I Woofove You, Tiger!

Posted by Unknown On Monday, August 4, 2014 0 comments

Having a dog is more challenging than having our own children. Unlike children who can tell us how they feel esp when they are sick, our dogs can only whine or look mournfully at us. Over the weekend, Tiger had been very ill as I had stupidly changed his kibble diet for 3 consecutive days. I forgot he is a dog and thought he would enjoy variety in his meals.

He started vomiting once on Friday then twice on Saturday. By Sunday morning, his condition worsened. The poor darling scratched the sofa to let me know he threw up there. By 9 p.m., he had thrown up four times and was so weak. Yet, he stuck close to me never letting me out of his sight. Even when I went to the bathroom, he waited outside the shower cubicle patiently. Seeing his delicate condition, I prayed and interceded like I never had for four consecutive hours, crying to God to have mercy on Tiger and to comfort and heal him.

Watching him lie on his side yearning to be close to me and for me to caress and comfort him melted my heart. Looking most helpless, his eyes still shone with so much ♥ as if to say...hey mum...thanks for being here for me. I just laid hands on his tummy and prayed and prayed...through it all, my husband was steadfastly believing Tiger would be ok. By 2.30a.m, Tiger zzz but woke up at 3.30a.m. and scratched the door - his usual let-me-out-of-the-bedroom signal. The minute i opened the door, pooooooi...turbo vomit and splat..

Another puddle of greenish brownish puke pudding.

Head hung low, Tiger turned to me as if to say, 'I'm sorry, mum. You have to clean up my puke pudding again. Soon after cleaning up, i sat beside him as he lay on his side on his doggy bed in the sitting room. After a while, his breathing stabilised. I got up, turned to him and said, 'Tiger, let's sleep in mummy's room.' Slowly, he followed me upstairs and this time, slept in his little corner with his teddy bear. Still, I prayed till I fell asleep. This morning, Tiger seems to be back to his normal self. God is good and listens to the cries from our heart because all creatures great and small, the Lord God loves us all.

Special thanks to Poh Ai and Eric, Tiger's groomer for their invaluable advice! I thank God He healed Tiger and am sure Tiger has forgiven repentant and forgetful mum for changing the kibbles without the 50:50 combo. Truly, Tiger has touched my life and changed me for the better in so many ways because canine lessons from him last forever. I ♥♥♥ you, Tiger!!!

Treating Them Right

Posted by Unknown On Thursday, June 12, 2014 0 comments

WHEN the parent thinks that no one is in the house down the street where two dogs live, he stops his car outside the house, winds down the window and lets his angelic looking three-year-old scream at the dogs. She turns furious when the dogs do not respond, the father then drives right up to the gate to provoke the dogs. As the homeowner, what would you do? By the time one opens the gate or walks out, the car zooms off. Each day this repeats until the homeowner moves.

Down the road, a little girl walking to the playground with her grandmother picks up a stone and throws it into a house in an attempt to hit the dogs who were quietly eating their dinner in the garden. After being told that it was unacceptable behaviour, she turns up a few days later with a stick instead.

The neighbourhood children, who range from primary aged kids to teens, find it entertaining to stand outside houses to scream at pet dogs, so much so, the dogs recognise the bullies and when they pass by the house, the dogs get agitated and bark or are scared because the kids have thrown things at them. It's sad because if the kids would only get to know the dogs – they would be friends.

While my two dogs are not perfect (the postman will vouch for their craziness when he drops by), they now bark at the kids who have targeted them.

Once a 12-year-old who torments my dogs was found hanging like Spider-Man on the walled fence. Curious at his behaviour, I asked what he was doing, he replied "Tengok aje (Just looking)." I have come home to sticks, stones, firecracker debris and the like in my driveway. The first irony is that my dog thinks that they are all toys to be collected in a pile. The second irony is that the security cameras pick up these shenanigans, yet nothing can be done.

Parents are too busy to deal with their bully kids because mistreating animals especially dogs in this country is not seen as a problem and some venerate it.

Once a grandparent laughed and said, they are just playing, it's OK. No it's not OK, it is never OK.

