PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE - A brief perspective

Posted by Unknown On Friday, January 29, 2010 23 comments
Psychological warfare is a tactic involving the use of propaganda or similar methods to demoralize the enemy in an attempt to ensure victory, possibly without even having to use physical violence. New technologies such as the radio, television, and the internet have helped carve the face of modern psychological warfare, ever creating new ways to reach the opposition. As long as conflicts exist, expect new forms of psychological warfare to be formulated and implemented.

Historical Perspective

1. Biblical Times

Psychological warfare was used in the Old Testament in Judges when Gideon fought the Amalekites.

2. Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great of Macedon swayed the mindsets of the people who were expropriated in his campaigns. To prevent them from revolting, he left some men behind in each city to introduce Greek culture, control it and oppress dissident views as well as interbreed. Most successfully, he influenced loyalist and separatist opinions alike and changed the psyches of the occupied people to conform.

3. The Mongols

Mongols Pictures, Images and Photos

Without psychological warfare, the Mongols would never have conquered more territory in the 13th century than anyone else in human history. This was their SOP:

Before attacking a settlement, the Mongol general would demand tribute and submission to the Khan or otherwise threaten to attack. The Mongols would threaten a village with complete destruction should a single arrow be fired. Nations like Kiev and Khwarizm, refused to surrender. In a series of choreographed maneuvers, the cavalry slaughtered the enemy.

As seen in many movies, a few would be spared to take their tales of the encroaching horde to the next villages. This created an aura of insecurity with the resistance, eventually supplanting the will of the villagers ending in victory.

Genghis Khan used fire at night to create an illusion of numbers. He ordered each soldier to light three torches at dusk in order to deceive and intimidate enemy scouts. Tamerlane, built a pyramid of 90,000 human heads before the walls of Delhi, to convince them to surrender.

4. World War II

Most of the events throughout history involving psychological warfare utilized tactics that instilled fear or a sense of awe towards the enemy. In the 20th century, advances in communications technology acted as a catalyst for mass propagandizing.

a) Adolf Hitler was one of the first leaders to relentlessly gain fanatical support through the use of technology. Most intelligently, Hitler used resonating projections of his orations through a microphone to exaggerate his presence to make him seem almost god-like.

This was a form of psychological warfare, because the image that he created for himself greatly influenced and swayed the German people to eventually follow him to what would ultimately become their own destruction. Sir Winston Churchill made similar use of radio for propaganda from the Allied side.

b) The American military in the invasion of Normandy displayed a fusion of psychological warfare with military deception. Before "D-Day," "Operation Quicksilver" created a fictional "First United States Army Group" (FUSAG) commanded by General George S. Patton that supposedly would invade France at the Pas-de-Calais. American troops used false signals, decoy installations, and phony equipment to deceive German observation aircraft and radio intercept operators.

America also used psychological warfare with some success in Japan during the same war. The Lemay bombing leaflets over Japan at the end of WWII was a major move by American forces. These documents, containing propaganda in Japanese, fostered distrust of Japanese leaders and encouraged the surrender of Japanese forces.

c) Radio personalities such as Lord Haw-Haw, Axis Sally, Tokyo Rose, Seoul City Sue and Hanoi Hannah also used propaganda for their respective causes.

d) The Cold War raised psychological techniques to a high art and merged them with economic warfare, "character assassination," and brainwashing. Techniques used include:

  • Broadcasting of white noise to convince eavesdroppers that encryption was in use, and to waste vast sums of time and money trying to decrypt it.
  • Recruiting particularly innocent-appearing individuals to be spies or saboteurs so that, when revealed or captured, doubt would be cast on many more individuals.
  • Various methods to ensure that any captured agent implicated as many innocent others as possible, for instance, maximizing the number of questionable contacts.
e) Information age

In the 1980s, the Information Age provided the potential to extend psychological warfare throughout all civilian activities. Growing exponentially through the rise of radio, television, and finally manifesting itself on the Internet, the power of those who framed facts about the world steadily grew during the postwar period.

