The Man who Dared to Fail

As we all know, Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was an American inventor, scientist, and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. Dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park" (now Edison, New Jersey) by a newspaper reporter, he was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production and large teamwork to the process of invention, and therefore is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory. Edison's Menlo Park laboratory complex is said to live on in California's "invention factory" at Silicon Valley(from Wikipedia).

This evening, I came across Thomas Edison's Home Page set up and maintained by Mr. Gerry Beals AT THIS LINK. I was truly amazed both by the inspiring life of Thomas Edison and also by Mr. Gerry Beals' fantastic work at that site. A very detailed and beautifully written biography of Edison is available at Mr. Beals' site OVER HERE.

Reading it and also other links available in the net, has certainly been most inspiring for me.

1. Edison suffered under an impatient and overworked teacher.
2. His mother never gave up on him and withdrew him from school to home-school him! I wonder what would have happened if Edison had lived in the 21st century!
3. Edison had an unusually high-pitched voice which never deterred him from wanting a brief ambition to be an actor.
4. Thomas Edison was also a very literate man and read widely. He loved poetry and his favorite was Thomas Gray's Elegy In A Country Churchyard.
5. He had poor hearing and never let that handicap come in his way to accomplish his aims and dreams. He lost 80% of his hearing in his right ear and was totally deaf in the left ear after an accident.
6. He started his first business when he was 12!!
7. He learnt the Morse Code at the age of 15!
8. Throughout his life, he demonstrated a remarkable perseverance that gave him the strength and courage to face failure.
9. I never knew that he invented so many gadgets - far too many to list or explain so please go to Mr. Gerry Beals' page HERE and also Wikipedia HERE.

Here's a list of quotations by Thomas Edison to inspire you not to give up. His thoughts, and sayings are ones that are encouraging. As you can see from his quotes below, he had a strong work ethic, and was determined not to give up. Throughout his life, he presevered and remained positive. Truly, Thomas A. Edison's persistence and determination is an inspiration to all of us! May youth today be inspired by his life and not take the easy out out but to develop their thinking skills and motivation.

Enjoy the words of wisdom in these inspirational quotes by the famous Thomas Edison:.

I never did anything worth doing by accident, nor did any of my inventions come by accident; they came by work.

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.

There is always a better way.

We don't know a millionth of one percent about anything.

Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show you a failure.

There is no substitute for hard work.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

The first requisite for success is the ability to apply your physical and mental energies to one problem incessantly without growing weary.

Genius is one per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration.

The three great essentials to achieve anything worth while are,
first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense.

To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.

Anything that won't sell, I don't want to invent. Its sale is proof of utility, and utility is success.

As a cure for worrying, work is better than whiskey.

I have friends in overalls whose friendship I would not swap for the favor of the kings of the world.

We shall have no better conditions in the future if we are satisfied with all those which we have at present.

Take care and do leave a comment to share your thoughts. Thanks. Enjoy the rest of the evening and have a great weekend!

Jimmy Liew Maybe you will change your mind about this Edison, if you google "Nichola Tesla" and how Edison tried to destroy this man.