This grandma's comments reminded me of a recent incident when I was on holiday and a friend had her sweet little friendly dog on a leash when a little boy holding his father's hand exclaimed: "Look, Puppy Dog!" He then walked up to the happy pooch and kicked the dog. His father just pulled him and walked away.

We were so angry. Immediately alarm bells rang in my mind and I thought, this child was growing up a bully and his parents were not even addressing the issue.

What and who will he kick next?

Many use religious beliefs for the basis of excusing animal abuse, yet it is a matter of faith that we be kind to animals and there is moral significance to look after those without a voice. Sadly, however, in this country the bullies are not just the children but the grown men who go scot-free for killing dogs with a bow and arrow, the municipality workers who brutally kill strays, the father who points out dogs and tells his kids that dogs are evil instead of teaching his kids not to harm animals and the women who smile and do nothing when their children stand outside houses and bark at dogs. Once there was an elderly woman who was stomping and lunging outside my gate trying to make the dogs bark but instead they just lay looking confused at her behaviour.

While it is commendable that in 2008, Malaysia endorsed the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare, declarations are just that – a statement with no bite when violated. Not only does Malaysia need the Animal Welfare Bill to be enacted soon, animal welfare officers recruited need to be passionate about rights for all animals and be trained accordingly. It's sad that only when there are laws with big fines do people pay attention but that is the reality. So once the bill is passed, regulations need to be refined to ensure that violators no matter who they may be are persecuted and also educated.

While these processes are put in order, animal rights education should simultaneously be taught in schools and incorporated practically in religious and moral lessons. To educate the public, government-run campaigns highlighting our duty to treat animals with kindness should be carried out to undo the strong belief and teaching commending animal abuse especially dog abuse.

There is a strong link between bullying helpless beings and harming humans.

We have become so phobic to the point of cruelty. We deny the blind increased mobility by banning guide dogs.

How then can we call ourselves a society when we stop access for the blind because the so called able-bodied are too disabled in thinking to go past preconceptions and misconceptions.

Mahatma Gandhi has been quoted as saying "the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated". If there is truth in Gandhi's words, then we have a long way to go.

What A Difference He Has Made to My Life

Posted by Unknown On Sunday, June 1, 2014 2 comments

The past few months have been soul-searching months for me in that I was consumed by existentionalist questions. In a nutshell, I wondered where I am going and what I have been doing in my life.

It is truly gratifying for me to say that I have finally found myself and am happy, in fact, at the happiest point in my life. If I were to go tomorrow, I can say I have lived with no regrets.

Looking back, I learnt the following lessons.

1. I learnt not to worry or fret if things don't work out the way I want. For e.g. if there is no parking space, just go round and round to look for one. If there is an idiotic driver in front of me, just carry on following him and thank him for helping me to drive safely.

2. I learnt not to get angry. If someone says something which is not in line with my perspective, just let it go. No need to argue. It is a problem that he/she has to deal with and not one that I should resolve.

3. I learnt not to feel deeply if I cannot handle it. To illustrate, my dog and I were attacked by a Rottweiller last week and I learnt to forgive the man who did not put the gigantic dog on a leash and who did not come to my rescue but watched the scenario 30 feet away. I learnt to be thankful for the fact that my dog and I were not injured.

It was a pleasant evening so I took Tiger for a walk in my neighbourhood. When I saw the Rottweiller about 40 feet away, I turned and led Tiger in the opposite direction. I was petrified as my eyes had met that of the Rottweiller. In seconds, he was before me and lunged at Tiger. I pulled Tiger up in the air by the leash and swung him around in the air!!!! Then the leash came off and Tiger landed on his feet and the Rotten Rottweiller attacked him - both snarling at each other. To my amazement, Tiger hid under the Rotten Rottweiller's body - my pint-sized Westie stood comfortably under that fiend and he snarled at the dog's t*sti*** ready to bite if the Rotten Rottweiller did anything. Insane with fear and panic, I was glued to the ground - and wondered what would be worse - me mauled by the rottie or Tiger mauled or Tiger running away and me not being able to catch him. All the while, the owner stood THIRTY FEET AWAY and shouted - he will not bite as he is just a puppy. Ya - right. I screamed like a hyena but no one came to my aid - NOT EVEN THE COWARDLY owner who still stood 30 ft away and later threw a PEBBLE at the dogs. I called out for Tiger and the brave westie came towards me and let me put on his leash. Then I carried him and we went off with me scolding the owner for being so irresponsible. Thank God both Tiger and I were safe although we were both very shaken for an hour or so.