According to Daniel Lerner in Psychological Warfare Against Nazi Germany: The Sykewar Campaign, D-Day to VE-Day, psychological warfare operations can be divided into three categories:

  1. White [Omissions + Emphasis] - Truthful and not strongly biased, where the source of information is acknowledged.
  2. Grey [Omissions + Emphasis + Racial/Ethnic/Religious Bias] - Largely truthful, containing no information that can be proven wrong; the source may or may not be hidden.
  3. Black [Commissions of falsification] - Intended to deceive the enemy.
Bear in mind that psychological warfare uses propaganda. Garth Jowett and Victoria O'Donnell defined propaganda as "the deliberate, systematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate cognition, and direct behavior to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist."

Propaganda appeals to emotion, not intellect. Propaganda was often used to influence opinions and beliefs on religious issues, particularly during the split between the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant churches.

Psychological Operations or PSYOP are planned operations to convey selected information and indicators to audiences to influence their emotions, motivations, objectives, reasoning and behavior. It entails learning about the enemy - their beliefs, likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses and vulnerabilities. Once they know these, they will begin the psychological warfare campaign which is a war of the mind!!!

Some of you may wonder why I read up so much to write on this topic. Well, firstly, I am quite fed up of the current scene and need to activate my brain by reading more. Secondly, I love to give myself little research projects like this to occupy my time :-) in the evening. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed surfing the net for the wealth of information available and believe this information is so vital for us to make sense of the nonsense around us. Do leave a comment about this topic if you wish. I would love to hear your views. Take care and have a blessed evening/day wherever you may be.

    nick Sis,

I think the question that exist in all of our mind (in my mind at least) is "Are we witnessing an actual and live psy warfare being engaged against our citizenry (with these recent incidents, incitement, controversies and illogical remarks/statements)?

Which begets the next BIG question, "Is something big and ominous being planned after the psywar?". If we look back into history, we can see a similar tension rising drama being staged just before "operasi lalang" (in which those who incite and create tension were not ISAed instead the oppositions leaders were incarcerated). Sounds ominous, isn't it?

    Hamba.
Sis, if you feel this comment will jeopardize your blog, pls keep it to yourself and don't post it. It's a question that's sneaked itself into my thought while reading your post...Worrying!

stephen Hi MWS, I remember reading a Carl Sagan book which describes the story of Adam living in paradise with nary a care or worry in the world until he decided to take the forbidden fruit. The forbidden fruit was the ability of being able to plan and look ahead, something which all other creatures don't have. While it gave man many benefits, it also made him despair and worry about the future. This was the suffering that God warned Adam about.

Psychological warfare harnesses this mental faculty of ours to think ahead to our disadvantage. It makes mincemeat of the weak and gullible and can make us lose hope and the will to soldier on.

We must always be on guard against this negativism and not throw in the towel.

What we must always tell ourselves is,whenever circumstances arise and we are faced with these mind games,we should know that the tormentor that we face is only mortal like us,of the same living flesh and blood. Therefore, thinking logically, he cannot have power or control over my thoughts as he is my equal.Only God can do that and he is not God.

Works for me.Have a great weekend GH (He!He!)

The answer is obvious, isn't it? Ada udang di sebalik batu as to why things happen.

Rest assured - the opposite side is NOT as dumb as some think them to be.

Some people pretend to be dumb when they are NOT.

Oh yes, things are definitely worrying.

My life is coming to an end soon...I dah tua and hope to make a difference in my small way and then when the time comes, I can close my eyes and go peacefully.

Just because we are old does not mean we are useless. As long as there is life in us, we should contribute as much as we can...

Take care, my friend and adik. Have a blessed weekend and a blessed life!

Wow! I need not sing Gordon Lightfoot's song to you haha...We are about the same age so I think you should know what I am referring to.

Thank you for your very meaningful and wise comment. I know you know I know :-). And I know you know I can :-). I cannot be more cryptic than that...

I love Carl Sagan's books and read it in my younger days....Must start collecting them. Think I borrowed them from the school and varsity library. In those days, I used my money to buy LPs and sadly, gave all my original LP and EP records away when the cassette industry hit the world. Otherwise, I would have made a lot if I could sell them now!! :-)

For sure, negativism is NO LONGER part of my life. That will never happen. What a relief I learnt my lesson and it is one which I will never forget.

