Another Joke from Syed Hamid

This morning, when I was enjoying my usual cup of white coffee while reading the news from various online portals, my husband suddenly burst into laughter. He drew my attention to THIS ARTICLE in The Sun on "I Know What Public Transport is Like" . Excerpt from that report:

What does someone who is chauffeured around in a luxury car know about the woes of the average commuter?

This question was posed to Land Public Transport Commission (LPTC) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar today, who replied: "I use public transport once in a while."

Syed Hamid was quizzed by this reporter on the observation that many of those overseeing public transport were unaware of the realities of public transport as they themselves relied on chauffeur-driven transport.

"If you build schools, it doesn't mean you go to the school you built. But it is important for us to try the service so that we have a better feel of it. When we get back, we get the feedback from people and we know the wishes of the people," he said after launching the KLIA Express VIP Service at KL Sentral here.

However, Syed Hamid insists he is getting enough of the feel of the average commuter who faces delayed and crammed trains and buses, overcharging cabbies and lack of connectivity.

"I use public transport once in a while ... taxis and others. This is the reason why we need to improve public transport. From my place, there is no connectivity. The interconnectedness of public transport must be improved. It must be more efficient," said Syed Hamid, who had spoken earlier of his experiences travelling by train from Kuala Lumpur to Johor.

Asked when he took the trip he spoke of, Syed Hamid said he took it "30 years ago".

Fantastic. Isn't it wonderful that someone who took public transport THIRTY YEARS AGO is now the Chairman of Land Public Transport Commission (LPTC)?

God bless Tan Sri for his HONESTY!!!

So what will happen to our public transport system? This is what he said in the report:

1. We are taking action in preparing towards the coming into force all the ancillary acts that will allow us to play a regulatory role and absorb government units. At present, LPTC's powers come from the Public Land Transport Commission Act.

2. We cannot enforce certain things such as investigations and giving operators certain licences, but, we are working very closely with the relevant departments such as the Railways Department and the licencing boards.

3. On the proposed Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, which carries an estimated RM40 billion price tag, he said this is an indicative cost and that the bulk of the infrastructure costs have to be borne by the government.

"So the government has to think of its own financing. When you talk about the ERL, you are talking about private companies. Even Prasarana is a company incorporated under the Companies Act, they have their own budget and their own financing," he said.

"It is different with the MRT as the government has to get the funding approved. There are various mechanisms to reduce cost. When the whole plan is out and when the public knows exactly where we are going to get the money, it will be easier to discuss."

Whatever the case, the government has a moral responsibility to ensure a good public transportation system for ALL. Perhaps Ministers, elected representatives and officers of NGOs related to this area should take public transport MORE often rather than once in a few decades!

Perhaps then, they can empathize with what people have to tolerate under such circumstances.

Anonymous That shows how badly out of touch Malaysian leaders are with the reality of the daily suffering of the men in the streets.
The last time he travelled on the train was 30 years ago (from JB to KL).....that NUT should realised that he is the least qualified person to make any comment let alone lead an organization (LPTC)to take care of the nation's land tranport needs.
A nation of "NUTs". He got the cheek to make reference to schools too when the nation educational system has been producing unemployable or illiterate graduates. Pak Hamid....Anda memang se orang yang sangat "pintar" ......Hebat sekali Datuk !!!

Anonymous Everybody, please take it easy. Don't go bursting your blood vessels over all the 'wisdom' coming from the obviously not so wise politicians. We know their standards, so why get upset. If you were to take these guys seriously, you ask for the consequences yourself. The purportedly most clever of the lot, the PM who led us for over 2 decades, who till now, is still dishing out "advice, wisdom' in his usual snarling way, has only just recently proclaimed, rather proudly I thought, that receiving handicaps is nothing to be ashamed of. Actually, admitted that his own admission to medical training was also under similar situation, i.e. on preferred allocation basis. Wow, wouldn't that have taken the special privilege situation at least 25 years before NEP? And according to him, it was to actually level the playground. But I had digressed. So, if the country's most honoured folk hero, since Hang Tuah whose ethnicity is questionable is no more, is of such caliber, hey, we should be magnanimous and forgiving. Or at least take all that happened, is happening, will be happening in their strides, with very strong sense of humour, laugh out, go on with our lives, and not be upset till we vomit blood. My late parents wisely, real wisdom here, told me from young, the best way to avoid being discriminated upon is to make sure your opponents can't do that!! So let Syed Hamid rubbishes the public transport system, just make sure you drive Mercedes and BMWs. Or better, let an Ahmad drives you around in them!!!

Anonymous I stay in Sibu, Sarawak. The bus service commuting the Jalan Awang Ramli Amit route only operates every 1 hour so the public has to depend on pirated taxis (kereta sapu) to commute to/fro town. Billions are taken to build highways in West Malaysia and what is Sabah/Sarawak getting? Even Bakun is drying up our mighty river. Minister Hamid & all the stupid ministers are just wasting their time attending UMNO assembly. Tak ada kerja kah kat opis!!!!

Anonymous The kind of talent that hems such high profile position is already a joke-howbeit a bad one. The joke is really on us, we continue to cry but the joker is the one laughing as our expense. How long more?

  1. says:

Anonymous You know, don't just whack them for not using public transport. Ever get stuck in a jam for one hour, only to suddenly hear sirens blaring, and a traffic police waves you to the side so that a VIP can pass?

They don't even know what's it like to be stuck in a traffic jam, much less public transport.

Oh yeah, by the way, does anyone suspect that Malaysian highways are designed to create congestion instead of disperse congestion just for the sole purpose of collecting additional revenue?

Anonymous I see nothing between his ears. Unfortunately he and the other brain dead are making decisions affecting millions. Sigh!!!!!!