4. I learnt to forget the past. If someone has done wrong in the past...let it be. FORGIVE. Start on a new slate. I don't bear grudges but when people used to remind me of some episodes, the anger would return. Now, I learnt not to get angry or disappointed in all circumstances. I reserve my feelings for happiness and joy and not to take life so seriously. Just laugh it off or brush it aside. :-)

5. I learnt to take one day at a time. I do not live by the clock nor am I ruled by people's opinions or dirt on the floor so I learnt to let go....to close one eye to dirt on the floor by sweeping it and telling myself - it is ok..just sweep and not get angry that my 'precious' floor is dirty. It is no big deal.

I found happiness in just being positive...being happy by being who I am.

I found happiness in not living in a box. If I want to take a longer time strolling in the garden, I just do it without worrying if it is time for Tiger's dinner.

If I want to spend...just spend lah without worrying if I have enough money to last a month.

Most of all, I learnt to treasure what is beautiful, important, precious and real without being sentimental.

And I am happy.

What a difference it has made in my life!

Three days ago, I spent the whole day and evening with a very precious friend - my one and only old friend left in Penang (the others migrated or moved to KL). There have been many times I wanted to visit her and to treasure what we share but was bound by my son's activities. Since it's the school break, we arranged to meet and ate, shopped, laughed and had such a great time together.

And when I said shopped, we really shopped haha...I bought 2 pairs of pants, 1 pair of shorts, a skirt, household stuff, a blouse, a shirt for my son and other stuff. And we ate so much..at the Japanese vegetarian restaurant for lunch and later had tea at Winter Warmers, Queensbay Mall after our shopping. After tea, we shopped again! What a wonderful day spent together. I have known her since 1991.

Happiness is a state of mind. I learnt not to be boxed by past experiences, by fears of the future or by expectations.

Many of the above lessons - I learnt them from my dog, Tiger!!!

Tiger has no cares in this world. He worries not, takes little offense to other animals. By nature, he should hate cats but after initial apprehension, had no qualms about  getting to know a cat who 'adopted' us. This tabby cat purrs in a manja manner whenever she sees Tiger and me and sleeps on my doorstep. She approaches Tiger in a friendly manner. Initially, he would be on guard (without barking) and through the weeks, they finally made contact with no incident. Then, one evening, the cat entered my house via the front door. I was the one who screamed from the fear that he would attack her ...No such thing...The tabby just ran away from my scream and sadly, never returned. So sad! See the photos:

Tiger looking apprehensively at the cat who was about to enter my home..

See Tiger's cocked ears - :-) He was not vicious or unhospitable to the cat...Just kept quiet while I was screaming away :-)

Tiger accepted the car despite inherent instinctive apprehension about the cats. He gave both the cat and himself the chance to get to know each other! It was me who was the epic failure :-).

And my dog just loves to watch Pokemon videos..:-) He knows what he likes...pursues it and throws caution to the wind even though he is aware of the scolding he will get once my husband sees him on the bed. He even watched the Thomas Cup finals with me on Sunday evening!

Tiger has changed my life in so many bizarre ways and has made such a difference to my life!

I just learnt to let go and to be happy because life is too short to sweat over anything.

:-)

Wishing everyone happiness that lasts....:-)

Bionic Dogs Given Another Chance

Posted by Unknown On Wednesday, April 30, 2014 0 comments

It has been almost eight years now since I started blogging in May 2008. Through the years, I have seen how the world has turned into a colder and more indifferent place. Yesterday, I drove my son to the hospital for his review with the surgeon and I almost exploded with frustration because of MANY inconsiderate drivers who either hog service roads just to wait for an empty parking lot even though it was clear that no one was leaving, people who double park and obstruct the road, others who overtake on the left at breakneck speed. If anyone can drive in Penang without losing their cool, that person is a saint. To remind myself that there ARE still kind and goodhearted souls in this world, I decided to look for posts which feature hope...not just for people, but for dogs.

