CORRUPT LEADERS CORRUPT THE NATION

Posted by Unknown On Saturday, January 23, 2010 37 comments
Our country has many aspiring political leaders but how many display admirable leadership ideals? Many political leaders seem to severely lack some of the most important leadership qualities, such as integrity and accountability. To many people, the label “politician” has such negative connotations! All is not lost as there are still a few who come close to the leadership ideals and who are good examples of an effective political leader.

For a nation to progress, we need political leaders who through good governance can legitimately assess and determine the distribution of power and resources in ways that can positively impact the well-being of a nation and its people.

A good leader considers the long-term good of a country, above and ahead of any personal short-term gains. Malaysia needs leaders with charisma and integrity, analytical abilities to assess a situation and the ability to make sound decisions. Leaders must not use tax payers' money for enhancement of self-image or national program. Tax payers MUST object when this happens!

Is it a tall order that leaders display ‘statesmanship’ and demonstrate sincerity, humility and integrity, even if it means admitting faults to show their remorse or by resigning to maintain honor for misdeeds or losing an election? We can only dream on.

Upright leaders have no problems demonstrating integrity and loyalty to all always. Consequently, they can resist the various temptations of the political arena. Communication and inter-personal skills must be evident to achieve the greatest good for the general population and not that of their collaborators!

A leader who is not corrupt is willing to listen to the needs of the common people and to represent them faithfully. Courageously, they can stand up and say what needs to be said – rather than just tell the general public what it wants to hear. Fine leaders are willing to make difficult (and possibly unpopular) decisions for the greater good.

Good leadership builds harmony and unity by being fair to all regardless.

Contrastingly, useless and hopeless leaders are like bandits who use manipulation or corruption instead of inspiration and motivation to get what they want. Corrupt leaders run away from situations or the consequences of their misguided actions. Such leaders, instead, prefer to point their dirty fingers at everyone else. They seldom accept responsibility for their mistakes, admit their political failures and acknowledge their own contribution to a problem!!!

In any situation, accountability is crucial to effective leadership, without which followers will have no respect for them. A good political leader is honest and responsible for their own actions and decisions and is willing to admit when they have made a mistake. They will focus their on representing the people rather than spewing lies and criticizing or condemning others.

The effectiveness of his leadership is assessed via public opinion. He can laud and claim how good he is and how much good he has done for the nation but at the end of the day, it is the people's verdict. Yet, many choose to live in denial and enjoy strutting around in a delusional state because of self-serving tendencies.

Many forget that leaders are not static entities locked within a vacuum. Leaders come and go except many don't know when to go! Worse still, they fight tooth and nail to cling on to their position. It is a reciprocal relationship. He exists in a leader-and- followers scenario. He can only lead if people allow him to lead and will follow his bidding. If he receives a lot of flak, it is testimony of his failed leadership or statesmanship. However, the truth of this statement depends on the thickness of their facial epidermis for a few ignore reality and continue their charade and nonsensical rants! They ignore public perception at their own peril!

Expectations of leadership have not changed over time as many still uphold ideals such as honesty, vision, ability to inspire, and competency. Thus, true and effective leaders are the ones who can meet the people's needs and dreams, not their own.

However, a nation of corrupt leaders corrupts itself absolutely. If leaders don't display high standards of integrity and accountability, many can become corrupt. Ultimately, everyone's pocket $$$ will be affected!

If corrupt leaders with no integrity can remain in power, it is testimony to the world that the nation condones wrongdoing at the highest levels.

No thanks to these leaders, our international repute will suffer. A Catch-22 situation emerges when a corrupt populace produce corrupt leaders.

Democracy allows us to choose the best leaders who can lead and guide the people to honor, integrity, principles and high moral standards.

Choose wisely. Make THE RIGHT CHOICE and DO NOT condone any form of corrupt, incapable and insincere leaders!

Must an engineer or scientist invent some device that detect the fault line of the connotation.?

    Good morning to you!

Thank you for a very supportive and inspiring comment.

I am old already and may not have many years left on this earth. Before I depart, I want to try my best to be part of that mission to realize our vision for a better Malaysia.

Hopefully, this will happen soon...then I can 'expire' peacefully...Until then, it is me unplugged in this space even though some may wonder why I keep writing...

