ARE YOU STILL INDIFFERENT?

Posted by Unknown On Wednesday, February 24, 2010 86 comments
Much as I hate to admit it, one of the greatest enemies of Malaysians is indifference or apathy. I blogged about this in September 2009 in APA? TIDAK APA a.k.a. APATHY. I am not going to repeat what I wrote then but for this evening, I would like to share with you a speech by Elie Wiesel delivered on 12th April 1999 @ Washington D.C. which I extracted from THIS SITE.The audio is also available there if you wish to listen to the author presenting his speech on THE PERILS OF INDIFFERENCE.

I believe the time has come for Malaysians to search their hearts and to truly ask themselves what they hope to see in Malaysia. Are we being indifferent because we do not think the events do not affect us directly? That we are all happy and contented in our comfort zone? How wrong can we be if we remain in apathetic stupor. The situation is such that we cannot afford to be complacent or indifferent any more. We cannot lie to ourselves or our children when they ask us in the future, "Mom, Dad, why didn't you do anything to make a difference?" How will we answer them then? Think of how we are affected in every single area of our lives - education, finance, cost of living (almost anything and everything is more expensive while our pockets are getting lighter and wallets getting thinner). What about security issues with so many illegals that have disrupted our way of life and other areas? What about corruption, scandals, rising crime rates, health issues, racism etc? The list is simply endless.

At the same time, there are also different degrees of indifference. Some do not care at all. Some care, but quietly within their hearts. Some care but remain armchair critics without doing anything else but complain - whilst the indifference is to a lesser degree, we may not have stepped forward to do the work that is needed beyond mere rhetoric. I believe there is hope for Malaysians because more and more readers are voicing their discontent and need for change. The time has come for us to step forward and really effect change in clear and tangible ways. We have to.

Malaysians, let us ask ourselves honestly - ARE WE STILL INDIFFERENT? WE CANNOT AFFORD THIS LUXURY ANY MORE. Please rise and stand together with other like-minded Malaysians and work to effect change for our country. Be a volunteer. Persuade your friends to register as a voter and to go back to their hometowns to vote. Do not be cowered by fear or numbed to the nonsensical happenings that are increasing in scope and frequency. Volunteer to help a PR component party. Let us move FOR CHANGE.Let it begin with ourselves. TODAY.

This post is a follow-up to my post this morning called THE WIND OF CHANGE IS BLOWING. Please check it out if you have not read it, Thanks.

THE PERILS OF INDIFFERENCE by ELIE WIESEL

Mr. President, Mrs. Clinton, members of Congress, Ambassador Holbrooke, Excellencies, friends:

Fifty-four years ago to the day, a young Jewish boy from a small town in the Carpathian Mountains woke up, not far from Goethe's beloved Weimar, in a place of eternal infamy called Buchenwald. He was finally free, but there was no joy in his heart. He thought there never would be again. Liberated a day earlier by American soldiers, he remembers their rage at what they saw. And even if he lives to be a very old man, he will always be grateful to them for that rage, and also for their compassion. Though he did not understand their language, their eyes told him what he needed to know -- that they, too, would remember, and bear witness.

And now, I stand before you, Mr. President -- Commander-in-Chief of the army that freed me, and tens of thousands of others -- and I am filled with a profound and abiding gratitude to the American people. "Gratitude" is a word that I cherish. Gratitude is what defines the humanity of the human being. And I am grateful to you, Hillary, or Mrs. Clinton, for what you said, and for what you are doing for children in the world, for the homeless, for the victims of injustice, the victims of destiny and society. And I thank all of you for being here.

We are on the threshold of a new century, a new millennium. What will the legacy of this vanishing century be? How will it be remembered in the new millennium? Surely it will be judged, and judged severely, in both moral and metaphysical terms. These failures have cast a dark shadow over humanity: two World Wars, countless civil wars, the senseless chain of assassinations (Gandhi, the Kennedys, Martin Luther King, Sadat, Rabin), bloodbaths in Cambodia and Algeria, India and Pakistan, Ireland and Rwanda, Eritrea and Ethiopia, Sarajevo and Kosovo; the inhumanity in the gulag and the tragedy of Hiroshima. And, on a different level, of course, Auschwitz and Treblinka. So much violence; so much indifference.