Lo and behold, I came across this heartwarming post which showcase five beautiful dogs who have been given a new lease in life via prosthetic limbs.

The Faithful Friend's Ecstatic Happiness

Posted by Unknown On Monday, July 22, 2013 2 comments

I adopted Tiger from Mr. B in late December and since then, he has visited Tiger five times. On each occasion, the minute Tiger sees him at the gate, he goes into delirious mode barking ecstatically as though it was raining bones and dog strips from heaven.

Tiger sits in the front seat obediently whenever I drive anywhere.

On one occasion, Mr B brought his whole family as his eldest son had just returned from UK. Then, Tiger nearly broke down the grill door and leapt at every member of the family - thoroughly confused - as he did not know who to lick first. When they left, Tiger whined, whimpered and moaned for at least a good four hours. You see, dogs are the most faithful friends man can have in life. Even though it had been months since he had seen the eldest son, Tiger never forgot him or the other family members, particularly, Mr B.

Just last week, Mr B popped by again and Tiger recognized him before I realized it was him. As usual, he was rocking and shaking the grill door. He jumped and pawed at Mr B the minute he was in the house but after the warm and excited exchange, Tiger went back to sleep as it was his usual nap time. Undoubtedly, I know Tiger will always keep Mr B and his family in his heart regardless. That is true love and faithfulness.

Not only that, Tiger shows he has never forgotten Kim, the golden retriever belonging to Mr and Mrs B with whom Tiger played and bullied. Two weeks ago, we passed by a golden retriever in the neighbourhood and Tiger went crazy and jumped around in the car (I was driving) barking excitedly and whining when the golden retriever was out of sight.

Last weekend, a former student came to visit me and when his dad came to pick him up, the family dog, Brownie, a golden retriever, had come along. Tiger went hysterical because he thought it was Brownie. Initially, Brownie barked aggressively at Tiger but as Tiger and I approached him, she calmed down and made friendly overtures at Brownie. It was quite a sight to behold - Brownie reaching down from the window in her attempt to sniff/lick Tiger who tried to jump up to do the same.

Anyway, it is unfortunate I never thought of filming all those sequences I described here but I would like to share one video that Angela sent me to illustrate the deep love that dogs have for their owners.
The following video was uploaded a few days ago. After spending six months in duty, Lieutenant Gary Daugherty returned home to his little girl, Bugaboo. Watch the following video and you may then understand what I was describing earlier in this post. I am sure cats do the same to their owners :-).
Sadly, after a few days, the video was removed by the owner. Sorry! I will always be eternally grateful to Mr B and KL who arranged for the adoption. And for sure, I know the mutual and deep love, attachment and bond that Tiger shares with Mr B and his family. Truly, dogs are the best companions and most faithful friend man can have.

Currently, Tiger is very unsettled as there is a dog in the neighbourhood that is in heat. With the mating season and the testersterones of neighbourhood dogs raging wildly, it has been particularly noisy not only in my house but in the neighbourhood. Regardless, my family love Tiger to bits. Wishing all pet owners wonderful moments with their pets. Do share your experiences with your pets. Have a nice day!

You WILL SURELY Love This!

This is really cute - tell the dog to sneeze and see what he does.

I have no idea how they do this:

TYPE IN a command and see what happens like ... sit, roll over, down, beg, stand, jump, sing, shake, fetch, play dead, etc.

And, it's also very cute if you type in a command that's not recognized!!

I typed 'Yelp' and the response was "I'd do that if I knew what it was..."

And then I typed  'Whine' and the response was 'Let's keep the commands simple, ok?" LOL!!!

Make sure you type in "Kiss," too, but do it last.

Have fun! And yes, my dog takes Heartguard. I hope yours does too!

The Snoutless Hero

Posted by Unknown On Wednesday, June 12, 2013 0 comments

A shepherd-mix who lost her snout saving two girls returned on Sunday to her owner’s home in the southern Philippines after eight months of veterinary treatment in the United States, earning a new title as “dog ambassador of goodwill”.

