SPECIALLY FOR ALL WORLD CUP FANS

I confess - I am also a football fan and like many of you out there, I will probably be in a zombie-like state between 11th June and 11th July 2010. Blogging will continue as usual :-). When my husband was courting me in the late 1970's, guess where we had our dates. :-) Weekends were usually spent at the Penang City Stadium together with the other guys from church. There was one other girl with me then who is a mother of three young adults today. Those were glorious days for Malaysian football when we had Mokhtar Dahari, Soh Chin Aun, James Wong (oh I had such a crush on him!!!!), Isa Bakar, Santokh Singh, A.Arumugam, Reduan Abdullah and Shukor Salleh!!! Malaysian football is just not the same any more. As such, it is wonderful that we can enjoy world class football for one whole month!!!

So for those of you who are World Cup fans, please ensure that you have already negotiated with your spouses and kids wrt the television :-). Do make special effort to protect/hide the remote control which is a very important gadget in between breaks.

Do spell out the ground rules to the kids - they are NOT to walk in front of the television during any World Cup live telecast. It is likely that during a live telecast, we will terminate other activities such as:

* answering the phone
* attending to the kids' homework
* opening the door
* any non-football related activities will be ignored during any World Cup live telecast of matches unless there are some extraordinary events e.g. a visit from an alien, or a spaceship landed in the garden or the current status quo steps down for PR to take over :-)

In short, the world comes to a stop during all World Cup live telecast of matches - only the television screen is of primary importance.

All food, drinks, snacks that have been placed in the sitting room are for consumption during the matches!

Do give your loved ones forewarning that during this period, your lungs may suddenly become very powerful and that you are prone to shouting "GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL" at the top of your voice and will not be responsible if the crystal or windows shatter! This is the time to encourage your loved ones to put on their headphones and to listen to their iPods :-).

At the same time, warn them before hand that there may be times when you may groan in agony and it is not due to any pre-existing medical condition but because of disappointment or despair at a particular move of your favorite team or the opposing team. Remember to advise them to leave you alone if your favorite team loses :-) because it takes time to get over such painful experiences.

Make it clear that anyone can sit with you to watch the matches BUT they must not expect you to explain the rules of the game or to clarify who is the better player or what happened or to explain fouls etc..

Patiently, you may have to explain to your friends and loved ones that you also need to listen to the commentary and other World Cup program highlights so they must not talk to you when you are concentrating on these programs.

Displays of affection, whispering "I love you" etc will be suspended during the matches! Otherwise you will personally give them a yellow card!

Of course, if they need you to run an errand during a live telecast, they can dream on like Azhar. As such, it would be good if you gave them a copy of the schedule so that they are aware of the times when you are unavailable.

Remind them that these house rules do not apply once in four years when the World Cup Fever is on but are also applicable during the EPL fever, Euro Cup and so on.

So to all my dear readers out there, enjoy this World Cup season!!! Yahoooooo!!! Don't forget that @ 9.30p.m. tonight, it is ARGENTINA vs NIGERIA. Tonight, Diego Maradona will make his debut as Argentinan coach in the tournament. Of course, he hopesto lead La Albiceleste to victory over a Nigeria side. I am not sure if it is going to be that easy. The official Fifa World Cup site says:

The former world champion has promised an attacking line-up, possibly with Lionel Messi operating just behind a front pairing of Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain. Maradona is likely to opt for three at the back, with Martin Demichelis and Gabriel Heinze flanking the vastly experienced Walter Samuel. Highly fancied to go far this time round due to their immense goal-scoring potential, La Albiceleste will now need to confirm that potential on the pitch.

In the opposing camp, Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback, though deprived of one of his driving forces, the injured John Obi Mikel, has made it clear that his team are not in South Africa to simply make up the numbers. Nigeria have lost to Argentina at the FIFA World Cup twice before, in 1994 (1-2) and in 2002 (0-1). Nigeria fans, however, will hope that on their own continent they will constitute an altogether different prospect.

For sure, it will be an exciting match tonight!!!! Make sure you have an early dinner and that you are seated in front of the tv before 9.30p.m. Pray hard that there are no power failures!!! Enjoy the game!

Do leave a comment to share your thoughts/hopes and dreams about your favorite team!!! Take care and enjoy this World Cup Season!!!

    Masterwordsmith Dear Anak Melayu

Very true. I surmise it is due to a host of reasons ranging from materialism, change in value system, commercialization of sports, loss of true sporting spirit, self-glorification and many other factors. And now, we can just look back and reflect on the days gone by and be horrified about what we read with each passing day!

Yes, things were somewhat better in the past.

I still remember that during those football matches at the stadium, there was an Indian gentleman with the big rattan basket who sold curry puffs served with pickled onions. Absolutely delicious!

Take care and do enjoy the football season. I am not enjoying the Argentina vs Nigeria match at the moment. :-(.

romerz Humbug! My favorite team won tonight but just cost me a couple of beers with my friends because of the handicap!

    Guess which team.

  1. says:

    Unknown Hi Romerz

With a handicap - that means you are rooting for England! I missed the match because of my antihistamine. England is a favorite in that group. Guess which one is my fav team!

  1. says:

romerz Wrong Paula and thank goodness you are not working for the MACC or PDRM. :-)

Check the time of my post which was before the England match. Also note the clue "won today".

My favorite team is Argentina and England ranks amongst my least liked teams. :-)

Your team? Hmmmm .... any clues?

  1. says:

Unknown Haha! Romerz, I really did not see the time of your previous comment and fell for the handicap cos I thought you would root for England as you studied there haha!

Hint: I will have to wait till 15th of June to see my favorite team :-). Pretty clear!

I actually thought Nigeria might give Argentina a run for their money because of some of their players. Still, Enyeama saved a couple of goals while Argentina lost out on a few scoring chances!

Still, I think this time Argentina has better chances than in 2002 where it did not make it past the first round. Years ago, I used to support Argentina i.e. when Maradona was playing haha! But now, Maradona is getting the headlines for the wrong reason wrt his promise to be in his birthday suit should Argentina win!!!

So who do you think are the possible quarter-finalists? I know it is a bit premature to ask this question...

    Enjoy this football season!

    Cheers

  1. says:

romerz OMG not Brazil, Argentina's arch enemy?

Let me sound-off my reasoning why I said Brazil with you to see if I can be a sleuth with MACC.

0n 15th, 6 teams play. They are Brazil, Portugal, NZ, Ivory Coast, Slovakia and N Korea.

In your post you mentioned that you have been following football since the 70s. Then teams like NZ, Ivory Coast and N Korea were teams you would ask - who? And Slovakia did not even exist as a nation!

So the choice boils down to Brazil and Portugal. Portugal's golden era did not start until the early 90s so I'm guessing it is Brazil.

Do I make the grade to work for MACC?

  1. says:

    Unknown Dear Romerz

LOL!!! Sorry lah...From the 1960's, I have been a Brazil fan :-) thanks to my dad's influence. I still think Pele is the greatest footballer of all time and that Brazilian footballers play with the style and gusto that few can compare as a whole team.

I do admire Argentinan players such as Lionel Messi and of course the good old days when Maradona ruled the field. The fact that Messi is only 22 yrs of age spells much hope for the Argentinan team.

We have yet to see the Brazilian side play so anything can happen.

In the past, I have supported Argentina, Germany (during the days of Beckenbauer), England (during the George Best era) and to a limited extent South Korea.

Haha! Are you sure you want to work for MACC???

    Enjoy the football season!

    Cheers
