Shoulders Above Us All" which generated over 107 comments! That was a record post. Do check it out if you have time.

Thank you for having the heart to speak the truth. I appreciate your honest stand and hope that you will continue to speak from your heart. Take care and God bless you!

    Do keep in touch!

    Salam

Many thanks for your comment. I agree with you that LKY was certainly machiavellian in approach. He and TDM share many similarities and one wonders what is their motivation - I believe beyond power and control is the silent competition between the two of them to outdo each other. But what could have triggered this?

I am aware of LKY's 'track record' and blogged about Dr Lim Hock Siew in my post called "Head and Shoulders Above us all".

I have no idea what you were referring to wrt witso's comment and hope both of you can shed some light on this.

Thank you very much for speaking up for the downtrodden and as always, may justice prevail.

Take care and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and views. Have a blessed week and God bless!

    Do keep in touch!

    Best wishes

Anonymous If Peace, Stability, Security, Prosperity, Justice, Equality, were all humans, they were never meant to be friends. In the world that we live in, we have never had peace, stability, security, prosperity, justice, and equality all at the same time ever since the word “fu*k you” was invented. Somehow, somewhere, someone will tell us that in order to have peace, we’ll have to give up this; if we want to have stability we’ll have to give up that, and so on so forth.

It is a human tragedy to see so many great men both past and present who seemed noble in their thoughts and beliefs and yet, they have never been able to come together to create a world that is harmonious and prosperous; the two most important societal needs that humans ever wanted. Instead, their deliberate actions, all done in the name of harmony and prosperity, can somehow cause so much hate and resentment, and sometimes, human misery. Depending on how you wish society to progress, it is now so difficult to say who is right and who is wrong; or who is good and who is evil.

LKY may be a dream-come-true for many, yet he is also the worst nightmare for many others. Is he the greatest son Singapore ever had or just a dictator with a bad attitude? For now, we can only debate about it. Only history can tell.

    Shadower Good morning MWS

Awesome article. Keeps one in deep thought for a bit. I guess time will tell of LKY's legacy. Is utter ruthlessness required to keep a country running like clock work and with top notch efficiency? Indeed there is a difference between intelligence and being wise. Can a technocrat also show humanity and compassion? What if compassion shown is interpreted as weakness?
There are things one tries hard to remember, and there are things one doesn't forget.

    Keep soldiering MWS.
