MALAYSIA'S 'FAVORITE' NEWSPAPER TOLD TO CHANGE ITS WAYS!

Hope seems to be shining brighter today! At least the dreamer in me hopes so :-). The Malaysian Insider reported HERE that:

Controversial Umno mouthpiece, Utusan Malaysia, must transform itself if it wishes to stay relevant, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.

The Malay-language daily pushes Umno’s agenda — often through racially-tinged articles against the party’s rivals — but Najib urged the 72-year-old newspaper to be more than just the party’s mouthpiece.

“I understand that sensational news sells... especially with that ‘one person,’” he said in a veiled reference to Utusan Malaysia’s constant attacks on Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“But you must also be a medium to build an intellectual culture, a critical society,” the Umno president added.

I applaud the PM's statement on this issue and the brave admission that Utusan is UMNO's mouthpiece, a Freudian slip perhaps?

At the same time, most humbly, I would suggest that the PM can direct his many subordinates in his department to identify:

* how it is to transform itself
* how it can make amends for its previous controversial reports
* how it should NOT make anymore racially-tinged reports
* how it should observe journalistic principles
* how it could have another look at its editorial policies/practices
* how it could practise objectivity in reporting without being UMNO's mouthpiece
* how it could bridge the racial divide in Malaysia and become a tool for creating racial harmony and nation-building
* how it should avoid sensationalizing news on that 'ONE person' as mentioned in that report
* how it can build an intellectual culture
* how it can develop a critical society

I am sure if firm guidelines (that go beyond this statement) were to come from the PM and his department, there can be a great difference in the harmony of our nation.

Decades ago as a student, I used to read Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian to improve my fluency in Bahasa Malaysia. I love the language and believe it or not, the first book I wrote in 1983 was not in English but in Bahasa Malaysia entitled "Buku Panduan Alam Sekitar" which was published in late 1983. And that is largely due to the exposure I had from UM and BH, not forgetting the many Malay novels I read such as my favorite Rantau Sepanjang Jalan (Datuk Haji Shahnon Ahmad), Merahnya Merah (Iwan Simatupang), Anak Bumi Tercinta (Fatimah Busu), Salina (A. Samad Said) and many cerpen (short stories) that I love by Fatimah Busu.

Honestly, I long and dream of a time when the MSM in our country is free, objective and can be a tool to develop mastery of the language and a nation-building tool.

Could this be the beginning of the realization of a dream or is it only window-dressing after the Sibu by-election?

Well, only time will tell. In the mean time, let's hope for the best and see the next development/announcement.

Anak Melayu Wow, your first book was written in Bahasa Malaysia!

Well, what about continue writing in BM? At least you can then confidently lambaste and bombard Utusan's Awang Selamat!

    Don't play, play!

  1. says:

    Unknown Dear Anak Melayu

I would love to continue writing in BM except the standard of BM is now very high. Even my younger son laughed at my book!!! LOL

I would not want to make a spectacle of myself. I am amazed at the development of BM over the last 20 years, even in literary works.

This is something that few have acknowledged.

So I really don't want to play play :-).

Take care and have a nice day!

Anonymous When Utusan Malaysia is mentioned, I always have one person in mind, and that is A S !

If you have been following A S's column in Utusan Malaysia, you will agree with me that this so-called journalist is nothing more than a mouth-piece of UMNO. Suffice to say, he is a xenophobic and a Malay supremacist.

    Anonymous Reform, reform, reform!
Sounds like a Malaysia Boleh slogan, hehe!

    nick Sis,

As always the so called "leader" of our nation is very vague or ambiguous in his call. I see it as double talk where he may sound as being/becoming liberal (intelligent, in some cases) in his views but in actuality he is emphasizing the exact opposite. He calls for Utusan Merapu to be transform into what, exactly? (he acknowledge UM as UMNO mouthpiece, for heaven sakes!!!).

From what I read in MI, he doesn't really ask Utusan Merapu to change it's insidious and malicious ways but merely state something about "continue to fight for its so-called agenda to protect the nation’s majority "race, Islam and country" while trying to be a medium of building an intellectual culture, critical society and stay relevant to the new millennium”. Now, isn't that just something totally contradictory and nonsensical?

Exactly how does UM be a medium of building an intellectual culture, critical society with that kind of agenda? Protect the "majority" race (THE ELITES in power or the UMNOputras) and "islam" (UMNO islam anyway) and country (and remain as UMNO mouthpiece)at the same time? What happens IF the interest of "the race" or UMNO ran contrary to the interest of the society and country? WHICH COMES FIRST?

Actually, that load of gibberish is a very sly cover asking for more self censorship by UM or more precisely, asking Utusan Merapu to be even more Merapu (in their attack), done in the name of protecting "the majority race" seeing it is emphasized as being the first item on the agenda! Race before country and Islam? No shocker if the objective of building an intellectual culture, critical society is an impossibility (because it is not the actual aim in the first place)!

