Drop In Ranking? Expected!!

Reporters Without Borders released their Press Freedom Index 2010 HERE which revealed that Malaysia has plunged 10 notches to 141 - notably the lowest in nine years. This means that Malaysia is in the bottom quarter of 178 countries in the list.

Believe it or not - last year, the ranking for Malaysia improved from 132 to 131 so this development does not give a positive picture of press freedom in our country.

CLICK HERE to see the rankings for ASEAN countries.

So what caused this dramatic slide? Obviously, it could probably be a combination of a few events including:

  • Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission's investigation into Malaysiakini's cow-head video
  • the arrests of a few bloggers
  • the ban on a number of books by cartoonist Zunar
  • the action taken wrt Kim Quek and his book "The March to Putrajaya"
  • recent news that social networking sites will be monitored
  • the recent sacking of media personnel in a tv station and a radio station
  • and many other reasons
I am sure the ranking would have been lower if they had taken into consideration the following incident reported HERE by The Malaysian Insider which said:

A number of reporters from news portals were booted from the media room of the Umno general assembly today for not possessing press passes issued by the party’s secretariat.

“Unfortunately, Umno that is led by Datuk Seri Najib Razak does not hold on to the principles that they espouse and this has been proven by their actions of kicking the Malaysiakini reporters out of the media room of the Umno general assembly,” NUJ Malaysia president Hata Wahari said in a statement today.

“Umno’s action shows its attitude of not being media-friendly which is not in line with the speech made by Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak – who said that the media plays an important role in destroying extremism globally – during the closing of the international forum on The Creation of Global Citizen: Media Liberalisation And the New Political Realities yesterday,” he added.

Obviously, when things are in a muddled mess, the muzzle is clamped on those who have privy to soap boxes. Such moves can be seen as measures to stifle press freedom and as furtive attempts to force the media's hand to comply with their requirements and standards.

Ideally, in any country that supposedly practises democracy, there should be freedom of expression and freedom of the press. Democracy in the mass media should empower the press to practise mature journalistic principles to produce reports that inform citizens about current events!!

The public are the customers of the mainstream media so the latter should be accountable to the public in creating the democratic expression of truth of the events as seen in the society. Is this the case in Malaysia?

Any news blackout in any democratic country indirectly shows the increased domination of that government over the mass media and the shrinking freedom of expression in that country. Some authorities may speak so much about reforming the mass media, establishing certain organizations and strengthening public service broadcasting. However if and when they do just the opposite, then the ones to suffer are the masses.

Theoretically, when the media dances to the tune of the authorities, media content would be SHARPLY INFLUENCED because the range of news and opinions would be limited, distorted and bias reporting would be more likely to occur.

Does the drop in ranking imply that the MSM staff could be in a state of cognitive dissonance - torn between factual reporting and conforming to demands of the authorities?

In time to come, would they be robbed not only of their ‘voice’ but also their ‘conscience’ when they cower to the demands and observe boundaries set by the authorities? Then they can all sail happily with the ruling government - in the boat populated by passengers with NO CONSCIENCE!

If there is little press freedom, how can there be equal distribution of information? How can citizens grow up to be rational thinking people when we are ROBBED in broad daylight of the freedom to think and/or the freedom of expression?

In the long-run, citizens of such a country would be ZOMBIES who cannot discern what is right and wrong, zombies who would have NO IDEA whatsoever of their rights and what they should do!!! They would, instead, be living in the DARK AGES as political discourses would be as extinct as dinosaurs and dodo birds!!!

If democratic principles are being compromised and freedom of the press is being MURDERED, where does it lead us?

I would not at all be surprised to see a further drop in the ranking for 2011.

In the mean time, I hope that there will be more genuine journalists and truly independent news organizations in our country who live up to the principles of journalism. You all have to be the brave ones who live to fight for truth, justice and integrity.

To those in the media industry and the NUJ who relentlessly risk their lives and work with such dedication to expose truth and enhance accountability, God bless you! Keep up the good work.

HotDogg Which of the following accurately describes the Press Freedom Index? Is it:

    A) The unpublished story of Kunta Kinte

    B) The art of using your index finger when doing press-ups

    C) The point where the husband no longer press for more freedom to go out

    D) A guide which means that our newspapers are not worth reading anymore

Wait a minute…I’m so sorry folks, I forgot I’m not allowed to write this, so kindly delete from your brain what you have just read. :-)

Anonymous Press for freedom and no freedom after being suppressed. Everything is 1 nowadays and no wonder the showing of middle finger is more often a welcome sign these days.

Not surprise at all with so low ranking as the political masters want only their news their ways or no way. The only way out is pit bottom before new dawn can be achieved. Sad but the choice is clear that we must vote wisely.

Anonymous Actually, a drop, the lower the better in the ranking, is in fact a good sign. Let me put it this way. If Malaysia's domestic and international affairs are well received by the locals as well as foreigners, Pakatan is F.U.C.K.E.D. Let's imagine this scenario:

FDIs are overflowing and people are queuing up to invest in Malaysia. Singapore and the rest of Asean trails at a distant second.

Mahathir is dead and so is Ibrahim Ali. Perkasa loses all will to live and disbands.

Race based political parties, the mother of all racial hatred and disunity are out-lawed.

Najib and Moo suddenly became changed men and decided that corruption and croynism is killing the country and tells MACC to go "all out without fear" to nab and nail offenders.

Unqualified students no longer get into universities because they have decided that meritocracy is the only way forward.

BTN is scrapped and all officers sent to jail as traitors

    The ISA is abolished

The NEM is replaced with a new 8-points initiative code-named S.C.R.E.W. Y.O.U. that promotes nation building. It stands for:

    Social justice
    Civil liberty
    Racial harmony
    Equal opportunity
    Wealth creation
    Young talents
    Open Society
    Unity in Diversity

Can you imagine that? Then we'll no longer have to vote for Pakatan. That's not good. BN MUST continue to bring down the country and our competitive rankings MUST continue to drop, otherwise Anwar Ibrahim and family will have to sell nasi lemak in Bukit Bintang and Lim Kit Siang and family will have to sell char kui tiau in Jalan Alor.

Najis and Moo MUST continue digging their own graves. The moment they realize their mistakes, Pakatan is DEAD. See?
