THE RECYCLING THAT WE DO NOT NEED!!!

When I was a little girl, my late mother would first examine the straw first, then rinse it before using it. After that, she would bend the straw. When I asked her why she observed this 'ritual' most religiously, she said that some coffee shops would reuse the drinking straws. Feeling quite grossed out, it became part and parcel of my childhood. In time, I abandoned the habit of rinsing the stray thinking that such despicable and unhygienic acts would not be practised by a more educated populace. Imagine my horror when I read THIS ARTICLE in The Star this morning:

GEORGE TOWN: A restaurant here has been caught re-using drinking straws for its customers.

Penang Municipal Council officers were horrified when they saw a worker washing the straws during a spot check on eateries in Pulau Tikus on Wednesday.

“He told us they were going to reuse it. We were shocked and gave him a stern warning,” its public health standing committee member Ong Ah Teong said.

They returned to the restaurant later to verify that their instructions had been followed, he said.

He warned that restaurant owners who committed such misdeeds could face closure.

They would be given warning “but if they still ignore it, they could face a fine of RM100,” he said.

“If they persist, we will lodge a report with the state Health Department to shut the place down,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Several people who have come across such situations said people should look out for signs of bite marks on the straws to make sure that they were not “recycled”.

It is learnt that some restaurant workers would even resort to cutting off the tips of straws and reuse them again

Communication manager Josey Wong, 35, said she found bite marks on her straw while having her meal at a popular food outlet.

“I asked a waiter about it and he admitted that the restaurant would recycle drinking straws.

“This is unhygienic as some people use the straw to pick their teeth,” she said.

Sales executive Adeline Goh, 27, also faced a similar situation when she was dining at a seafood restaurant in Butterworth.

“The tip of the drinking straw was flattened after being bitten by someone else.

“I confronted the waiter and he just replaced it with a new one. It was just so disgusting,” she said.

Ong said those who come across such cases should call the council hotline at 04-2637637.
I cannot understand how anyone can resort to such contemptible, detestable and unhygienice acts that put our health at risk just to save a few cents!!! The profit margin for a cold drink in a coffee shop is very high. Is it necessary then to stoop to such a loathsome and disgusting act?

Don't they realize that all kinds of diseases can be spread this way??

Eeeeeeew! I am so grossed out! Thank goodness I still look at the straws before I use them.

Those who operate restaurants, coffee shops etc. have a moral responsibility to maintain good standards of hygiene in order not to put the health of their customers at risk. The profit motive MUST NOT blind them to other more important values and responsibilities. They MUST educated their workers and ensure that utensils, crockery and cutlery are cleaned properly and food/drinks are prepared hygienically.

If you ever encounter such a scenario, please take a photograph of the evidence and call the council hotline at 04-2637637. The culprits must not get away with such disgusting acts!

This is definitely one type of recycling that we do not need and which MUST NOT BE PRACTISED AT ALL!!

Justice I am not at all surprised!

Look, many of our ministers and deputy ministers are recycled politicians, too!

More sadly, some are already being "rejected" by the rakyat, and some are "expired politicians"!

Should we encounter such a scenario in total silence???

KoSong Cafe Problem with eating out is that we cannot guarantee anything is up to the standards we expect.

From the meat (just died chickens for eg.), vegetables (not properly washed off insecticides or manure), expired canned stuffs, and so on, we are left to the mercy of the restaurateurs who are out for a quick buck. Of course, fresh and good quality produce can be spotted by the taste, but sometimes, it is too late by the time we have eaten.

We do have unscrupulous business people who would not hesitate to take advantage of 'opportunities' to make more money without ever considering the consequences to the consumers. Some could be harmless eg. diluting washing liquid and re-packaging them to make more, but it is still cheating.

So, for those who are really particular, they would even make their own breads, grow their own vegetables and make their own soya drinks! This is more towards self-preservation I guess.

Next time we see rich people, we should check their backgrounds to see if they made money through honest means!

You have made a very pertinent point! There is too much recycling of the other sort which we certainly do not need. We must make a stand that we only want men and women of honor to serve the nation!

Take care and have a great weekend!

    Cheers

Many thanks for that wise input. It is certainly most disheartening to know that there are many unscrupulous people in the world who have no qualms about making a quick buck at the expense of the health of others.

For some, they have no choice but to eat out, especially university students like my son. Not only do they lose out in terms of vitamins and nutrition, they are at the mercy of the many mercenary restaurateurs.

There should be stricter enforcement by health officials to deter such people from making a tidy sum in this manner.

Take care and have a good weekend!

    Warmest wishes

For some, they have no choice e.g. varsity students, those who are living on their own in rented rooms/shared apartments etc. or those hard pressed for time.

For me, I am always very careful about where I eat and always look at the state of the kitchen, the fingernails of the hawker, toilet conditions and other indicators.

Health is wealth and we cannot take any chances...

Take care and God bless you!

    Cheers