What is indifference? Etymologically, the word means "no difference." A strange and unnatural state in which the lines blur between light and darkness, dusk and dawn, crime and punishment, cruelty and compassion, good and evil. What are its courses and inescapable consequences? Is it a philosophy? Is there a philosophy of indifference conceivable? Can one possibly view indifference as a virtue? Is it necessary at times to practice it simply to keep one's sanity, live normally, enjoy a fine meal and a glass of wine, as the world around us experiences harrowing upheavals?

Of course, indifference can be tempting -- more than that, seductive. It is so much easier to look away from victims. It is so much easier to avoid such rude interruptions to our work, our dreams, our hopes. It is, after all, awkward, troublesome, to be involved in another person's pain and despair. Yet, for the person who is indifferent, his or her neighbor are of no consequence. And, therefore, their lives are meaningless. Their hidden or even visible anguish is of no interest. Indifference reduces the Other to an abstraction.

Over there, behind the black gates of Auschwitz, the most tragic of all prisoners were the "Muselmanner," as they were called. Wrapped in their torn blankets, they would sit or lie on the ground, staring vacantly into space, unaware of who or where they were -- strangers to their surroundings. They no longer felt pain, hunger, thirst. They feared nothing. They felt nothing. They were dead and did not know it.

Rooted in our tradition, some of us felt that to be abandoned by humanity then was not the ultimate. We felt that to be abandoned by God was worse than to be punished by Him. Better an unjust God than an indifferent one. For us to be ignored by God was a harsher punishment than to be a victim of His anger. Man can live far from God -- not outside God. God is wherever we are. Even in suffering? Even in suffering.

In a way, to be indifferent to that suffering is what makes the human being inhuman. Indifference, after all, is more dangerous than anger and hatred. Anger can at times be creative. One writes a great poem, a great symphony. One does something special for the sake of humanity because one is angry at the injustice that one witnesses. But indifference is never creative. Even hatred at times may elicit a response. You fight it. You denounce it. You disarm it.

Indifference elicits no response. Indifference is not a response. Indifference is not a beginning; it is an end. And, therefore, indifference is always the friend of the enemy, for it benefits the aggressor -- never his victim, whose pain is magnified when he or she feels forgotten. The political prisoner in his cell, the hungry children, the homeless refugees -- not to respond to their plight, not to relieve their solitude by offering them a spark of hope is to exile them from human memory. And in denying their humanity, we betray our own.

Indifference, then, is not only a sin, it is a punishment.

And this is one of the most important lessons of this outgoing century's wide-ranging experiments in good and evil.

In the place that I come from, society was composed of three simple categories: the killers, the victims, and the bystanders. During the darkest of times, inside the ghettoes and death camps -- and I'm glad that Mrs. Clinton mentioned that we are now commemorating that event, that period, that we are now in the Days of Remembrance -- but then, we felt abandoned, forgotten. All of us did.

And our only miserable consolation was that we believed that Auschwitz and Treblinka were closely guarded secrets; that the leaders of the free world did not know what was going on behind those black gates and barbed wire; that they had no knowledge of the war against the Jews that Hitler's armies and their accomplices waged as part of the war against the Allies. If they knew, we thought, surely those leaders would have moved heaven and earth to intervene. They would have spoken out with great outrage and conviction. They would have bombed the railways leading to Birkenau, just the railways, just once.

And now we knew, we learned, we discovered that the Pentagon knew, the State Department knew. And the illustrious occupant of the White House then, who was a great leader -- and I say it with some anguish and pain, because, today is exactly 54 years marking his death -- Franklin Delano Roosevelt died on April the 12th, 1945. So he is very much present to me and to us. No doubt, he was a great leader. He mobilized the American people and the world, going into battle, bringing hundreds and thousands of valiant and brave soldiers in America to fight fascism, to fight dictatorship, to fight Hitler. And so many of the young people fell in battle. And, nevertheless, his image in Jewish history -- I must say it -- his image in Jewish history is flawed. Indeed it is so sad.

