The Graduate

It has been a long journey. :-) My son graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Hons) in Contemporary Music last Sunday. The joy and pride I felt within my heart when he walked up to the stage and received his scroll is indescribable. Indeed, all of us are very proud of him and his achievements. :-) *beaming with joy*

I only wish my father had been there to see his grandson graduate.

To be honest, I am ashamed and sad of the way I pushed him from the time he was in pre-school till Form 1. It is not easy to be a mother and a teacher for the tendency to bring the classroom home lurks around the corner. When I had my spinal injury in 2002, I could not be a helicopter mom to him any more and he slowly slipped away from my 'grip'. He was a straight A student till Form 4 when teenage angst reared its ugly head. By the grace of God, he did fairly well in his SPM and went on to take his South Australian Matriculation course and went on to study music at UCSI University where he became independent and slowly found his niche.

Thankfully, he and I have a beautiful relationship. Having learnt from my mistakes in parenting, I believe I am doing a better job bringing up my second boy. :-) After all, bringing up kids is like making pancakes - mess up with the first one and subsequent ones get better! :-)

Today, he teaches music at an international school, gigs at hotels thrice a week and teaches at a music school on Sundays.

I am really proud to see how he is so driven as compared to the time he was in Form 4. He will be setting up his own company with another musician and hopefully, make waves not only in the local music scene but also regionally and internationally one day.

I am sad that he works so hard. :-( It breaks my heart to see how he has become so skinny as he hardly has time to rest or even sleep. How I wish he had ended up as a lawyer, engineer or accountant but am glad he is chasing his own dreams and doing what he is best at.

If any of you has any performance opportunities for his trio and another band which he belongs to, please let me know. I can be contacted at writetomws@hush.ai

Sorry for this short post. I am off to see my bridesmaid for a while and then to the gym and then will be visiting a blog reader whose wife recently had a coronary bypass surgery.

Take care and have a great day!

P.S. Oh dear!!! I forgot that I had posted Are we all slightly MAD? an hour ago and really thought I had not posted anything yet. Sighs...Forgetful me strikes again.