On Saturday, two-year-old Kabang, her tail wagging, faced television cameras and fans at Manila International airport and toured a nearby upscale shopping mall and park frequented by dog lovers. She was an instant star.

Authorities are planning a short motorcade on Monday in honour of Kebanog, which means “different colours” in local dialect, in the southern town of Zamboanga.

Deaf But Love Abounds

Posted by Unknown On Friday, April 26, 2013 0 comments

Being deaf has many challenges. It can be frustrating to feel isolated from the world around you. One man says, “I hate having to rely on others to tell me what’s going on, I hate looking like the prize idiot when someone talks to me.” But having someone around that can understand what you’re going through can make a world of difference. Such is true for a Connecticut boy and his dog.

Last month, an eight-year-old dog called Barney was rescued from an Oxford, CT property along with three other dogs and some farm animals. When he was examined by a vet, it was determined that Barney was deaf. Knowing how difficult it is to place blind and deaf dogs, animal control staff hoped a home could be found for him.

The Unsung Hero

Posted by Unknown On Tuesday, April 2, 2013 0 comments

In February, the organisers of Cluj Shorts International Film Festival invited Hisyam Salleh and Rahmah Ghazali to submit their eight-minute documentary titled A Stray Hero for the film festival. Their documentary about an elderly couple's mission to rescue stray animals has been shortlisted for screening at an international film festival. It will be screened at Cinema Victoria, Cluj-Napoca in Romania together with 85 other films selected from 400 short films which were submitted to the film festival. It has heartening to note that their dedicated sacrifice for canine darlings has been recognised and notably, their film is the only one shortlisted from the Asean region.

A Stray Hero has received over 10,000 views on Vimeo.

Watch the video AT THIS LINK and be bowled over by their dedication, compassion and love for dogs and cats.

Produced at the cost of RM3000 by Hisyam, 29 (a freelance video journalist) and his wife Rahmah Ghazali,
A Stray Hero is about former contractor Pak Mie or Muhd Azmi Ismail and his wife, who despite being Muslims, have unconditional love for the strays. To date,  they have rescued over 600 animals and have no qualms about sleeping in their car parked outside their makeshift shelter to ensure their darlings are safe and sound.

According to Life With Dogs:

They spend their savings to help these dogs and often go without so the animals can get what they need. “No matter how much money we have…we would spend it on them, not ourselves,” said Pak Mie.
They couple has pawned all of the wife’s jewelry to help feed the stray dogs.  They sleep in a car parked outside the shelter to make sure no one harms the animals at night. For them the sacrifice of a normal life is worth it to save these special animals. “The most special animal in this world are dogs, and we can’t find it in any other animal,” said Pak Mie. MORE HERE.
You can visit Pak Mie's blog site HERE.

I salute Pak Mie and his wife for their commitment, compassion and love for animals and their dedication to their mission which they have been carrying out against all odds.

Various groups including Red FM and Pet Project Malaysia have organized events to help them out.

BFM intereviewed them and you can listen to it HERE. The Star also featured a report about the film at this link.

Please consider how you can help Pak Mie in his mission. Thank you!!

Unabashed Devotion to Loving

Posted by Unknown On Sunday, March 24, 2013 1 comments

I can wax lyrical about my beloved dog from dawn till dusk and know that many other pet lovers out there can do the same.

Truly, dogs are the best friends that man can have because of many reasons. As I grow older, I am increasingly more discerning when it comes to human relationships. Suffice to say, I trust few and talk to even fewer to preserve my sanity. Frankly, I have never been happier this way. The most unusual trend is that all the new friends I have made in the last one year are over 65 years of age and for that I am most grateful because they are ever willing to share their wisdom and life's precious lessons with me.

Coming back to the topic, I doth declare that Tiger IS my best friend for many reasons.

1. He is non-judgemental.

When I am late in giving him his meal for one reason or another, he does not complain nor does he judge me for being less responsible.

If I do not respond to his manja overtures, he still continues to love me and looks at me with the deepest most adoring eyes.

Even though my younger son has chosen a very dark piece by Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No 2 for his LTCL exam this year, Tiger still sits at his feet faithfully, tolerating the awful melody quietly. His ears twitch non-stop because the melody is so :-( and yet he loves my son enough to sit through the whole practice.