So much to do, so little time..for a nation we love called Malaysia.

Take care and keep up the good fight.

    Have a nice day!

    Anonymous Um ... Denim Girl,

Since the topic is "Corrupt Leaders", do you know that Danny Law is related to Lim Guan Eng?

Turns out that Danny Law is a cousin to Lim Guan Eng's wife, Betty Chew.

The subject of "Corruption" should include matters much more than mere dollars and cents.

It should also includes moral corruption, cognitive corruption and other forms of corruptions.

It is time we need to voice out against those leaders who are corrupted, financially, morally or in whatever form.

That is news to me! Thanks for the enlightenment!

I agree with you re the issues related to corruption and did mention it in my post...

Agree! We must voice out our discontent against this vilest form of social disease inflicting our nation. More must write or call up their aduns or MPs or write in to newspapers, online portals, blogs etc.

NGOs must organize peaceful awareness-raising forums where moral citizens can teach us more as to how we can be mobilized to steer the country in the right direction..

You know what Denim Guy? If you are from Penang, you should do something...Come to the forum on Feb 5th. Three wonderful speakers will be speaking and you can raise these issues...

    Stay tuned for more updates.

Take care and have a nice day.

Ah - the February 5th thingy is spectacular. I have to wait for the official announcement to be released and then only announce it. Otherwise I will be stealing the organization's (note = not political party) thunder.

Believe me - you will be so thrilled to know who are going to be in Penang!!!

I am. See you there. Think the announcement will be made either today or tomorrow. Take care and stay tuned!

    nick Sis,

The thing is not so much that we have corrupt leaders that's corrupting the nation BUT is our people too corrupted or unmoral to have let this thing get this far? Are Malaysian too numbed or of the same species of these corrupt leaders that Malaysian (for decades) didn't do anything? Didn't even raise an eyebrow on the blatant corruption and destruction being perpetrated (especially during TDM rule)?

This is what have been puzzling me for half of my life (Malaysian voted for the corrupt and the tyrant for decades)! It defies logic because even though it's true that UMNO and BN controlled the media especially the MSM, the glaring injustice, graft and desecration of our constitution should have left an impression on a moral and humane heart. BUT for years now, after so many GE (of which I was always rooting for the opposition or in actuality hoping that the just will triumph against the corrupt in Malaysia only to be disappointed at the outcome) Malaysian still elected those who they knew are corrupt and dare I say it, evil. For me, the just and principled will never elect the corrupt no matter how good their promises sound or how much material and reward they give! Maybe I'm naive BUT I rather be naive than the alternative ( selling my principle to the highest bidder).

That's the reason for my melancholy. Seeing the destruction of this nation I'm reminded of our own participation in the destruction. Our own collusion with the corrupt in destroying this nation and what's worse we are in a calamity of our own creation. As long as our people still do not wake up to the fact that what's happening is in part our own fault and doing, blaming UMNO and BN and the leaders will not do much. Why, because if we still blame other people rather than ourselves, then we will still make the same mistake and make the wrong decision again (we will still let other corrupt leaders destroy our nation). The cycle will never end and that will be the greatest tragedy that can befall our nation and our people.

Let's have a moral, a principled and just society and I guarantee that no corrupt people will ever get the chance to be a leader, let alone elected to govern us. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE SHOULD BE OUR MORAL CATCH PHRASE AND AIM.

    Hamba.
It seem that my melancholy is deeply rooted therefore not easily dislodged BUT I'm ever hopeful.

stephen Hi MWS,good evening.I must say,2 to 3 posts a day and heavy topics again!! You are really a blogaholic!! So, how has the weekend been? The weather's been rather kind to us,nice cool breezes and pleasant evenings.Have to slow down on the food intake, cholesterol level is seriously bad,so I've started on medication- a sign of old age.My apologies,I'm seriously off topic, but I'm trying to post a comment everyday if possible to keep up with you!!
Have a great evening with the family!! They are our keel in rough seas and a safe harbour from stormy weather.God bless.