Therefore I read nothing substantial or even meaningful from what 'diarrhea'ly exited Najib's mouth aka views, speech or promise (sorry about using that word,Sis. Hope you are fully recovered and 100% fit).

GOD bless Malaysia and us all.

    Nick.

Anonymous With one stroke of a pen by the Finance Minister allowing football betting, tycoon Vincent Tan is RM525 million richer. His Ascot Sports sold 70 per cent of the business to his corporate vehicle, Berjaya Group. If that’s not gargantuan largesse, I don’t know what is.

Anonymous Pardon me for saying you are a little naive to ever believe in Najib.....His true colours were shown too many times; first as MB of Pahang then in the Youth, followed by his 'cautious' approach during the S46 era then the Anwar saga. Sincerity is not his strong point but acting is! As Defence Minister and DPM, he had proved to be one with many faces. It has been said that his late father played out the late Tunku Abdul Rahman but he is worse than his father; he played out even more people than you can imagine. Maybe you are not aware of the many so-called committees to upgrade the BM but look at BM today; spelling problems, structure variation, etc. What committees!!! You will agree that Bumis like meetings and keeping files! Gone are days when Malay Mail ranked like the Straits Echo and Straits Times of the past. Today, you need a pinch of salt to take in materials from the media. stay healthy and regards. bengaun

Part of a strategically planned PR strategy to regain public favor perhaps?

    Unknown Dear Nick

I hear you loud and clear which is why I listed all those suggestions. If indeed the call is sincere, he should and must go beyond this fanfare and give the whole trimmings. Well, we have to wait and see what transpires from here...

Thanks so much for the solidly and steadily bull-dozing the argument to ground zero! Brilliant job, dear Nick!!!

    Unknown Dear Anon @ 4.12pm

Very true. Also, how can we have a critical thinking society when standards in education are going anti-gravitationally and there is the slow murder of the thinking mind among youth today thanks to the current system?

Many are well aware of the connections to that one...Sighs..

  1. says:

    Unknown Dear Beng Aun

Thank you for your honesty and openness to air your views.

Actually, I am not that naive to believe him :-) but I am using the Rogerian Appeal in my argument of this post.

The main thrust of my post is in the last part of the post which reads:

Could this be the beginning of the realization of a dream or is it only window-dressing after the Sibu by-election?

If I were to openly attack right from the start, it would:

    a) turn away fence-sitters who would say I am being unfair in not acknowledging his goodness in this overture.

Rogerian persuasion, sometimes called the "non-antagonistic" or non-oppositional" method, is a rhetorical strategy that seeks not to highlight differences but to find common ground.

So my starting point in applauding his move is the common ground with fence sitters or BN supporters.

b)Once I have gained the trust of the reader in the first few lines, they are more ready to read on.

This rhetorical strategy is that the writer’s empathy and fair-minded tone will lower the other party’s resistance to new thinking.

Aha - then I slowly introduced the suggestions I highlighted in my post.

In such a climate, the reader could or might be persuaded.

Even if he is not, I have already highlighted and expanded other aspects of the topic to show that there is definitely MORE than meets the eye/the superficial statement made, thereby underlining my call that the PM MUST do more beyond that call.

And then, I ended with the main premise of my post which is:

Could this be the beginning of the realization of a dream or is it only window-dressing after the Sibu by-election to win public favor?

I definitely read in between the lines :-) and appreciate honest comments from sincere readers like you, Beng Aun.

I hope you understand my strategy and writing style, especially in such cases when I use the Rogerian Appeal.

I have long wanted to write about this but did not want to expose my recipe but you are the second person to mention it this year so I guess it is about time I explain why I use this thrust.

I certainly hope I have not lost you as a reader. I will continue to speak for the rakyat and highlight sopo issues. Your input is always welcome and I appreciate your long and faithful readership, from late 2008 if I remember correctly.

I am thankful for your honesty and am not the least offended. Please continue to share your thoughts and views which I respect sincerely.

Take care and God bless you. Do keep in touch.

    Shalom

    Darth Vader MWS,

Najib is doing so to appease the Malaysian chinese. He got his advice from his so called "Advisor"

I dont believe him at all. He is a great actor even Robin Williams will have to call him sifu.

If he is really sincere, this "favorite" paper will have to be punished severely. Editor, Journalist will have to charged for Sedition. Secondly, his deputy would have to be dismissed for claiming malay 1st.

All changes must come from the heart. Not just paying lip service.

Until the day he advocate changes from the heart, his 1Malaysia propaganda should be change to "MALAYSIA1"

  1. says:

    Unknown Dear ~wits0~

Sighs. Actually, you are right. It can only happen if there is a major change across the nation. :-( And we can continue to hope, dream and work towards that...

Take care and have a nice day!

    Unknown Dear Darth Vader

The words a man says may not reflect what is in his heart or his mind. May there be leaders and politicians with godly conscience that speak fearlessly from their hearts and minds! Then perhaps change will mushroom easily....

Always lovely to hear from you, Darth Vader. Take care and God bless you and yours with a wonderful weekend!

    Warmest wishes
