Last Saturday was my son's school's Hari Anugerah Pelajar Cemerlang. It was a very proud moment for me as apart from winning four prizes (Physics, Additional Maths, English and first in class), he performed in two presentations. Considering the fact that he broke his finger and knuckle in mid March and had surgery, I think he has recuperated very well physically, and emotionally. There were times I thought he might just give up everything as his finger was in a cast for ages! God is good!
Please enjoy the following clips.
You Raise Up by the school choir.
Together with a few other students, he won the state level competition of Puisi and lagu for 2013 and 2014. Last year, he could not go to Kota Kinabalu to represent Penang as the date was changed a few times and the final date was just before his PMR exam. This year, together with the student in this video and other members, they will be representing Penang in the Pertandingan Puisi dan Lagu 2014 in Kota Baru. I wish them the very best.
Last year's recital where he played Sonata No. 4 in C minor, Op 29, II. Andante Assai can be viewed AT THIS LINK. It is a very tough and rather morbid piece written by Prokofiev for his friend who committed suicide.
And it looks like you are following your brother's footsteps in the musical path!
Love both of you EQUALLY.

I have not had time to update my blog because it has been incredibly busy the past few days.
It was my son's school's prize-giving day on Saturday and then a piano recital yesterday.
In between, I decided to take a deep breath to get what I always wanted - the Farah Fawcett hairstyle - and that took another 4 hours at the hair saloon.
And yes, I did get it haha and am very pleased with the results.
Anyway, here's a recording of my 15+ year old son's recital at KOMTAR, Auditorium A yesterday. He played Toccata from 'Trois Pieces Pour Piano' (under the tutelage of Dr. Jason Tye) on a Bosendorfer grand piano, probably the one and only in Penang.
You know, I cannot imagine what life would be like today if not for Skype!
I would never be able to chat with my son and friends including Angela, Mun Lee and other friends/relatives.
Recently, I came across this beautiful story about one of the most beautiful moments in advertising in the FB wall of an old friend, Goh Boon Hoe (musician, producer and photographer extraordinaire) .
CLICK HERE to read all about this story which is making waves all over.
"That single moment told that entire story in four seconds in a way that no actor could have ever told it." Please watch the video of the two girls.
Then today, I thought hmm why don't I sing with my girlfriend Sarah who migrated to Adelaide a few years ago. We used to sing together in church both as back up singers. She made a comment on my FB wall and asked if I could skype with her. Voila - God made the way!
Initially, Sarah wanted to do 'Because of Who You Are' which I already recorded HERE.
As that song is mainly a solo song and a difficult one too, I suggested we sang Don Moen's 'God will Make A Way."
Here it is. Don Moen's song recorded live via Skype on my Nexus smartphone. It is a much beloved song that I always sing to keep strong and brave in the face of difficulties, disappointments, even despair.
GOD WILL MAKE A WAY by Don Moen sung by Sarah and me. This is the second recording.
Whatever you are feeling now, believe - God will make a way for you. It may not be your way but in time, He will make things beautiful....I am not a religious fanatic but I believe in my God and am not the type to proselyte others. I believe faith is a very personal thing and I respect the right of others to practise other faiths and have close friends from different religions.
Regardless of our faith, one thing is sure. Every single human is likely to face disappointments in life at one point or another. Hence, it is my prayer that this song will lead you to higher plains of your faith as you believe in your God to make the path right for you.
If I remember correctly, Doe Moen wrote this song after he received news of his nephew's tragic death. I have cried buckets, even rivers of tears in my darkest moments crying and singing this song ...believing as I do believe and do cry now...that God will make a way...
God bless.
Selamat berpuasa to all my Muslim readers.
Have a lovely evening!
As I sit here in front of my laptop, I realize how life seems to have passed by fleetingly in the past few years.
I really cannot believe that I have passed the halfway mark.
Just a few days ago, I met up with almost 30 former schoolmates and one of them said if we ever have another reunion in ten years' time, it would have to be a different menu to cater for our toothlessness.:-)
To that, I said ya man...we would need pureed dishes, liquidized vegetables so we had better enjoy our lamb chops for now.
Then she said by then, we would not be able to 'like' posts in Facebook anymore cos of arthritic conditions :-) and I said we could use Talkback haha...
Anyway, when looking back at my past, despite the many failings, failures, wrong decisions and regrets, there have been moments of happiness, miracles, outbursts of joy and outpouring of blessings. And I am thankful I am still alive and got to where I am today because of God. Truly, great is His faithfulness...
With that in mind, I sang this song and recorded it in my Nexus where I do not know how edit unlike in my other androids or tablets.
However, I did stop halfway cos I forgot the lyrics and lost myself for I did not pre-rehearse and did not know where I was hahaha old as I am and I don't want to record it again cos I sang this song with a heart of thanksgiving to God for all He is to me and the way He has blessed my life...not a perfect life but at least I am alive. To record it again would not be spontaneous.
If you want to listen to a sentimental one crooning in thanksgiving to God, then you can CLICK HERE.
Because of who You Are was popularised by Sandi Patti and you can listen to the original here. I love the original cos she really sings so expressively and draws people to God.
Apologies for the half-completed song. It is a moment in time captured by a handphone sound recorded, unedited but just pure gratitude to God.
Really.
May your God bless you and for all who are Muslims, Selamat Berpuasa.
Regardless of what faith you subscribe to, I am sure most of us believe in God...Here is one song that reminds us of how our lives are in God's hands.
May you be lifted up...be encouraged whatever your circumstance...
And put you faith into one pair of hands....
May you be lifted up by the lyrics, the music, the voice, and the beautiful slides. Most of all, may you be blessed always.
This morning, I wrote a tribute on my wall to Rev David Loo - a very dedicated pastor who even when retired, has started a new ministry because of his undying love for God.
This is what I wrote in my Facebook:
Thank you, Rev David Loo, for who you are and what you have done for thousands of believers, friends, relatives and people whom you touched by being a man after God's heart.
Shortly after that posting, my younger son and I decided to do an impromptu recording of the song.
Here it is for all my readers especially Poh Lean, YK and Gem whom I am sure know Rev David Loo:
I just love this song...and all it means...Beautiful lyrics..speaking of ...
A love that lasts...a love that grows...a love that brings out the best in us...May each of you have that kind of love that lasts through the years...
A love that does not abandon...or quit
But one that abides through the years...

