The End of Modern Medicine?

Many of my relatives are either in the medical line or in the pharmaceutical industry. As such, a significant number of them are/were too familiar with medicines - both the original and other generic brands. I am not exaggerating when I say that one could not cough or sneeze or clear the throat peacefully without another relative saying:

*Do you have a cough? Take etc etc.
*Do you have a cold? Take an antihistamine etc etc
*Do you have a fever?
*Is your phlegm yellow? Take antibiotics etc etc.

Quite a number of them became pill poppers - ever ready to take antibiotics. In fact, another friend was in a similar position when she was in primary school and devoured tons of antibiotics to the extent that her teeth were all in an awful shade of grey - the result of taking too many antibiotics.

During my recent illness, I stayed away from antibiotics and only took two courses - the first one was a mild one and the last one was prescribed by the ENT specialist and cost me 80RM for 14 tablets.

I firmly believe that one should not consume too many antibiotics because of many reasons.

Today, Katie Moisse wrote an article for ABC News on how antibiotic resistance could bring an end to modern medicine. In that article, she said:

As bacteria evolve to evade antibiotics, common infections could become deadly, according to Dr. Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organization.

Speaking at a conference in Copenhagen, Chan said antibiotic resistance could bring about "the end of modern medicine as we know it."

"We are losing our first-line antimicrobials," she said Wednesday in her keynote address at the conference on combating antimicrobial resistance. "Replacement treatments are more costly, more toxic, need much longer durations of treatment, and may require treatment in intensive care units."

Starmandala Christian Scientists have long held that physical sickness has its roots in emotional and spiritual imbalance. That's why they view the issue of health as finding ways to regain one's wholeness (or holiness).

There are instances, of course, when the amazing advances allopathic medicine has achieved deserve to be acknowledged and applauded. When, for instance, surgeons successfully stitch a severed limb back, reconnecting even delicate neural networks with microsurgery, enabling the injured person a fair chance of regaining the use of a hand or a leg.

I envisage the increasing use of much subtler methods of healing that operate beyond the merely physical. For example, color and sound therapy which work on the cellular, sub-cellular levels, as well as the electromagnetic field.

The only obstacle that prevents these advanced methods of healing from becoming universally practiced is greed - particularly the greed of the pharmaceutical giants that view the doctor's role as that of a local promoter and dispenser of their pricey products.