  1. says:

    jtba Dear MWS ,

Many in March '08 voted for DAP / PKR / PAS for a change .
I voted for a DAP guy for the Selangor State seat , and a PKR guy for MP seat.
I humbly opine that my ADUN has NOT walked the talk , and has failed the voters in many respects
and the MP has not been heard or seen after March ' 08.
9 out of 10 residents in my Section in PJ don't even know his name or what he looks like .

Many may also hold the view that DAP/PKR has conveniently FAILED to deliver their promise for Municipality elections .
How much faith can we place with such " opposition " to deliver all the things they now say they they want changed when they march to Putrajaya when they cannot even deliver their promise for Municipality elections ??
Their excuse has always been to give them more time , but make no apologies for their short deliveries . Where are their Principles ? A promise is a promise.

So , using your benchmark of selection of NOT voting for corrupt , incapable & insincere leaders , it appears that the DAP & PKR guys whom I had voted for now do NOT deserve my vote in the next elections .

I want a REAL change for the good of the People / Nation , and not just a change of politicains making empty political promises during elections .

I opine that the PR leaders have already taken us for granted for our desire for a change , and ignore core Principles and behaving like typical politicians.
They continue to do so at their own peril.....as they may soon come under the category of "incapable & insincere ".

6 Million Ringgit question.... who do I then vote using your benchmark of worthy Leaders ?
Or do we have to scrap the bottom of the barrel to vote for the " lesser of two evils "

    Sad .

    Salam.

    Unknown Dear Nick

What you painstakingly wrote is so true. In the 1980's and 1990's, so many were numb, apathetic and silent about corruption then because they were too comfortable. There was the economic boom and everything was sailing smoothly sans internet...

Perhaps people then were not as forward thinking as they are now thanks to net penetration.

People on high moral ground will never vote for corrupt leaders - I hope. Yet I know some civil service employees who would only vote for the status quo to preserve their jobs and to stay out of trouble. I am not sure about the extent of this scenario.

I know many who are unflinchingly loyal to the same side from Day 1 and I am one of them...

Do check out this post I put up in my other blog...it is in the same vein as your comment :-) and it is heartening to know we think alike on the same day on the same issue!!!

    Unknown Dear JTBA

Once again, many thanks for your insightful and honest comment.

Actually, I feel the same way as you do.

In fact, I just told a staff member of a PR party this evening that if they do not buck up, things are not going to be smooth sailing for them in the next GE, especially since they do not have the kind of cash or machinery that BN has. So what will happen?

I believe that it all boils down to organizational & planning abilities, leadership qualities, the use of archaic methods to reach out to the masses, complacency, lack of direction and unity, and a detachment of all sorts from the people.

In fact, I have planned a post on:

    a) what to do for the next GE re voters
    b) what PR needs to do to meet the rakyat's expectations (and an assessment of their failures)

ANd am also halfway through another post. Been very busy today which is why I have yet to put up a post today.

The 2008 tsunami was a fluke shot and PR was totally unprepared to govern. Also, the selection of some candidates was questionable in terms of abilities and qualities etc...and they have to pay the price of that decision as I doubt these candidates would be able to win again based on their track record or lack of it!

JTBA, you strike me as a very intelligent and pragmatic Malaysian. I seriously believe you can serve the rakyat. I asked another gentleman today to stand for elections even though he is not affiliated to any political party. I asked him to serve the country because he has a heart to serve the rakyat and does a lot of social work daily. Now this is the type of Malaysian that will make a good Adun or MP but unfortunately he is in his 60's.

Imagine - at that age, he is out in the field doing social work everyday and he gave me a good run down of what needs to be done at the grassroot level. He, like you and many others, is a Malaysian who has a heart for Malaysia and its anak-anak.

We cannot let this opportunity slip by. Go and tell your ADUN off. Tell your MP! They were elected to serve you and your constituency and if they are not performing, they have to be told...All of us have to play our part to keep them on their toes regardless of which party they come from....

It is a saddening situation but I believe good will triumph over evil!

Keep up the good fight and hold up your height, JTBA. You are one good Malaysian who has a lot to give!

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us here.

    God bless you and yours.

Have a restful evening and a great week ahead!

A Arthur One corruption is all corruption.

