One day the girl left the door to the cage open. The larger and stronger of the two birds flew from the cage. The girl watched anxiously as he circled high above her. She was so frightened that he would fly away and she would never see him again that as he flew close, she grasped at him wildly. She caught him in her fist. She clutched him tightly within her hand. Her heart gladened at her sucess in capturing him. Suddenly she felt the bird go limp. She opened her hand stared in horror at the dead bird. Her desperate clutching love had killed him.
She noticed the other bird teteering on the edge of the cage. She could feel his great need for freedom. His need to soar into the clear, blue sky. She lifted him from the cage and tossed him softly into the air. The bird circled once, twice, three times.
The girl watched delighted at the bird's enjoyment. Her heart was no longer concerned with her loss. She wanted the bird to be happy. Suddenly the bird flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder. It sang the sweetest melody, she had ever heard.

Anonymous As a young boy (in the 60's) I would leave an empty tin (milk powder tin of mid-size)on rubber tree and very soon the "Magpie Robin" will come a calling to lay eggs.
Soon the eggs will be hatched and when the little ones were big enough (just before having the strength to fly off) I will take it home. Feed it with worms and other food.
They will soon grow up and sing beautifully. Without fail, I will let them out of the cage and will fly around the house but as always will return to the cage. They are so lovely and will respond to my snapping of fingers and voice.
As they grow to be "young adult" they will follow me on my shoulder on weekend and the pork seller will slice a few pieces of thin meat just for them. This became a weekly routine.
Well, on most of the schooling days, these tame ones were INFLUENCED by the wild, free flying cousins from elsewhere. One day as I returned from school, I saw the cages empty and upon whistling and snapping of fingers, one finally came back but seated high on my nangka tree.
I climbed up high and try cajoling with meat on one hand. Before I could reach him at a height of about over 25 feets, I heard the branch that I was stepping on creaking and in no time even the branch that I was helding on gave way.
Thank God for preserving me then as I was still a "non-member" as yet and the only pain felt was the buttock was a bit sore. I guess the poor bird saw the drama and flew as far away as possible fearing the repercussion. Maybe ends up as a BBQ piece, hahaha.
Anyway, from that day, I switches to ornamental fishes instead of caging the freedom of birds. It was a good lesson learned and parents knew not the adventure of that day or else will wack the buttock and make it even more sore.
What an eventful days of old unlike the kids of today wher virtual game and video/movie entice them. Not the freedom of life and expression out in the woods with real life birds of every kind. Cheers !

Unknown Dear ahoo
WOW!! That is awesome sharing!! Thank you so much for such a refreshing and inspiring comment. Yea, I wish kids today would look less to electronic gadgets and more to Mother Nature to appreciate all that she has given us.
Take care and have a blessed evening!

If you love someone, set him free
If he comes back to you, he's yours to keep
If he doesn't, it was never meant to be.
