THE MUSICAL SIDE OF ACCELERATED LEARNING

Posted by Unknown On Sunday, February 15, 2009 3 comments

As a parent, musician and one who has been in the education industry for more than two decades, I realize the importance and place of music in the development of one's intelligence. While my sons and I can each play three instruments, my husband can only play one instrument. My boys, however, are better than me because they have perfect pitch while I only have a good ear. The difference in the ability is largely due to the stimulation that both of them received from the time they were in my womb and other environmental factors as well!!! I used to play classical music and put the headphones of my walkman/discman on my tummy when I was expecting my first boy. While carrying my younger boy, I was in the church band playing the keyboard for services and attending band practices till one month before I delivered. My older boy started his music lessons at the age of 4 while my younger boy started at the age of 3.

Have read volumes of articles from various journals and magazines about the functions and benefits of learning how to play a musical instrument and how that activity can actually stimulate the brain cells, help in coordination and even develop one's intelligence, I have always placed an emphasis on my boys' music education and now, I can see that investment paying dividends as both are musically gifted. So for those of you who have young children, perhaps the following article might convince you to let your kids learn music to enrich their lives and to develop multiple intelligence.

THE MUSICAL SIDE OF ACCELERATED LEARNING by Peter Julian, MA

You may already know from earlier articles that 'accelerated learning' means finding ways to optimize the activity of the mind to enhance the learning experience. A proven method of doing so is to incorporate music in the accelerated learning curriculum.

Some types of music may not aid the learning process, and could even be detrimental. Music which contains a prescribed number of beats per minute, however, has been shown to accelerate the learning process. This is because that kind of music actually 'entrains' brainwave activity to open the mind to learning.

When we discuss brainwave activity, we're talking about the frequencies emitted by the neo-cortex (learning center) as having the greatest effect on learning acceleration.

One of the pioneers of accelerated learning, Dr. Georgi Lozanov, determined through his research that music played at 60 beats per minute resulted in the type of brainwave activity needed for learning. Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major K 448, for example, is written in this meter.

Dr. Alfred Tomatis, in his 1991 essay, "Pourquoi Mozart?", coined the term "Mozart Effect" when he shared his research conclusion that Baroque music, particularly Mozart's, was written in the perfect meter to stimulate the brainwave activity necessary to accelerate learning.

Additionally, though controversial, research by the University of California, Irvine, also concluded that specific pieces of music composed by Mozart, when played in a controlled learning environment, could enhance the student's ability to absorb new information quickly, and even raise certain IQ test results temporarily.

A phrase that cropped up during the expansion of this field of research is "accessing the genius mind", or putting the mind into the best state for unfettered learning, in part by using music.

An intriguing offshoot of this field is the work of Dr. John Diamond of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Diamond's work with subjects whose hearing he artificially restricted proved what many scientists in this field believe, that even the hearing impaired can benefit educationally from the introduction of music of varied patterns into accelerated learning curriculum.

One final giant in the field of music and accelerated learning must be included in our discussion. The late Dr. John-David created three brilliant works which include music to entrain the brain waves of the listener. Those works-Environmental Learning, Brain-Mind Expansion Intensive and Eliminating Self Sabotage, can be investigated further at the BrainSpeak.com.

The inclusion of music, whether to create the best environment for learning, or to entrain the very activity of the brain, is an essential part of your best accelerated learning program.

ANOTHER COUP IN MY KITCHEN

Posted by Unknown On 11 comments

Last Sunday, I blogged about how my younger boy cooked dinner for the family in this post called My Boy Takes Over The Kitchen. Following that successful attempt, he declared that he would cook dinner for us EVERY SUNDAY. Frankly, I did not take him seriously and went out happily with a friend to DOME, Island Plaza for my usual Sunday afternoon tea while his daddy took him to his piano class.Prior to that, he did ask me what are the ingredients needed to make Hokkien Mee and I wrote a list for him.

Happily, I had my usual Mocha (the staff there know I like it piping hot) and scones after which I walked around and got pretty bored. On the way home, I had a phone call and my boy declared that he had already peeled the prawns and that everything was ready except for my presence!!! Hurriedly, my friend drove me home. When I went to the kitchen, I was pleasantly surprised to see this:

My boy had painstakingly shelled the prawns and kept them in a container.