Thanks so much for the wise and timely advice. Always a pleasure to learn from sincere friends.

I am so blessed by you and other readers...:-)

Have a lovely weekend and check out the next post for eeeer feeelthy pics and jokes LOL!!

Anonymous "All is fair in love and war" traces its origin back to John Lyly who was a Renaissance English poet and playwright.

Psychological warfare is as old as the hills. Consider the famous Sun Tzu

"One legend of Sun Tzu's life goes as follows: The king of Wu tested Sun Tzu's skills by commanding him to train a harem of 180 concubines into soldiers. Sun Tzu divided them into two companies, appointing the two concubines most favored by the king as the company commanders. When Sun Tzu first ordered the concubines to face right, they giggled. In response, Sun Tzu said that the general, in this case himself, was responsible for ensuring that soldiers understood the commands given to them. Then, he reiterated the command, and again the concubines giggled. Sun Tzu then ordered the execution of the king's two favored concubines, to the king's protests. He explained that if the general's soldiers understood their commands but did not obey, it was the fault of the officers. Sun Tzu also said that once a general was appointed, it was their duty to carry out their mission, even if the king protested. After both concubines were killed, new officers were chosen to replace them. Afterwards, both companies performed their maneuvers flawlessly."

"In the book, Sun Tzu uses language that may be unusual in a Western text on warfare and strategy. For example, the 11th chapter states that a leader must be "serene and inscrutable" and capable of comprehending "unfathomable plans". The text contains similar remarks that have confused Western readers. The meaning of such statements are clearer when interpreted in the context of Taoist thought and practice. Sun Tzu viewed the ideal general as an enlightened Taoist master, which has led to The Art of War being considered a prime example of Taoist strategy."

"The book is not only popular among military theorists, but it has also become increasingly popular among political leaders and those in business management. Despite its title, The Art of War addresses strategy in a broad fashion, touching upon public administration and planning. The text outlines theories of battle but also advocates diplomacy and cultivating relationships with other nations as essential to the health of a state."

"Communist Chinese leader Mao Zedong partially credited his victory over Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang in 1949 to The Art of War. The work strongly influenced Mao's writings about guerrilla warfare, which further influenced communist insurgencies around the world."

"The Department of the Army in the United States, through its Command and General Staff College, has directed all units to maintain libraries within their respective headquarters for the continuing education of personnel in the art of war. The Art of War is mentioned as an example of works to be maintained at each individual unit, and staff duty officers are obliged to prepare short papers for presentation to other officers on their readings."

"Sun Tzu's The Art of War is listed on the Marine Corps Professional Reading Program (formerly known as the Commandant's Reading List)."

"During the Persian Gulf War in the 1990s, both General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. and General Colin Powell practiced Sun Tzu's principles of deception, speed, and attacking the enemy's weakness."

"Mark McNeilly writes in Sun Tzu and the Art of Modern Warfare that a modern interpretation of Sun and his importance throughout Chinese history is critical in understanding China's push to becoming a superpower in the 21st century."

  1. says:

A Arthur Thank you for the great content article you have written giving your readers a brief perspective of wars since Biblical times.

During the civil war of China between KMT and CCP, Mao Zedong a fervent reader and follower of The Art of War, Outlaws of the Marsh and The Romance of the Three Kingdom, he used guerilla tactics to hit hard on KMT troops. A large population of Chinese were peasants and they were being exploited by Landlords. This formed the critical mass that MZD could leverage on and he used propaganda effectively to sway the people’s mind and heart. (Before the split of KMT and CCP, MZD was the Propaganda Director of the KMT in 1925)

His military geniuses were reflected in his single minded pursuit of a strategy to squeeze and control the country side and on gaining the hearts and minds of the peasants he finally attacked the big cities, with its decadent style of living under corrupt officials of the KMT.

The Long March was an example of the great propaganda machinery to galvanize the masses and this theme is still used occasionally today to glorify the struggles of the Communists.