With 22 years of despotic rule by TDM he introduced into the Malaysian governance cronyism, patronage, insidious corruption and all the evils that goes against the grain of a civil society. His menace still lives on and what he leaves behind is a trail of destruction to the judiciary, the polis and the whole civil system.

In other civil countries just a whiff of a scandal a senior civil servant must resign and take responsibility. In Malaysia as long as you are with the BN there will be a massive cover-up and what they tossed to the wolves are only the small fries and the little shrimps while the shark will always get away to have another bite.

What Malaysia needs is a cataclysmic change - a total make-over of the present day government for to change the present crop of law makers is an impossible task.

Although one would acknowledge that governing a country is no small tasks good and competent men/women who stand their stead will always lead the country forward. But do we find any in our present crop of law makers.

Under the present PM, there is one always one national crisis after another and investigations and solutions will drag on until it is being overshadowed by another crisis. This is how they evade the most critical issues without really taking the devil by the horn.

The Tao mentioned it about 2000 years ago: "Governing a State is like frying a small fish" It gets easily burnt. We know that it is difficult to please all, but the ruling elite is playing to the gallery for a certain segment of the population in order to retain their power. And what they propounded upon is not fairness or equality. They are playing on the sentiments, emotions, religious and racial lines. This is absolutely dangerous as it will cause a serious rift to the society. It may perhaps take another 50 years to re-engineer to a just and equal society.

The evil legacy of TDM will continue to live on for another 20 years if we are lucky.

Rightpath Our nation needs more people like u & Nick. People who sincerely wants to see the nation prosper and boom. We all love the country and try to do our little bit to help it steer in the the right direction. Nick is correct about a great number of the rakyat possess this corrupt mentality. Many have succumbed to human greed coupled with the "fine" example shown by our "great leaders". I've lots of friends who sound so righteous during our tertiary education days, but choose to deviate from the right path after going into the real working life. Most of them succumb to greed, and this is what most of them commented: " Eh! friend, you are obsolete and too idealistic, and if you don't like the "culture" here, it would be better you leave". I was stunted, but I was fortunate to have a simple minded, but a wise dad, who work as a cashier in a bank, who vehemently advises his children to be honest, have integrity and dignity. He also stressed that we must try to live within our means, and don't "steal" from people to enrich yourself. That is why I'm still around to vote for a benevolent, fair and sincere government. Though my dream did not come through, but the GE12 has given me a slim hope. Now, I'm looking forward to the GE13 to do our nation a little favour; i.e. to help all Malaysian to realise a Government that is truly for the people; irrespective of race, creed or colour.

  1. says:

    Anonymous JTBA,

    You are not alone.

For many years my area was represented by a DAP fella, yes, the one with the nickname of "Jelutong Tiger", Karpal Singh.

Many people look up to him, as if he is a hero.

    We? We know better.

That guy never show his face, except before election.

After getting elected he disappear, went back to be a big lawyer, and forgot about us.

So one time we voted him out. Along with Lim Kit Siang.

We got so tired of empty promises from DAP that we kicked both of them out, not only out of our area, but out of the Dewan Rakyat.

It is not that we like UMNO / BN, we know that BN is corrupted, and our country is pokai because of BN.

But on the other hand, DAP is no good either.

    They only talk. Yes, talk.

Talk, talk, talk, but when it comes to doing something --- "Who are you?" the DAP people will ask the constituents.

So, no. I never support DAP.

When we accuse UMNO of nepotism, of cronyism, the same is true in DAP.

    Nepotism is ripe in DAP.

    Kit Siang and his son.

    Karpal Singh and his sons.

    Cronyism?

Kit Siang and son and relatives, like Danny Law.

    What's the difference?

When Anwar announced that Kit Siang's son would become Penang's CM, I cover my face.

    Oh no !

    And indeed, "Oh No !"

We kicked out Koh Tsu Koon, and we got what? Another Koh Tsu Koon !

And in some ways, this new "Koh Tsu Koon" is worse than the old one.

    Like Kampung Buah Pala.

    Like that "Tennis star match".

Like the broken promise of "Local council election".

And in so many ways, that guy never care about the people.

He only talk, talk, talk, never listen.

I mean, what can we do?

On one hand, it's the corrupted BN.

On the other hand, it's DAP that is not better.

