ABOUT TIME TOO!

When I read THIS ARTICLE, I was very happy that finally, there are Malaysians who will not stay away from applying for a job in the civil service or government bodies just because they think they might have lower chances of success in their job applications. According to The Star:

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s recruitment drive for more Chi-nese officers has received overwhelming response when more than 400 people turned up to apply for 40 vacancies.

....

“We are surprised because we only have 40 vacancies available for investigating officers and assistant investigating officers,” said an officer.

Application forms were quickly snapped up by aspiring job seekers who came from all over the country, with many saying that they were attracted by the salary and allowance perks which came up to RM3,500 monthly for an officer and RM2,600 monthly for an assistant officer.

Despite the briefing room being filled to the brim with applicants, many did not mind sweating it out as they stood along the crowded corridors and waited for more forms to be prepared.

Information technology graduate Jason Soo, 26, who came looking for better job prospects said he wanted to contribute to society by joining in the fight against corruption with the commission.

“Having more Chinese officers will ease the language barrier and help the commission solve more cases,” said Soo, who even managed to befriend fresh graduate Alvin Lee, 23, while waiting in the queue.

Hua Zong deputy secretary-general Dr Chin Yew Sin said the good response was heartening, adding that the association would consider having similar recruitment exercise for the police and army.

“This shows that the notion that the Chinese do not like working in the government service is wrong,” he said when met at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. CLICK HERE for more.

Personally, I believe that the recent TBH case made a difference to the number of Chinese wanting to work for MACC. Whatever the reasons for this pleasing news, it is time the staffing of government agencies or civil service or anywhere for that matter reflects the racial composition of our country. By right, meritocracy should rule but then again....this is Malaysia!

Wikipedia says:

Meritocracy is a system of a government or other organization wherein appointments are made and responsibilities assigned to individuals based upon demonstrated talent and ability (merit). In a meritocracy, society rewards those who show talent and competence as demonstrated by past actions or by competition. Evaluation systems, such as formal education, are closely linked to notions of meritocracy.

This is opposed to other value systems, where reward and legitimacy is based upon possession of wealth (plutocracy), origin (aristocracy), family connections (nepotism), property (oligarchy), friendship (cronyism), technical expertise (technocracy), seniority (gerontocracy), popularity (democracy) or other historical determinants of social position and political power.
I support meritocracy as a means by which individuals in society can attain social mobility via legitimate means in a fair and just manner. Singapore is a nation that practises meritocracy and look at their level of development compared to ours. When we do not allow ourselves to progress based on our talents and resources and instead rely on GIFTS and awards/rewards, it surely spells danger and such a scenario would be courting disaster on a long term basis because many would be retarding their self-development while justifying why freebies must continue at the expense of the collective good of the nation.

It is about time we rise and maximise what the Almighty has given us, to go against popular notion and to be more than who we are because we believe we can and will do so via legitimate and fair avenues.

And that is the way to grow...

But then again, this is Malaysia....so how?

Ex-MCA Man 400 people turned up to apply for 40 vacancies!
This clearly shows that the Chinese are keen to become government servants. The only problem is : they are not given the opportunities!

Chua Soi Lek, what say you?

There exist those who speaketh only when it is in the script for their 'prescribed' role.

Tragic, isn't it? We have to pay the price for their cameo roles!

    Darth Vader Dear MWS,

I am pleased to hear that they are hiring chinese officers.

But i have reservations about their perseverance and their ability to handle frustrations as their "superiors" will retard their findings in any investigations. Will MACC recognises officers ability based on merit and not skin colour? If not, what will these officers do? i think the answer is very obvious. They too will be subject to temptations.

Let me relate to you a true story. My uncle who served on RMAF as a fighter pilot many many years back, was also a "victim" of this discrimination. He was so frustrated that this country has such systems and he decided to call it quits and he move to Ozland. He then applied to RAAF and was immidiately promoted 2 ranks there. He just retired last year as 2nd in command of the air force base. Malaysia lost a talented figther pilot and commander.

These people are very short sighted and they didnt address the root cause of MACC current situation. MACC current situation is a "PUBLIC CONFIDENCE". The first thing MACC should do is to restore confidence of this body. I opine that in order to resotore confidence of the public, they should hire/loan high ranking officials from ICAC. But then again there will be people opposing this move. They will claim that Malaysia has sovereignty and the country problem should not be made known to "outsiders". My answer is very simple. If the whole of the Pee Am office "can be invaded" by Apco, why not MACC.

MACC must first be INDEPENDENT and free of political influences.

There must be a multi-prong strategy to combat corruption and at least start off with a high profile case such as the "corect, correct, correct" case.

This is my 1 sen worth of thinking and comments

ahoo Let the final results speak for itself. No need to issue statements of the soik sendiri kind. We need people with the right attitude for the right job. Not just any tom, dick or harry.

I concur with Darth Vader with regards to the RMAF thingy. My own "bil" and his close buddy were there too in the 80s'. After serving 21 years and seeing their juniors being promoted ahead of them over a period of no less than 5 years, they decided enough is enough. In fact their major encouraged them to leave and I end up having them with me since the late 90s'.

It is not just the MACC that has to open its door to people who are qualified, in fact all govt depts for that matter. We need meritocracy across the board in ensuring that professional are on board to ensure impartiality. Need I say more ???

Many thanks for your sincere sharing from your heart!

I hear you loud and clear and thank you for raising these salient points.

The loss to Malaysia is a plus benefit to Australia where your uncle is concerned. Indeed, we have to restore public confidence in many ways.

And you are right. The first step is to be free of interferences of any kind and to be independent and fair!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. You are definitely one Anak Bangsa Malaysia who has the interests of the nation in your heart.

Take care and have a great week!

    Cheers