He had seen me making Hokkien Mee before and kept the shells aside as he knew that he had to boil the shells to make the soup. He did not do anything till I came home as he did not know which pot to use and feared his mother's nagging if he had used the wrong one :-).

So it was pretty easy. I took out the pot and instructed him to pour the shells into the water.
This is what it looked like at the beginning.

These are the prawn shells after Nick boiled them for some time.

And here's the cooked prawns, nicely peeled
but some looked a bit mutated hehe:-).

The soup being boiled over a slow fire....

My favorite - bean sprouts.

The yellow noodles....

The soup when it was all ready....

The other condiments...

Finally - it was ready!! Voila! C'est tres bien!
Home-made Hokkien Mee - lovingly prepared by my boy with a little bit of help from yours truly.

For all the work that was involved in the preparation and the time taken, it is really easier to buy from the hawkers BUT the taste if home-made Hokkien Mee is unbeatable!!!
Try making it yourself and you will know what I mean :-).

WHY DID GOD MAKE MOTHERS?

Posted by Unknown On 0 comments

1. She’s the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.

2. Mostly to clean the house.

3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did God make mothers?

1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.

2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.

3. God made my Mum just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.

What ingredients are mothers made of?

1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.

2. They had to get their start from men’s bones. Then they mostly use
string, I think.

Why did God give you your mother & not some other mum?

1. We’re related.

2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people’s mums like me.

What kind of little girl was your mum?

1. My mum has always been my mum and none of that other stuff.

2. I don’t know because I wasn’t there, but my guess would be pretty
bossy.

3. They say she used to be nice.

What did mum need to know about dad before she married him?

1. His last name.

2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer?

3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?

Why did your mum marry your dad?

1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mum eats a lot.

2. She got too old to do anything else with him.

3. My grandma says that Mum didn’t have her thinking cap on.

Who’s the boss at your house?

1. Mum doesn’t want to be boss, but she has to because dad’s such a goof ball.

2. Mum. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.

3. I guess Mum is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What’s the difference between mums & dads?

1. Mums work at work and work at home & dads just go to work at work.

2. Mums know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.

3. Dads are taller & stronger, but mums have all the real power ’cause
that’s who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend’s.

4. Mums have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.

What does your mum do in her spare time?

1. Mothers don’t do spare time.

2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.

What would it take to make your mum perfect?

1. On the inside she’s already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of
plastic surgery.

2. Diet. You know, her hair. I’d diet, maybe blue.

If you could change one thing about your Mum, what would it be?

1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I’d get rid of that.

2. I’d make my Mum smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it and not me.

3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of
her head.

WET PANTS

Posted by Unknown On 0 comments

Come with me to a third grade classroom…..

There is a nine-year-old kid sitting at his desk and all of a sudden, there is a puddle between his feet and the front of his pants are wet. He thinks his heart is going to stop because he cannot possibly imagine how this has happened. It’s never happened before, and he knows that when the boys find out he will never hear the end of it. When the girls find out, they’ll never speak to him again as long as he lives.

The boy believes his heart is going to stop; he puts his head down and prays this prayer, ‘Dear God, this is an emergency! I need help now! If not, five minutes from now I’m dead meat.’

He looks up from his prayer and here comes the teacher with a look in her eyes that says he has been discovered.

As the teacher is walking toward him, a classmate named Susie is carrying a goldfish bowl that is filled with water. Susie trips in front of the teacher and inexplicably dumps the bowl of water in the boy’s lap.

The boy pretends to be angry, but all the while is saying to himself, ‘Thank you, Lord! Thank you, Lord!’
Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule, the boy is the object of sympathy. The teacher rushes him downstairs and gives him gym shorts to put on while his pants dry out.

All the other children are on their hands and knees cleaning up around his desk. The sympathy is wonderful. But as life would have it, the ridicule that should have been his has been transferred to someone else - Susie.
She tries to help, but they tell her to get out. You’ve done enough, you klutz!’
Finally, at the end of the day, as they are waiting for the bus, the boy walks over to Susie and whispers, ‘You did that on purpose, didn’t you?’ Susie whispers back, ‘I wet my pants once too.’

