THE RIGHT AND WRONG OF DECISIONS

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track. The train is coming, and you are just beside the track interchange. You can make the train change its course to the disused track and save most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way?

Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make: Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way, I guess. Exactly, to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally. But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place?

Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was.. This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are. The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational
track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him.

The great critic Leo Velski Julian who told the story said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens.. If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up
sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids.

While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one.

Remember that what's right isn't always popular... And what's popular isn't always right.

Anonymous No matter what kind of difficult situation one may find oneself in, some opening, some opportunity to fight one's way out, can always be found. What's most important is to hold fast to hope, to face the future with courage.

Perakian Perak's Barisan Nasional state executive councillor Datuk Hamidah Osman said female politicians cannot become menteri besar.

Does "what's right isn't always popular... and what's popular isn't always right" apply here?

jtba There's always the 3rd option ... stand in the middle of the track to stop the train ?

Only if there's no such 3rd option , then I would most likely
divert the train . It's a natural preservation of life mechanism in us all.

    Salam.

Anonymous Malaysian Insider had earlier reported Hamidah Osman was not too happy with Zambry’s appointment because she had great expectations to be the country’s first female Menteri Besar.

semuanya OK kot Very relevant. Today's populist ethos is typified by discounts for traffic offences, amnesty for business practices that have gone out of control, special dispensation for amok behaviour in response to "sensitive" issues and the "forgiveness of sins" for untouchable criminals. Malingering and breach of trust have almost become the norm. Everything can be negotiated and everyone has a price.

In this situation, a runaway train will surely have to be sent over the misfits who insist on what is right. Once again, the confusion of the ex-revolutionaries in Animal Farm comes to mind.

I believe through the dark trials of life, in His time, God will open a window or a door for us and lead us out into a better way. Until then, what is needed would be hope that things will get better...

And I think many Malaysians are doing just that even when facing a blank wall...

    God bless you!

Most appropriate post for such a scenario. I might be doing a post on that later - once I can finish my household chores.

    Thanks for the alert.

Take care and God bless you with a wonderful day.

There are those who might be ready to sacrifice themselves for the good of others. However, some of these heroic acts could come from misguided notions while others are genuine acts of courage and bravery.

Thanks for such a sincere comment, JTBA.

    Have a great day!

:-) I am greatly tickled. I have yet to do my rounds of news portals as I was at TNB for a meeting with the Pengurus Kawasan w.r.t. the power failures in my neighbourhood.

Will swing by later to read it once I get round my chores. Chances are that I will do a post on it.

Take care and thanks for the alert.

    Cheers

:-) That is a clever comment. Btw, I grew up wearing bell-bottoms and still have one vintage Levi's bell-bottoms!!! :-)

Take care and have a lovely day.

    Thanks for swinging by.

    Unknown Dear Semuanya OK kot

The word compromise has become a norm and standards have gone down, morals diluted and the importance of core values have diminished through the passing of time.

And many still claim we have progressed!

Oh yes - Orwell was very much ahead of his time when he wrote 'Animal Farm' - as we can see many of its scenario both locally and in the international scene.

Take care and thanks for your thought-provoking comment.

    Have a blessed day!

Penangite Gerakan members need to redouble their efforts and work harder to prove that its national advisor’s comment that the party has lost Penang for good is wrong, party president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said.

    Well, Penangites, what say we?

Take care and have a blessed day! May you continue to be an inspiration and source of strength to those around you, Selvi. Stay in touch,ya?

    Warmest regards

They would have to work overtime and ensure that they have a complete revamp - preferably if they left BN.

At least that is how I feel and I know there are probably many Gerakan members who feel that way too.

Take care and God bless you.

Keep in touch and have a great day!