I am lucky, I guess. I have properties abroad. I can move out any time.

    How about the others?

    What choice do they have?

No matter who they vote for, they got feces in return.

MPs and ADUNs have to remember WE elected them IN and we can also elect them OUT.

At the same time, I hope that more capable Malaysians will come to the forefront to stand for elections. If they do not have quality candidates, then we will also get mediocre half-past six assemblymen!

Unknown Dear Anonymous @ 10.44 am

As promised, I called two DAP MPs. One did not answer, presumably busy...but I did leave a message.

I had a long teleconversation with another DAP MP and voiced out the concerns that you mentioned and the MP cannot believe that such a statement could be expressed by a comrade.

According to the MP, DAP is aware of the many attacks against DAP and Pakatan in cyberspace and believe these come from genuine sources and alo cybertroopers. At the same time, the MP also clarified that Danny Law is NOT related to LGE as stated by another blog reader...

Whatever the case, I am escalating these comments in written form to DAP because I believe that we cannot give up on the Opposition.

If one side is bad and there remains a lesser evil...it is only logical to go for the latter rather than remain passive or silent. I am saying this because some of my friends are in this category but after much discussion with them, they now see the necessity to support Pakatan Rakyat, and I hope you will do. Let's look at the collective good of having an Opposition. No one is perfect and I am the least perfect one...

Together, let us move forward to change Malaysia for the better.

Once again, I would encourage you to address the issue with your MP.

Take care and have a good day.

Anonymous Reading most of your readers’ comments in this article, and your other articles, I can see that most, if not all your readers are not young uns. Most of them must have been pre-teens back in 1957; teenagers or young men or women during the ‘69 riots and matured adults during the Mahathir years. They must have seen with their eyes how, the once fearsome Asian tiger evolved into the horribly deformed, skinny and toothless animal that it has become today.

You spoke of corrupt leaders corrupting the country and you ask what kind of leadership qualities are needed to reform Malaysia. Over and above all the qualities that you so rightly espoused, we need leaders who are nation builders to consciously mold its people from being just clusters of backward racial communities into a united, hard working, disciplined and educated world-class Malaysian society.

Alas, when our nation’s forefathers took over the reins of government from the British, what they had in mind was NOT nation-building. All they wanted was independence. That's all. A united Malaysian society was never part of the political equation. All we had was an “Alliance” of different racial communities fighting over who gets what from the spoils of independence. And until today, that battle had never stopped.

If our country’s forefathers had been nation builders, this should have been the message to the nation on the day we became independent:

“Yesterday, we were a community of different races with different race-centric aspirations. Today, we are no longer of different races, but a society of mixed cultural and racial heritage. From today, we are no longer Malay, or Chinese, or Indian, or Iban, or Dayak, or Kadasan, or whatever. From today, we shall be called Malaysian and Malaysian only. Let us all come together not as an alliance but as one, to build our country into a united, disciplined and educated world-class Malaysian society where every man or woman shall enjoy equal rights to every opportunity available in this glorious land.”

None of them had the foresight or courage. And, deservedly, this is what we have become.

What a brilliantly profound comment you have shared here! My deepest appreciation to you for taking the time to mull over the topic and its relevance to Malaysians. You are right in profiling my readers in that majority of them are probably baby boomers like me who grew up in the 1960's and witnessed the transformation forward and backward as a nation. Perhaps that is why we feel more strongly about the current events than before because we have seen the rot setting in, the passivity and the compromises that trapped us so subtly that we are where we are today - without any national identity, the framework of a nation in black and white sans the heart because of a gross deficiency in courage, wisdom and foresight - only self-serving tendencies stemming from greed.

And so here we are - form with no substance...the shell of a nation.

Would you mind if I posted your comment in a post that I will be writing tomorrow? I will not include it unless I have your permission.

I have great admiration for your writing and thoughts and wonder if you blog...

Take care and once again, my appreciation to you for your thoughts and comments.

    God bless you.

    Warmest wishes

Anonymous I am late tonight as I'm packing my bags for a long business trip to Europe tomorrow. Won't be back for the Lunar New Year. Here's to wishing you, and your Malaysian readers of Chinese cultural heritage, a Wonderful Lunar New year.
