ONLY FRIENDS?

My apologies to you, dear readers, for the delay in putting up this post. I had tea with a reader from KL and spent a lovely Sunday afternoon together together with her husband and my son. I have not finished the post I wrote halfway but hope to do so asap. Here's a post I am writing because of my reaction to one of my former student's update in Facebook. He put up this video and gave me a blast to my past. Readers who are baby boomers like me may remember this song and even if you don't, please give it a shot. You will not be disappointed! Take care and have a lovely evening! Swing by later for the next sopo post. Thanks!

It was only this evening that I learnt the name of the singer of one of my favorite songs that I used to sing during my teenage-angst filled days and nights, fretting over the few guys whom I used to like. Gosh! I just can't believe I was such a clueless teenager then to sing this song repeatedly with absolutely no idea of the singer's identity.

Françoise Madeleine Hardy, born 17 January 1944) is a French singer, actress and astrologer. Hardy is an iconic figure in fashion, music and style. Her song Only Friends (ton meilleur ami) comforted me for many days and nights in the 1970's!!! You can read more about her HERE.

It is very normal for a teenager or a young adult for that matter to wonder if a guy likes her or not. When counselling my former students, I used to smile when they recounted every single thing their date did, the sms messages, emails, dates, conversations etc. They would replay these to me in such a picture perfect manner and I could almost see everything happening before my eyes. I could identify with them and gave them very good advice - and why? I had walked down that road before!

Basically, I do not fall in love easily and was totally unaware when a guy was interested in me until a friend told me so. However, if I liked one guy then - aha! I would be so totally consumed with thoughts, hopes and dreams of that guy. No wonder the first song I learnt how to play on the guitar was The Everly Brothers' "All I have to do is Dream.."

Well, for those of you who were once young, and smitten by love...even for those of you who are still young and in the throes of deep love, enjoy this lovely song and reminisce of the time when you first fell in love or thought you did...and how the question "Are we only friends or more?" became the tag line of your dreams and leisure...:-).

Dedicated to my husband and ahem old flames :-) wherever you may be...

Only Friends (ton meilleur ami)1964

If we are only friends
Why do you kiss me like you do?
If we are only friends
Why do you hold me all night through?
Do the words "I love you"
Never come to your mind
Don't you know I love you?
Or is love really blind?

And every time we dance
When there is starlight up above
I wonder if by chance
You will discover this is love
Could we be as happy
As we both seem to be?
Could we be so happy
For the whole world to see if we are only friends?

All evening in your arms you hold me
'Til suddenly it's time to part
I wonder why you always hold me
So close to your heart

If we are only friends
Why don't you dance with someone new
And when the party ends
Why do I always leave with you
There's a happy ending
But on you that depends
And until you tell me
I can only say
We're just very good friends
We are only good friends
We're still very good friends.

ONLY FRIENDS

Have a lovely evening and do leave a comment to share your experiences...:-). Thanks!

POLITICAL RISKS

Posted by Unknown On 7 comments

It has been such a lovely Sunday and I am catching up on my reading. I just came across a very interesting article published about a month ago by Reuters HERE (compiled by Andrew Marshall and Kuala Lumpur bureau) about five political risks to watch in Malaysia.

Risk # 1 POLITICAL CONFLICT

Key issues to watch:
a) Anwar's Sodomy trial
b) Leadership struggle in MCA

Risk # 2 ECONOMIC REFORM

Whilst the government has promised further economic reform to attract increased foreign investment, the PM has rolled back elements of a four-decades old Malay affirmative policy, relaxing the rule that companies must offer stakes to indigenous ethnic Malays.

The Reuters report said: "Despite the moves, Najib is wary of upsetting the Malays, a critical vote bank, and treads carefully on economic reform. This may cause him to dilute or abandon his plans as he attempts to remain in power."

Key issues to watch:

Government policy implementation and announcements. Reuters argued that a further set of liberalisation has been trailed by the government, although while investors have greeted positively measures so far, little money has flowed into Malaysia's markets as they are wary over implementation.

Risk # 3 RACE AND RELIGION

Key issues to watch: If the government tries to woo Muslim voters with more conservative policies based on Islam, investors may be spooked.

Risk # 4 CORRUPTION

Reuters reported HERE:

Malaysia used to be regarded as one of the region's more reliable countries but worsening corruption and a perceived lack of judicial independence have damaged investment. UMNO's policy of handing out government contracts to what critics say
are cronies under a long-entrenched system of patronage within the party has hit Malaysia's competitiveness.

Key issues to watch:

How Najib handles the dilemma of bolstering his core support bloc while also cracking down on corruption. Investors are watching to see whether promised reform materialises.

Indicators gauging corruption in Malaysia. Transparency International's 2009 Corruption Perceptions Index, released last month, saw a significant deterioration in Malaysia's ranking to 56th out of 180 countries from 47th the previous year.