May God help us see the opportunities that are always around us to do good…

Each and everyone one of us may be going through tough times right now, but God is getting ready to bless you in a way that only He can. Keep the faith.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE ALL BECAME ...??

Posted by Unknown On 0 comments

We are currently living in a society which seems to have lost its way. Many are beginning to realize that in their quest for money and material objects, they sacrificed “wealth” and are now realizing that they are bankrupt, either financially, emotionally, physically or spiritually.

The current financial crisis is just a symptom of a greater crisis we have either experienced or exhibited: a crisis of courtesy. As a society we have become so self absorbed in the “what’s in it for me mentality” and “it’s someone else’s fault or problem” that we have lost sight of the responsibility we have to each other. We are provided a great opportunity in this “crisis” to reassess our values and our actions. What impact would it have on our society if each of us made a conscious effort to be courteous to the people that we came in contact?

Webster’s Dictionary defines courteous as,“marked by respect for and consideration of others”. The two qualities that demonstrate courtesy: respect and consideration are both very powerful. Respect can be defined as,"giving high or special regard". Consideration can be defined as “thoughtful and sympathetic regard.” Regard is defined as; “care” and care can be defined as, “interest or concern for.” By definition, acting courteously toward others demands that we place high importance on individuals and that we exhibit care and concern for the other person. There is a shift from selfish to selfless.

* How often have we neglected the common courtesy of returning a person’s phone call or not taking a few seconds to respond to their e-mail?Binatone iDECT X2i Digital Cordless Phone With Answering Machine Pictures, Images and Photos

* How many times have we heard of the mad rush to a department store in which someone is injured as a result of a sale?

* How many times have we prevented someone from entering our travel lane or we have tried to force ourselves in to the travel lane to get ahead of someone else?

heavy traffic Pictures, Images and Photos

* Our news is filled with stories of individuals and companies that have demonstrated a concern only for themselves. Although there may be a period of time where the consequence of our actions is not experienced, payment is eventually demanded regardless of the size of the violation.

What would happen if we demonstrated simple courtesies to each other such as:

* returning a phone call or an email

* letting someone in line or not trying to get ahead of someone in line

* holding a door for someone

* saying “thank you” or “please,”Thank You Pictures, Images and Photos

* volunteering your time to someone in need

* not passing judgment on someone else or

* demonstrating compassion.

To be courteous requires an exercise in humility as well as a belief in abundance. In being courtesy you demonstrate the importance and value of those around you in high regard as well as an understanding that there is enough for everyone.

It has been said that our actions are like boomerangs, they deliver back with amazing accuracy what we put out. Many are also familiar with the law of the harvest in that we reap what we sow. How often have we ignored the natural laws of either the boomerang or the harvest? Just as you will not get corn if you plant peas: you will not get abundance and peace if you plant greed and disharmony.

We are fortunate that we have the ability to decide what we throw out to society and what we plant. With proper action, attention and patience, the laws do not deviate in the end. We will reap abundance if choose to plant acts of courtesy and release our boomerangs with acts of respect and consideration for others.

IF YOU LOVE A VEGETARIAN....

Cabbage always has a heart;
Green beans string along.
You're such a Tomato,
Will you Peas to me belong?
You've been the Apple of my eye,
You know how much I care;
So Lettuce get together,
We'd make a perfect Pear.
Now, something's sure to Turnip,
To prove you can't be Beet;
So, if you Carrot all for me
Let's let our tulips meet.
Don't Squash my hopes and dreams now,
Bee my Honey, dear;
Or tears will fill Potato's eyes,
While Sweet Corn lends an ear.
I'll Cauliflower shop and say
Your dreams are Parsley mine.
I'll work and share my Celery,
So be my Valentine.

I posted the above poem in my other blog Masterwordsmith@Writers.Inc. last night and Kak Teh left the following comment there:

I will be your carrot cake,
if you will be my salad,
will sit and enjoy our aubergine bake,
while we listen to our ballad,
with dhall our life will not be boring,
with plenty of veggies sprouting in spring,
together we remain true and green,
for these veggies are so allurin'

Thanks Kak Teh for your wonderful addendum to the poem!

Have a nice day dear reader!