On the contrary, I grumble non-stop and unceasingly question why on earth he chose such a piece and then once he begins his piece, I flee to my room, lock the door and hide....:-(  CLICK HERE to listen to that piece which Nick said he chose (despite the unmelodious and dark nature of the piece) because he wanted to learn many techniques from that composition. *salute

This scenario alone has taught me LOTS about love and how important it is to be non-judgemental and not to condemn people. At the same time, I do admit that my decision to stop political blogging has helped me to develop positively as I don't look out for the negative side of topics but look at what can be done (realistically, not idealistically) to make our world a better place.

2. He is sensitive to my mood.

If I am in a tensed or irritable mood, he stays away from me and does not nag, moralise or lecture. At the same time, when I call him, he responds and is there to listen to me or to make me happy just by being who he is.

3. He is faithful and true in all circumstances.

Regardless of whether I give him his favourite treats or not, he is always there for me, waiting for me when I come home, ready to greet me, jump on me and to wait for me to cuddle him and to tell him how much I love him.

4. Tiger is understanding and accepts change with no temper tantrums

On rainy days when he cannot go out for his walks, all I need to do is to tell him that he cannot have his usual romp because of weather conditions and then he will docilely sit in his favourite corner and look at me. Later, when he has to do his business, he will go to the bathroom on his own...

5. Tiger has taught my family to be more caring and sensitive to his needs.

Initially, we never said goodbye to Tiger when we left the house for errands etc. I did notice his sad expression and thought nothing of it but after two weeks, I would bid him goodbye and noticed he was less despondent...then I would let him listen to instrumental music to soothe his nerves :-) and upon my return, would find him sleeping quietly. Thereafter, I told my husband and son to always remember to pat his head and to tell Tiger that they were going out but would return soon to play with him. Indeed, it has really made a world of difference!

6. If anything, Tiger has taught me to be more loving and understanding and that above all else, happiness matters.

In my life, I have met all kinds of characters - and have little affinity for choleric personalities who:

..."can dominate people of other temperaments with their strong wills, especially phlegmatic types, and can become dictatorial or tyrannical. Many great charismatic military and political figures were cholerics. They like to be in charge of everything and are good at planning, as they often can immediately see a practical solution to a problem." Source: HERE

Tiger has reminded me that not everyone is like that and that regardless, we should just enjoy the joy that each day brings and fret not over such characters but to be happy at all times.

Suffice to say that I have never been happier since Tiger came into my life. I see life very differently and am constantly filled with many moments of joy, happiness and fulfilment knowing that even as I shower Tiger with love, affection and sometimes spoil him now and then, his devotion and love for my family and me is simply incomparable. His faithfulness and dedication to guarding the home is astounding and barks only when necessary.

Today, I surfed the net for stories about dogs and came across this site which warmed my heart knowing that pets are real blessings to their owners.

The story that I love most and really made me cry quite unabashedly is:

Dog of the Year Photo Gallery- Photo 18

Of course, all the other stories are beautiful and most inspiring so please check out all 19 stories.

Have a lovely day and if you are thinking of getting a dog or a cat, please adopt one rather than buy one. There are many owners out there who want to give away their pets for various reasons/circumstances so do ask around. I can assure you that the dividend for such a decision is priceless!

Reunited After Ten Years

Posted by Unknown On Sunday, March 17, 2013 0 comments

Call it fate, or destiny, but a basset hound named Ginger has been reunited with her owner after 10 years apart.   On a whim, Jamie Carpentier decided to check out a website he had never been on.  He had recently lost his boxer and had decided not to get another dog, but something made him peruse the listings of dogs up for adoption at the Humane Society for Greater Nashua.  That’s where he saw the posting for the dog he hadn’t seen in ten years, Ginger.

Carpentier got divorced 10 years ago, when Ginger was just 3 years old.  His ex-wife had custody of the dog and unbeknownst to him had surrendered her for adoption not long after.  Ginger was re-homed but recently her elderly owner could not care for her anymore and took her to the humane society, where she has waited for 3 months for a new home.