In contrast to the Malayan Emergency, Chin Peng of MCP tried the same strategy. He attacked the rural plantation and tin miners and tried the same attack prong. But Chin Peng was up in arms with military geniuses like Sir Harold Briggs and Sir Gerald Templar.
The Briggs plan was to force the relocation of over 500,000 rural Malayans into New Villages to cut off supplies to the communists as well as to contain the psychological warfare.

Templar famously remarked that, “The answer to the uprising lies not in pouring more troops into the jungle but in the hearts and minds of the people.”

Now the political landscape in Malaysia has changed totally. BN lost its 2/3 majority and 5 States in the last election was due to a large number of factors but the major fatal flaw is that they don’t give enough weight and credence to the proliferation of information on the internet, which is beyond their boundaries and control. They are the incumbent, they control the MSM, they control the police, military and air force and the might of the whole government machinery is behind them, yet they lost out.

And one more important factor is BN always have an incompetent and a fool as the INFORMATION MINISTER, who does not realize that times have changed. Unlike Ghazali days, where our menace TDM had an iron grip on the whole country, our current PM does not have this luxury. He has better come up with more inclusive policies to engage the rakyat and he should come up with a better crop of ministers then the present ones. He also has better realized that he has a fool for the post of the Minister of Culture and Information.

And one more thing, reading the replies on some of the threads here makes me realize how low our education system has gone so sunk.

Cheerfulness is one thing, cheerfulness till the realm of wishful thinking, now ... that's dangerous !

PsyOp is more than what you and I can ever imagine. Every image on an ad (and I mean, a good ad) has some psyop ingredients with it.

For example: Ever wonder why pictures those female models with slight open lips?

It's a suggestion, for advertisement sells fantasy, and fantasy is a pair of gorgeous lips which is NOT tightly sealed.

Oh, and one more thing: Many of the best gurus in PysOps (yes, the official one sponsored by government agencies and military) came from the ad industry, believe it or not. :)

How are you? Have you had a good day? I hope so.

Where did you study? Perhaps you can share with us how your education has shaped your belief and stance today.

You are the first commenter I have had in the 19 months of my blogging who has insulted other readers' comments.

What makes you happy? Have you ever been really happy? You strike me as one who is in deep hardened bitterness.

Care to share your joys and what will make you happy in life?

Care to give a list of whom you deem as intellectuals? Perhaps you can let us know your TRUE identity and your academic qualifications so that we can pay you well deserved homage and enjoy your writings, inventions or works of art or music, assuming that you are extremely knowledgeable like my dear friend, Antares.

I am piqued as to the cause and motivation of your negativism and pessimism. It is MOST UNUSUAL for any human to be so depressingly pessimistic!!! I hope my dose of jokes for today and even in the past can cheer you. It is the least I can do to bring a smile to your face...:-)

A hardened diamond can be polished to be a thing of beauty and of worth :-).

I am sure you are a very nice person deep inside. Why not show us the other side of you? Surprise us for once!

What is your motivation then to infuse so much negativism here?

Is it a misdeed for me or any other human for that matter to be cheerful?

Is it unforgivable for me and other readers to admire Noam Chomsky?

I meant to ask you this many times.

What positive suggestions do you have to :

    a)make Malaysia a better place?
    b)improve standards of education
c)make people more effective in their lobbying
    d) make the world a better place to live in?

Since you are so learned, your views would definitely be one I want to know.

Each of us is an individual in our own right.

The sooner we learn to respect others the happier we will be.

Take care and here's wishing you a lifetime of love, joy, blessings, good cheer, abundant memorable moments to melt your heart and may your wife and descendants flood your life and heart with love and TRUE HAPPINESS!