Alfred Ho is a Perak-born Malaysian who has been blind since the age of 3. He learned to play guitar and sing, although he has never seen a sheet of music in his life. He learned it all by listening to music and other singers. What a memory!

Alfred Ho is the consummate entertainer with over three decades of performing experience at numerous stageshows, private functions and nightspots across the country. He has endeared himself to audiences for his interpretations of evergreen numbers from legendary crooners Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck, and various country and western performers. Alfred's mellow but powerful voice is irresistible to those who long for the days when songs had words you could actually hear and appreciate -- a time when melodies were not obscured and drowned by crashing guitars, pounding beatboxes and techno rhythms.
This Perak-born Malaysian performer continues to surprise audiences wherever he goes with everything from soothing ballads to rock and roll and even throws in some Spanish, Malay, Cantonese, Japanese and Hokkien numbers to prove his diversity.
Listening to the talented Alfred is a walk down memory lane, reviving gems from past that you may not have even heard on the radio of late. Alfred has such a wide repertoire that he has been known to play for four straight hours, with still some songs to spare.
Struck blind after a bout of measles at the age of three, Alfred showed a love for music from an early age. At Penang's St Nicholas School for the Blind, he taught himself to play the guitar and formed a four-piece schoolboy band called The Sharks.
He later honed his craft doing the pub circuit as a solo guitarist and developed an uncanny sense of being able to 'read' his audience from the stage. His first brush with fame came as a semi-finalist in RTM's Bakat TV, the popular talent show of the 70s.
Alfred also did a few shows called Take Five with a commercial broadcasting station in that period and even cut two EP vinyl records of his own compositions. Two songs, Train To Tennessee and Wendy's Love Song were particularly popular and he recorded several cassettes back then that were played on local airwaves.
In 1984, having garnered a following and dubbed Malaysia's Jose Feliciano, Alfred finally quit his steady job as a telephone operator and went into music fulltime. A decade of performances later, during which no record label was willing to sign him on, Alfred self-produced an album of 22 covers of his favourite hits called "Special Gems".
Today, his loyal fanbase, from ambassadors to royalty, from vinyl connoisseurs to lovers of classic dancing, still speak of Alfred with fondness and continue to enjoy his special brand of music.
Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life.
As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.
As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.
I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.
I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.
The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.
And as I played Amazing Grace, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.
As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothing like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."
Apparently I'm still lost....it's a guy thing.

Thanks to Angela who shared this post via email. I googled and discovered it is written by Paul Anka and featured in The Daily Mail last year.
Excerpt:
Even before I hit my teens, my fantasies centred on hanging out with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. In my dreams, I was living in Las Vegas. And then, bang, I was actually there.
I was a middle-class, 19-year-old of Lebanese extraction and less than spectacular looks who’d had an unexpected Number One hit with my song Diana.
The year was 1959, when Vegas was just a few hotels surrounded by sand and sagebrush — and controlled by the Mob. But it truly was a teenager’s fantasies come true: hot chicks, champagne on ice, gold-plated pink Cadillacs, sharkskin suits.

The Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, whose names form the title of the story. The title is often abbreviated to Liang Zhu and often regarded as the Chinese equivalent of Romeo and Juliet. (Source: HERE)

Recently, Mr TSK sent me the following article.
I remember Mr Ooi Eow Jin from the good old days when I used to have a tv in my home and I spent hours watching not only my favourite programs but also RTM productions.
Today, I don't have a tv in my home and spend my time either reading or surfing.
Still, this is a rare piece that merits a re-post.
Kudos to Mr Jon Chew for writing this beautiful piece.
