Think For A Moment...

A doctor entered the hospital in hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery. He answered the call as soon aspossible, changed his clothes and went directly to the surgery block. He found the boy’s father going and coming in the hall waiting for the doctor. Once seeing him, the dad yelled, “Why did you take all this time to come? Don’t you know that my son’s life is in danger? Don’t you have the sense of responsibility?”

The doctor smiled and said, “I am sorry, I wasn’t in the hospital and I came the fastest I could after receiving the call…… And now, I wish you’d calm down so that I can do my work.”

“Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would you calm down? If your own son dies now what will you do??” said the father angrily

The doctor smiled again and replied: “I will say what Job said in the Holy Book “From dust we came and to dust we return, blessed be the name of God”. Doctors cannot prolong lives. Go and intercede for your son, we will do our best by God’s grace.”

“Giving advice when we’re not concerned is so easy,” murmured the father.

The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy.

“Thank goodness! Your son is saved!” And without waiting for the father’s reply he carried on his way running. “If you have any question, ask the nurse!!”

“Why is he so arrogant? He couldn’t wait some minutes so that I ask about my son’s state” commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left.

The nurse answered, tears coming down her face: “His son died yesterday in a road accident, he was in the burial when we called him for your son’s surgery. And now that he saved your son’s life, he left running to finish his son’s burial.”

NEVER JUDGE ANYONE BECAUSE You never know how their life is or as to what is happening or what they’re going through. Just think ABOUT this moment.

walla Both the parent and the doctor acted their respective ways in keeping with their respective concerns; the parent for his child, the doctor for his patient. However in this story, the doctor had to overcome one additional hurdle, his own tragedy. For him, it was a test of life in a way higher than the test of life faced by the parent. Higher because he had to subsume his own grief to prevent another for someone else who only thought of berating him without knowing the real circumstance.

Such is the gravelly grittiness of life. We each face our own tests of life. From the counter clerk to the chief executive officer. From the road sweeper to the plane pilot. No one escapes the dance of fate, the tragic pathos of an event whose time has come.

    This blog pulls heart-strings.

adie From a Human Factor point of view, I would worry putting my son's life in his hands.. he's in grief and no way a normal human can concentrate and perform. He shouldn't be called in to work..

Thank you so much for such a sentimental and moving response. You have considered not just the aspects of this post but also the broader dimensions beyond this story to remind us that it is difficult to be human and humane for we are at the mercy of fate, destiny and time.

Take care and God bless you always!!!

    Warmest wishes

Thank you for a very realistic and sensible comment! It is quite true that given the circumstances, the hospital should have considered calling in someone else. Yet, the fact that he came in and put others above his grief speaks volumes about his commitment to the Hippocratic Oath.

At the same time, this story also teaches us that there are so many angles to consider in any given circumstance and that we should really think before we act.

Take care and once again, thank you for such a spontaneous and practical response.

Do keep in touch! Have a nice day!

    Best wishes
