The move was to avoid negative public perception of the prosecution team in the wake of a blogger's allegation that she is romantically involved with lead witness Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, who revealed this at a press conference at his office here today, said it was not because she had done anything wrong, but to protect the credibility of the prosecution team and to avoid disrupting the trial.
He said the decision to remove her from the team was done by the team late last week and the removal from the division was made on yesterday.
"Irrespective of whether that allegation is true or not, the fact remains that the team took it very seriously even in my absence. When I was on holiday, the team decided on their own to drop her from the team; that was late last week.
Both Malaysiakini and The Malaysian Insider named the blogger as RPK whose article The Bizarre Case of Sodomy 2 appeared in Malaysia Today HERE on July 22nd.
Defence counsel Sankara Nair told Malaysiakini that it was still incumbent upon the AG's Chambers to reply to the defence team's letter which sought a confirmation or denial over Raja Petra's allegation He said, "If there is truth in the allegation, then there will be serious implication on the integrity of the AG's Chambers."
Both parties have not made any comments on the allegations.
On August 16th 2008, The Star reported HERE that Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan swore on the Quran before scores of press members and religious officials at the Federal Territory mosque that he was sodomised by his former boss Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Why isn't he swearing that the allegation is not true? Why the silence?
More importantly, how does this development affect the case? Defence Counsel Sankara Nair brought up a very good point HERE when he said:
"This guy is a witness and cannot have access to the prosecutor's information. He has to be treated as any other witness because this is not Saiful versus Anwar.
"It is a case brought by the state against Anwar and Saiful is a witness.
"As such, Saiful Bukhari cannot be given an unfair advantage of having access to the prosecutor's questions and planning ahead his answers."
Until they make a statement or until there is a thorough investigation, we will never know the truth.
