Why am I writing this? Well, the current events being reported in the media today are so absurd that I decided to blog on this topic with a more constructive focus, especially since there are some disconcerting trends that we see in reporting. I really did not feel up to blogging about the antics of some clowns in the circus of comedic tragedy, especially with so many re-runs of the same acts.
In a country like Malaysia, it is natural that differences exist in taste, opinion, attitude, ideology and political preferences. We can see that the plurality of our society in the diversity of our media.
Ideally, the media can play its role as a watchdog check against the tyranny of any authority that steps out of line. When authorities read the media, they might even realize that it is like a mirror which provides a continuous reality check of the situation that prevails. If it has any sense of social responsibility, the media can fulfil a constructive and socially responsible role of alerting authorities to situations that merit their attention. But is this happening in our country?
The media has a very important role in contributing to the creation of a modern, progressive, inclusive and dynamic society via fair and responsible reporting and criticisms. By doing so, they can strengthen democratic processes and empower citizens to make more informed decisions in life. Information and opinion featured in the media should be credible, balanced and well-researched - then only can we call it purposive and socially useful journalism. Do we have that in Malaysia?
People do have a right to know the truth and correct information. With so much power in its influence and its reach, it should indirectly help to control corruption by reporting any excesses and doing investigative reporting to expose any misdeed. Instead of an over-emphasis on gossip, glamor, sensationalized news, or scandals, the media should pay more attention to the problems of the rakyat. Above all else, all reporting should observe ethical values and prioritize the interests of the rakyat first, despite the many constraints. Can we have this in Malaysia?
The truth is that the media has a significant and indispensable place in our lives because it reveals timely news of today’s world which would otherwise be hidden from the common man. Responsible reporting of the truth can make citizens of a country come to the realization that they are being ruled by the wrong people – politicians who are only interested in their personal gains and not the welfare of their people. Ultimately, the media has to do some soul-searching to see if its motives are to the benefit of the nation and its people or itself and some groups.
In some countries, hard copy media are owned by political parties. Obviously, the editors know which side their bread is buttered. Under such circumstances, it might be difficult for staff to tread the middle path.
Is the present level of journalism presenting only half side of the picture or a distorted side in some cases? Could this be a cause of some problems? Is balanced reporting of any situation instead of selective reporting a tall order as well?
The principle of modern journalism can be understood from this saying:"When a dog bites a man it is no news, but when a man bites a dog, it is news". But how many of us want that type of news?
I surmise that the time has come when media personnel must remember their roots. Why did they decide to work in this industry? Whatever their motivation, they must observe, uphold and honor the Code of Ethics for journalists. Editors have to be vigilant and sincere in their decision-making and editorial policies so that we have nothing but the best in journalism standards.
But then again, as we look around us...
Sighs.
Look at the butterfly in the photo. Just as the butterfly needs time, effort to make clever decisions regarding the choice of flower for nectar, the media has to make timely and responsible decisions to suck out the nectar - the news worth reporting and offer it to us as a sacrifice of love to build a better society, a labour of love indeed for the country and not for money, status or fame.
I know...I am an idealistic dreamer....
Still, I hope that somewhere out there are editors, journalists and media staff who have a conscience, who love Malaysia and who have the courage to stand up for truth and justice to make a difference in our land....May the media in our country fulfil their social responsibilities and be a good corporate citizen and watchdog for the rakyat!
Please leave a comment to share your views/thoughts.Thanks! Have a lovely evening.

Apa Nama "When a dog bites a man it is no news, but when a man bites a dog, it is news."
Similarly :
When a BN frog hops into the PR camp, there is no news, but when a PR frog hops into the BN camp, it is great news!

Anonymous Racism predisposes towards elitism and elitism needs to stupify the masses to accept the benefactors.
There is no ethics in such "philosophy" besides a massive does of creepy borrowed cultural "morality" from the ME and Pakiland.

Many thanks for such a profound and penetrating comment. What you have said is really true. Ethics - rare and priceless...
Sighs. What a saddening thought...

Anonymous The need for media ethics rises as news reporting becomes driven more and more by the free market rather than the truth.

Thank you for your erudite comment. It is saddening to see how ethics are compromised when materialism supercedes all else, especially the truth...
Take care and have a restful evening.

Johan H Perhaps the odds of finding one paper anywhere that is truly fair and balanced is the same as the odds of finding a knowledgeable level headed person who has no preference for either side of the fence. In the west they have newspapers that lean liberal or conservative, so these papers fulfill their social responsibility towards their liberal or conservative audiences and of course their paymasters. Some try to please both but end up having the audience "brand" them as one or the other depending on what's routinely printed. The only diff with us is perhaps over there, each side is free to have as many papers as they can financially support.

Lovely to hear from yo again. Thank you very much for such a fair and elegant comment. It is sad to see the sharp contrast in the way media is run in various parts of the world. Do stay in touch and may God bless you and yours always.

ahoo Politicians/political nominees all over the world have bought into the media per se. They are churning out only news worthy of their masters bidding and anything else is not acceptable.
It was for that very reason that blogger news or alternative media or eMedai whatever we call it, survive. The political warlords are not interested in truth at all but the truth according to them. Thus, we have reporters that write news for survival sake not having an ounce of responsibility nor a gram of integrity.
I'd stop buying MSM paper long time ago and have no interest to offer them any space in my mind to be manipulated by them. You have dream and note that dreams are whisperes from the soul ! Cheers.

Justice The present age is one where philosophy is lost, and the people are confused and unable to see through the future!