RISK # 5 SECURITY

Two issues were reported:
a) The insurgency in southern Thailand has implications for Malaysia, particularly if it starts to draw more attention and sympathy from Malaysians for the ethnic Malay fighters across
the border.
b)A less likely danger is that al Qaeda-linked groups managed to establish a foothold in the area.

COULD THIS HAPPEN TO YOU?

Two medical students were walking along the street when they saw an old man walking with his legs spread apart. One of the students said, "I'm sure he has Petry Syndrome. Those people walk just like that."

The other student says, "No, I don't think so. The old man surely has Zovitzki Syndrome. He walks just as we learned in class."

Since they couldn't agree they decided to ask the old man. They approached him and one of the students said to him, "We're medical students and couldn't help but notice the way you walk, but we couldn't agree on the syndrome you might have. Could you tell us what it is?"

The old man said, "I'll tell you, but first you'll tell me what you think."

One of the students said, "I think it's Petry Syndrome."

The old man said, "You thought.......... but you are wrong."

Then the other student said, "I think you have Zovitzki Syndrome."

The old man said, "You thought.......... but you are wrong.

So they asked him, "Well, what do you have?"

The old man said: "I thought it was GAS........... but I was wrong."

A group of 40 years old buddies discuss and discuss where they should meet for dinner. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at the Gausthof zum Lowen restaurant because the waitress's there have low cut blouses and nice breasts.

Ten years later, at 50 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss and discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at the Gausthof zum Lowen because the food there is very good and the wine selection is good also.

Ten years later at 60 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss and discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at the Gausthof zum Lowen because they can eat there in peace and quiet and the restaurant is smoke free.

Ten years later, at 70 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss and discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at the Gausthof zum Lowen because the restaurant is wheel chair accessible and they even have an elevator.

Ten years later, at 80 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss and discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at the Gausthof zum Lowen because that would be a great idea because they have never been there before.

The phone rings and the lady of the house answers, "Hello, Mrs. Ward, please."

"Speaking."

"Mrs. Ward, this is Doctor Jones at the Medical Testing Laboratory. When your doctor sent your husband's biopsy to the lab yesterday, a biopsy from another Mr. Ward arrived as well, and we are now uncertain which one is your husband's. Frankly, the results are either bad or terrible."

"What do you mean?" Mrs. Ward asks nervously.

"Well, one of the specimens tested positive for Alzheimer’s and the other one tested positive for AIDS. We can't tell which is your husband's."

"That's dreadful! Can't you do the test again?" questioned Mrs. Ward.

"Normally we can, but Medicare will only pay for these expensive tests one time."

"Well, what am I supposed to do now?"

"The people at Medicare recommend that you drop your husband off somewhere in the middle of town. If he finds his way home, don't sleep with him.

Woman's Ears !
A man lost both ears in an accident. No plastic surgeon could offer him a solution. He heard of a very good one in Sweden, and went to him.

The new surgeon examined him, thought a while, and said, "Yes, I can put you right."

After the operation, bandages off, stitches out, he goes to his hotel.

The morning after, in a rage, he calls his surgeon, and yells, "You bastard, you gave me a woman's ears."

"Well, an ear is an ear, it makes no difference whether it is a man's or a woman's."

"You're wrong, I hear everything, but I don't understand a thing!"

Best Kept Secret
At a dinner party, several of the guests were arguing whether men or women were more trustworthy.

"No woman," said one man, scornfully, "can keep a secret."

"I don't know about that," huffily answered a woman guest. "I have kept my age a secret since I was twenty-one."

"You'll let it out some day," the man insisted.

"I hardly think so!" responded the lady. "When a woman has kept a secret for twenty-seven years, she can keep it forever."

Best Buddies
Nancy announced that she was going to start a diet to lose some pounds she had put on recently.

"Great," Rita exclaimed. "I'm ready to start a diet too. We can be dieting buddies and help each other out. And when I feel the urge to drive out and get a burger and fries, I'll call you first."

"Wonderful," Nancy replied. "I'll go with you."

In a recovery room a man was just waking up from anesthesia after surgery. His wife was sitting by his side holding his hand. His eyelids just opened for a few seconds.

He looked at his wife as if he was returning from out of body experience, hallowed by bright white light. With a broken smile and in a groggy voice he mumbled at his wife, "You are so beautiful."

Then he fell asleep and started snoring again waking up other recovering room surgery patients and annoying nurses. His wife had never seen him so ugly and yet so romantic. So she suppressed all her disgust of environment, held his hand tighter and chose to stuck there for a while.

After a while the man opens his eyelids again but wider and for longer time. He loves the comfort of his wife and says, "You are cute!"

The wife was disgusted, threw his hand on the bed and demanded an explanation, "It was 'beautiful', last time and how it is 'cute' this time. What happened to my beauty?"

The man answered, "Honey, I am recovering to reality from the influence of Anesthesia." :-)