Many people still do not realize that each and every one of us, young or old, rich or poor is being affected at a very high level.

We cannot be indifferent any more!!

Justice Obviously, we cannot leave the mandate for change in Malaysia in the hands of politicians.
We cannot achieve a just and fair society just by stepping out once in several years to vote for leaders. Instead, we need to take part in shaping of Malaysian society.

Anonymous “The problem with us nowadays is that so many of us live behind a mask. Who we are is merely a projection of who we want others to perceive us to be. And for many, it’s become so very much a part of our lives that it has become exactly that : us”.

“…so many people are latent racists. It’s disheartening. I wish i knew a way how to tell them without hurting their feelings. We all need to unlearn these prejudices we’ve been socialised into”.

The above were extracted from comments by the late Markus Ng, a classmate/schoolmate of my daughter. It is so relevant to our society today and US in particular.

A preacher once said : Of all the spirits, doesn't matter how evil or bad they are, nothing compares to our human spirit. It cannot be caste out by any known power or by any name.

So, people, we are the our own greatest enemy. If we decide to be indifferent, how one can assist US until we decide that enough is enough ! Take on the role of a driver instead of being just the passenger for once for the sake of the future of this nation. Share your concerns and talk to those closes to you to usher in the wind of change and make a different.

When it is in the power of your hand to do so, do not withhold it till it is too late. The wise shall inherit glory. But shame shall be the legacy of fools.

    A Single Vote Ma'am,

Once a while it is good to know that we are not alone out there.

I was admitted to a private hospital recently and had to have some scans done. I noticed that the imaging machine was huge and that it was bolted to the floor. I commented about this fact and that this machine must cost millions, Nordin, the technician replied that it is secured so, so that I won't fall off it and not so that it won't get stolen like the jet engines. He was very sure no one would be able to get that thing out of the door, let alone the hospital. To back up his confidence he asked me to guess how many people it take to move that imaging machine an inch and whether by that time the whole place would be swarmed by the hospital security. With such confidence, I wondered if we should recommend the hospital security company to the RMAF. He said that he has lost his home state to 'penyamuns' and that he will make sure that that will be their last loot. He was very proud that he has managed to convince his whole department to share this same sentiment. Was he pleased to know that I was him, and with all conviction he shook my hand and I was really humbled when he begged me to help him in his cause to right the wrongs and to get all my friends and relatives too. And here I thought I was working alone out there, when my friend was doing it at risk of losing his job.

Then, it was the turn of the nurse accompanying me, she wanted me to guess how much that sole houdinni of the jet engine fame was paid for his confession and she said that it was a disgrace for her that he is someone of her race. Such disgust, I have not come across for a long time. She was agreeable to my logic of reserving and directing her anger and disgust at the thieves. "Don't worry, sir, all my family will never vote for those thieves, but we must work hard so they cannot win again or mampus whole Malaysia"

Somehow the hospital bill was not that painful for a change.

We are not alone, lets hold our heads up knowing there are many more out there, and that we will need to continue to give them the same moral support that we ourselves need from time to time.

Ma'am, thank you for doing a great job, keep it up, we need you even more now.

jtba Humbly opine that words alone do NOT counteract indifference .

Many believe prayers (alone) will be the solution to our Nation's ills. Many may even say THE correct way is thru' the ballot box.
I believe that all above work to only a limited degree .
God Helps those who help themselves , and , note the challenges of the electoral rolls/boundaries.

Believe that we need to change the inputs if we expect any changes in the output.

I advocate change thru' ACTION .
( not acts of violence )

MWS , Bloggers like you ACT by blogging , keeping the embers together to keep the fire alive .
Many do not realise the energy , time , money & other sacrifices just to do the good that you blog does. I salute your efforts .
Your efforts remain here.... perhaps we should take the
    " fight " to them.

