LKY's Red Box

The red box - a briefcase which held what Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was working on at any time - was testament to his commitment to Singapore, wrote Education Minister Heng Swee Keat on Tuesday (Mar 24).

“When he noticed something wrong, like an ailing raintree, a note in the red box would follow,” said Mr Heng in an essay posted on Facebook. Mr Heng was Mr Lee’s Principal Private Secretary (PPS) from 1997 to 2000 - when Mr Lee was Singapore's Senior Minister.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia at a tribute site in Tampines, Mr Heng added: "What saddens me is that the red box can no longer have his daily routine but I trust that the box, the spirit behind the way that Mr Lee worked, will live on."