VIjay Kumar Murugavell Closer to home , the effect of propaganda post 1999 has been reduced in potency, for propaganda to work effectively you must also silence dissenting views, after 1999 internet usage grew exponetially, thanks to lame MSM spin, these days many do not believe or are cynical by default mode.
The internet is a great eualizer, initially the ruling govt pooh poohed it, but after the trouncing on Mar 08 ,2008, they are desperately trying to make their presence felt to no avail, very simply because they dont understand that it is not just about the medium but content - case in point the clueless Utusan online, they publish the same drivel online as on the hardcopy. In China and Iran , the internet was considered such a threat that the governments there blocked twitter and facebook.Which reminds me of something I quated a while back

"Dear Parliamentarians of all stripes, while you debate the merits of your arguments and lambast your opponents,
    ... See More
please also spend more time tackling the issues that affect the nation, that is primarily the reason we voted you in.

This is no longer the 1970's , you can no longer skirt around the issues using political spin, some of us are jaded,
some of us are cynical, some of us are wiser but very few of us are going to fall for it, so please do not insult our intelligence.

Your actions, inaction and response to challenges have dire consequences for this beloved country that we all share.

If you cannot do this within reasonable limits, we the the citizens have no qualms about replacing you with those who can."
    VKM

  1. says:

Vijay Kumar Murugavell Indeed the propaganda has certainly been stepped up,
This is to be expected as polls show Najibs popularity is slipping from the high 65% levels therefore the MSM campaigns demonizing PKR & PAS.,,including the tired rethoric of malays and Islam under siege.
though the upper echelon may have engaged spinners like Apco, the UMNO warlords negate it by acting like proverbial 'bulls in a china shop'.
I warned of a new era of intelligent spin as early as May last year, it begun with Mathias Chang who I think had something to do with BN not contesting in Penanti,at the time many were speculating on the win margin by PR and many also said I over analyzed the situation, in the end I was proven right- it was subtle spin but if one looked closely one would be able to see through it.... A Arthur Hello Denim Guy

It is decent of MWS to publish your cynical comment as I would have thought that your comment does not merit or warrant any response. It is comparable to our former PM, TDM when he said that the bombing of the World Trade Center in NYC is done by USA agents themselves to provoke the country to go to war with Islamic fundamentalists in the Middle East, as they are capable of making such a high-tech film like Avatar. The US Embassy in KL chose not to respond to this type of uncivilized and indecent remarks from the former head of a country.

I would like to venture that you are an arm-chair critic who carries a whole burdensome of repressive emotions, perhaps a less than happy marriage, a failed career, a business on the verge of bankruptcy, a broken family or perhaps some severe financial strains that you see the world with myopic and cynical eyes. You envy the success of your fellow human beings and you unleash your angst by making sweeping statements to insult MWS and her readers without stating any facts or opinions. This is very destructive.

Your remarks “That guy objects for the sake of objection” fits you to a T.

I find MWS’s articles worth while reading and I learned a lot from her readers like Nick, Stephen, Peter, Semua-nya OK, Edward, Vijay and a number of anonymous commentators. Writing such comments take up time and research and if the articles or the writer (in this case MWS) failed to captivate us or to ‘enlighten’ us in a large measure then I am sure we have more worthwhile things to do or to read.

In today’s age of information we have to learn and re-learn but the most important thing to do is to UNLEARN. It simply means that you have to switch off all those bad habits you have acquired in the past, those failures which you would like to forget, those pessimistic beliefs which you have stubbornly clung onto and those hatred which you might have borne on those whom you think caused you to have such a cynical view of the world. These repressive emotions are very unhealthy and will eat you up slowly or quickly like Stage 4 cancerous cells.

Learning how to ‘unlearn’ is one of life’s toughest lessons. If you are a Buddhist read Tao or read Zen, if you are a Christian read more on Psalms, if you are a Hindu go learn Yoga, if you are a Muslims learn from some great Sufi masters or if you are anything at all go and read some motivational books. Or read all the above. That will make you a better man/woman.

This is the first time on all the blogs I read that I made such accusatory comment by conjecturing on your failed background but in the light of your abhorrent and destructive comment, I would like to state that you have your right to write but it must be within the frame of common decency and unwritten rules that each must give respect to the views that we aired though our opinions would differ.

BTW, do you have a blog? If you have please let me know for my interest is now piqued on whether you are as erudite as you think you are?

Salaam and peace be with you.