I hope that we can all get together as a group to ACT on the
injustices , cruelties , corruption that are evident on both sides of the political divide .
The action that I advocate is to send emails, SMSes to the relevant politicians, leaders on any & every issues that are identified as being unfair and unjust .
Imagine the politicians receiving tens of thousand , or even better , hundreds of thousands of emails & SMSes very time they do something anything our Nation's interests.
This is a peaceful expression of democracy , and ,make them realise that there are enough M'sians who are against their actions .
This sure beats the hell out of demonstrating in the streets , being tear gassed and water canonned , thrown into jail , etc .
The politicians may be thick skinned but I am sure that it is no fun receiving 1000's of emails & SMSes telling them what scumbags they are .

I welcome more suggestions to take this to fruition .

    Salam .

Raymond If we want our country to improve, we must become constructive critics. We must demand for the best and responsible governance.

However, the price to pay for being critical is huge.

Everybody fears public persecution and does not want to be stigmatized.

Here, the possible become impossible e.g. submarines that should glide underwater easily cannot do what they were invented to do...

The impossible e.g. disppearing jet engines becomes possible.

:-) And why so, I wonder...:-(

Tragically, you are right. Worse still, the rest of us who voted otherwise, have to suffer because of those who did not vote and those who are in the opposite side of the divide.

Take care and keep the good fight.

I agree totally! I do not believe in hitting below the belt or the use of vulgarities or any comment that crosses the boundaries of decorum, propriety or values etc. Criticism must build and not break and we must try to be positive - otherwise there is a hefty price to pay.

Not only can there be a stigma once a hiccup happens, others could be atomized as well.

Sad and trying times we are living in....and may God deliver us and bless our nation.

Take care and god bless you and yours.

Hafiz b Shukor Tengku Razaleigh has predicted that Umno and BN will be voted out of power if concrete reforms are not introduced.

"Mark my words. If they don’t change in the next three years they are going to lose the next general elections."

Well, will they change? I doubt!

So, your guess is as good as mine.

    Sighs.

But we will still hope for the best!

    Ahoo Make concrete reforms?

    Yes, exactly.

1Malaysia needs to dump off policies and laws that are race and religion-based.

  1. says:

Very Sad To SUHAKAM officials, please be bold and courageous enough to act. You are there to safeguard the weak and the helpless, and not to be the mouth piece of the authority.

Please show some spunk or just declare yourselves as paid whores whose job is to whitewash the atrocities of the BN regime.

    Justice for Raja Azman!

For those of us who yearn for justice, it is never too late. We owe it to ourselves to find our hearts, our voices and to speak out from a heart that cares and not rot in indifference. The more things change for the worse, the more we have to work...Take care...There is strength in unity.

Take care and God bless you.

Exactly!! We need concrete reforms that put the people first regardless of color, creed and class.

Take care and may God continue to bless you with wisdom and the boldness to speak the truth.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Very Sad THE LOYAL WIFE

There was a man who had worked all of his life, had saved all of his money, and was a real miser when it came to his money.

Just before he died, he said to his wife, 'When I die, I want you to take all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to take my money to the 'after-life' with me.'

And so he got his wife to promise him with all of her heart that when he died, she would put all of the money in the casket with him.

Well, he died. He was stretched out in the casket, his wife was sitting there in black, and her friend was sitting next to her. When they finished the ceremony, just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said, 'Wait, just a minute!'

She had a box with her, she came over with the box and put it in the casket.

Then the undertakers locked the casket down, and they rolled it away.

Her friend said, 'I know you weren't fool enough to put all that money in there in the casket
    with your husband!'

The loyal wife replied, 'Listen, I can't go back on my word. I promised him that I was going
to put that money in that casket with him.'

'You mean to tell me you put that money in the casket with him!?'

'I sure did,' said the wife. 'I got all the money together, put it into my account and wrote him a cheque. If he can cash it, he can spend it.'

Moral of the story : Women are cleverer than Men!
