THE PIANO PRINCIPLE

While surfing the internet this evening, I was thinking a lot about my older boy who is away at university pursuing a degree in contemporary music. I thought of the time when he, my younger boy and I used to jam together…both of them on the violins and me on my piano. I can still recall the last time we played together - Moon River and Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up”. It is in moments like this when I miss my older boy so very much.

As I blog this, my younger boy just came to give me a hug. *sigh* In a few years, it will be an empty nest with just hubby and me alone at home…And the house will be quiet. As it is, I miss the strains of my older boy’s violin and his noisy electric guitar. Now, it is my younger boy's turn to and his violin pieces and of course his favourite ‘Canon’ by Pachelbel. I guess that is the circle of life….

Ahhhh sentimental me again…Anyway, along this line of thought, I would like to share with you this inspirational piece called ‘The Piano Principle’. Hope it touches your heart the way it did mine.

Blessings to you and yours. Have a great week!

The Piano Principle by Brad Yates

Imagine walking into someone’s home, and finding the living room dominated by a beautiful grand piano. You ask your hosts for a recital, to which they reply that they don’t play. As you run your hand over the sleek exterior of this magnificent instrument, you think to yourself, “What a shame…”

I think human beings are like grand pianos - incredible creations capable of producing wonderful music. But too often that potential goes untapped. We think that greatness is meant for someone else, that we don’t have the talent (the looks, the money, the time, the breaks…) And so we live lives “of quiet desperation,” occasionally entertaining thoughts of “what if…?”

What if Mozart had hidden his talent? (Or Bowie, or, moving from music, Edison or Gandhi or anyone else who has made a positive difference.) I’m not saying that everyone should feel compelled to live that big, but if one has that inkling… It seems a shame that, as Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “The average person goes to their grave with their music still in them.”

Imagine a world where people felt free to share their grandest music and make a huge positive difference. Or, at the least, were free from the negativity that causes them to hurt themselves and others. Consider what would be possible. That’s a future I want to help to create.

Starmandala Ha ha, more synchronicity! While waiting for Telekom to get my phone working again I decided to go through the laborious process of applying for a grant from a Dutch foundation so I can release my musical archive latest by early 2010. Wish me luck! :-)

Walt Paula, I don't think you will ever have an empty nest. It may seem that way, but like me, your life will always be full. This was another very good post. You are always such a blessing to me.

    Unknown My dear Robin,

WOW! What can I say? I am completely stumped. You know, I scheduled this post TWO MONTHS AGO and I honestly cannot believe how in synch we are...not just this time, but also the last time when you visited my other blog at MASTERWORDSMITH@WRITERS.INC.

Like you, I have not acquired formal music training but I play by ear and I know I have the gift in my life and my sons too. I can compose worship songs and instrumental music that ministers to the soul and spirit just at the touch of the keys and I cannot understand how and why this occurs. One of them has been recorded but I have not sent the other pieces to other places. Sadly, I have put aside my music following a chain of unfortunate events over the years and I think it is time for me to pick it up again...

I love your post and your dream music too. I don't hear my music in dreams but I hear it as I play, the chord progressions and the melody and sometimes, the words that come with it and often these minister to me....

Truly, I agree with you that we are connected. Thanks for inspiring me too. I'll follow you in twitter and we can keep in touch.

Take care and keep in touch.

    hugs
